Spent another saturday with Shelby

She got to meet her grandparents today and made a excellent impression. I also got a very nice comment from a woman that has owned grays for 20 years on how nicley tempermented Shebly is

And how she seems to have great potential to stay so sweet.

She is now spending some time in her cage or the aviary.

She also picked out a new toy She seems to love things with knots in them and we put a hoop swing in her cage I put her in and she jumped right on it and played on it for a LONG time just climbing all over it and spining around. She seemed to really like it.

I spent about 5 hours with her put her back in her cage a few times and walked away and talked to other folks. She does not like to be put in the cage but is fine once she is in. but she was tired and getting a little cranky.

I had lots of compliments even had some help in picking out some crunchy paper distructable toys!

She even shoplifted one (god i love this bird)...................

went to play with her again ! and she has learned some new things now she will step up

and is using her foot to hold things. and she even FLEW!!!! they took three feathers off to

slow her down a little. but she was all over the place playing and making cooing noises

giving kisses ect........

I would say somthing like pretty bird or call her name and she would puff right up

I was holding her and i would say 90% of the time she was puffed up and looking all around

just in a very playful mood today. was totaly awsome.

She as no issue with me feeding her a peanut and being puffed and standing on 1 leg.

More time with Shelby Today about 4 hours...

I was impressed she wanted to get up on a perch and could not ... however there were some towls folded up next to the perch

yup she figured out if she got up on the towls she could hop to the perch...She is also still VERY vocal with her coo-ing you can just tell

she gets so excited about some things. Some one noticed today she was making a G sound. I am constantly prasing her telling her Good Girl.

she is only 11 weeks is this the beginings of forming words.. am i crazy or is she picking up my praises. Also today when i walked in

she was in the aveary and when i said hello to her she stated cooing and got all exicited going all kinda crazy......

She also seems to want to be on me when i am there She is doing very well with the step up command and doing very well learning

to play with toys.

Shelby is just too adorable! :-)

Great pictures!!

I noticed in few pictures that Shelby was offered peanuts! I strongly advise against that. Here is just one quote/a word of caution, but there is lot more about peanuts on this forum if you are interested.

To quote Dave from another thread:

"What you SHOULD get rid of is all the unshelled peanuts in the bag. They're raw and the shells can carry bacteria and fungi on them.

The best unshelled peanuts to give a bird ( if you want to) is human grade roasted unshelled peanuts that are in supermarkets. They're not raw and don't carry bacteria and fungi. They're consumed by people."

Didn't I say that from the start?! Well, now you are confusing me to!

The peanuts with the shells are no good unless they are human grade and roasted that are in supermarkets. They're not raw and don't carry bacteria and fungi.

You gave shelby the one with the shell, right?

yes that had a shell it was from the bird store so i am sure they are up to what ever grade they need to be

this place has been in business for over 20 years and the owner has about 8 grays including a few that live in the

store.

They are very reputable and I know alot of owners will not buy food from any other pet store.

I am new at this so bear with me... :) But I really trust the folks at the store. the owners

8 grays are mostly resque and have special needs they both really LOVE all the birds they raise

and sell.

They do not just sell birds either they educate and spend alot of time with new owners 1 to 1

and discuss what to expect and tell you to go home and think about it before they will even take a

deposite. once that is done ususaly the bird is weaning so they HIGHLY encourage new owners to

come to the store and get aclimated to there new birds.

They have a play area set up for owners to play with the new birds and start learning to train

and be trained... So far i have spent about 20 hours with Shelby and will most likly spend another

40 with her BEFORE she comes home. Right now she spends time in her cage so when she comes home

the cage and myself will not be strange. So i am really trying my best to do every thing right......

but mistakes might be part of learning.

I'm in no way implying that this store is not reputable and that they do not love their birds. It may just be the case that no of their birds ever caught something from a peanut, and there might just as easily be that no bird in that store will ever get ill, but that is beside the point. Shells of the peanuts are carriers of the fungi and bacteria and it is definitely NOT a good idea to offer them to your bird. Maybe owners of the store aren't aware of that, or they never had a bed experience before so they let their guard down a bit, and because of it don't warn people. I don't wanna speculate here any further.. I didn't know about that unshelled peanut problem either till I read it somewhere and then asked my avian vet and she confirmed, and now I see also other members saying the same. So, my only advice to you is: better safe than sorry.
