maximum time to leave birds

what is the longest you can/should/have left you birds? i need to make a trip but with train times and journey lengths etc i could be gone up 10 hours. my partner would need to come with me, my mum is working and my sisters are back at school so theres no one to bird sit. i think this is too long to leave brian but i have people telling me otherwise. i just wanted your opinion.

I think 10 hours is not too long to leave Brian if it is only one time, we all have had to leave for longer than normal once in a while and I don't think it will be a problem.

 

As long as you leave enough food and water he should be fine, and plenty of toys, maybe leave some new ones he hasn't had before or had for a while, to keep him occupied. I am normally gone for at least 9 hours during the week when I go to work and Josey is fine. But you are at home most of the time but I think as long as it does not happen very often then he should be ok with it.

i have left him a several times but never for more than 6 or 7 hours, so it wouldn't upset him if i was gone for a period again. i suppose with plenty of food and the TV on he would be ok. i guess it would upset me more than him :lol:

Besides, when you do get back he will be so glad to see you all will be forgiven, so don't worry about it, he will be fine and so will you.

I think he would be fine for 10 hrs. Even 24 hrs in an emergency with enough food and water would be OK, though clearly not desirable.

 

He will be happy to see you when you get back! But once in a blue moon this kind of thing should not hurt them at all. In fact, some would say its good for them to have some experiences like this since inevitably throughout their long lives things will come up out of the normal routine from time to time.

beccy , I'm sure many of us have had to leave our birds on occasions longer than we would like.I'm sure this is a one off & as long as it is not a regular occurance Brian will be fine.I know when i first left my birds i was more distressed than them, they just greeted me as normal when i returned.Dont worry to much he will be fine

A trip for 10 hours is completely fine. As another poster said 24 hours is fine as long as you know they're all taken care of with food/water, etc. Your birdie will be just fine!!

When I leave Hemingway for any long periods I roll his cage in front of the TV and put on cartoons for the day. I know the sounds and action keeps him happy, because I have video taped him many times to see what he is up to. It’s funny when an animal makes loud sounds, how he gets involved. Try it, and you will know your bird very well. 10 hours is not that bad but yell and scream with joy and give him his favorite snack as SOON as you get home. Plenty of snacks, HAND feed him. He won’t be mad at you.

I left Pryde for 24 hours. Granted we did have someone sleep here that night because of the dogs, but they didn't do anything with her besides watch movies in the room she is in. She didn't even seem to notice we were gone longer than usual.

I agree with everyone, Bri will be fine for 10 hours. Maybe you could leave a couple foraging toys in his cage that would help keep him extra busy. If he's spending time extricating an almond from it's "prison," the time will fly by for him .

thanks guys i feel much better. he will have plenty of toys and can always see the tv from his cage anyway. i may even take joes suggestion of taping him when i'm out and seeing what he gets up to.

Ha... we do the same thing! We have a webcam set up and can go on the internet on our cell phones or at work and watch him... I think you all are the only people who wouldn't think we are crazy for doing that!! :silly:

Think you are crazy for doing that, no way, it is a good way to keep an eye on him, you would probably be surprised at how many people do that sort of thing all the time, and it is easy with all the new technology out there today.

Wow I feel like a bad bird mom, but I've left my birds for 3 days before. Granted my mom came and checked on all of them and made sure they had plenty of food and water, but my mom is terrified of the Greys cause they're "so big". I believe I have a complex now LOL

loviechick there comes a point in all our lives where due to circumstances we have to leave our birds, you had your mom check on them & they were safe, so dont feel bad

Tracy is right, just because we haven't left ours for that long a period of time doesn't mean that the time may come that we do have to leave them for longer than we would want. You do what you have to and it will be fine as long as it does not happen very often.

Ha Makena, that sounds like a great idea. I work from home, but sometimes have to go out of the house for work or just to get away. How do you do the whole internet thing so you can see the bird. I don't so much worry about Tyler, but I start to miss her and it would be fun to see what she is up to while I am away.
