Streetwise Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Well today was the day. Lucy as been to the vets and had her x-rays. The result wasn't good. There is nothing the vet can do to fix her toe. The vets recommendation is to remove the toe. He was to see her again in a month, he would prefer her to be a little older before the operation. As anyone have any info on birds that have toes removed. Is there a lot of aftercare ?

I don't have any experience with bird toes, but I think removing the toe will be a much shorter surgical procedure (less time under anesthesia) and will be less painful and heal more quickly than trying to fix the toe would have been. I have no experience myself but what she said makes a lot of sense to me, I think she would recover lots faster with amputation than trying to fix the toe, keep us informed Chris.

Kevin Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I have had a canary lose a toe, then another and another until the whole foot fell off. He was left with a stump and it healed fairly well and he got a long just fine. I also adopted an owl finch that was missing most of his toes. He got around well and he even fathered several clutches of beautiful owl finches. So, I think Lucy will be fine and keeping it clean is the best advice anyone could give. I'm sure the vet knows what he/she is doing, so just enjoy your bundle of joy and know she'll be fine. Wish I could see her in person..... Who knows, maybe someday, eh? Your Pal.... Kevin
Streetwise Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 I've decided to push for the toe to be sorted sooner rather than later. This weekend the toe seems to have folder more under the others. I feel its making Lucy more of a cripple. I've been bit a few times this weekend hard, I'm am sure its because she feels unstable. I'm going to speak to the vet again tomorrow and get more info from him. I'm hoping with the toe out of the way she will walk better and grip perches better.

Streetwise Posted January 19, 2011 Author Posted January 19, 2011 We say goodbye to this toe next Wednesday. Its a hard decision because the toe still does have life in it. But its not in the right place and both me and the vet think it will be better of gone.

Kevin Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Hang in there. She will adjust wonderfully without the toe. It's amazing how animals adapt to change that we as humans would have trouble with. She is in capable hands and is loved dearly and that is really all that matters. Keep us posted and try to focus on how much better she'll get around and not on the surgery....Kev

Streetwise Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 It's the day tomorrow. Booked in a 8am I'm so worried about her. Is it the right thing will she pull through. Spoke to the vet again today. He's says 100% she will be much better with out it.
Streetwise Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 Right we are through hopfully the worsted bit. She as a large pot on to protected the stitches. It's not easy for her to get about on. All we have done since she came home is lay and cuddle. I'll post some new pics tommorow.

It will be on for ten days and then she will have to go to sleep again so the vet can saw it off. Yes she is leaving it alone at the min and its not causing her two much trouble. I think she is showing me thats she is a really special bird and thats why we came together bad toe or not.
