Guest Monique
I was just curious if anyone on here has an Eclectus? I think they are so pretty I love the way their heads look. When we lost our last grey I almost decided to get an Eclectus instead of a Grey ... not because we don't like the Greys but I missed mine so much I thought it would be too painful to have another one. Of course we did end up getting another Grey. But I was just curious if anyone here with Grey experience has an Eclectus too or has had one? Tari
I had one for about 6 months. She was scared to death of my husband. Everytime he walked by the cage she would throw herself to the bottom and flay about screaming. I handfed her and this never got better no matter what I did. They like quite slow moving people not fast moving loud husbands.

Guest Monique
How odd. I've never heard of a baby bird being handfed and not being okay with a normal environment. Maybe you're husband is a little "rowdier" but unless he was spinning in circles slam dancing with people to ultra loud punk rock music right by her on a regular unexpected basis ... well let's suffice it to say that is just weird! Tari
Oh no this is normal for that breed of bird. They are quite and don't move around much and they prefer a quite calm environment. There are exceptions and I hear the males are not as bad. They are not good with children as a rule either but mine feel in love with a 13 year old and until she died at age of four cause of a tumor she followed that child everywhere. If (not that they well) one of my pet birds passes away I may try again with a male. Cause the coolest thing about them is they don't have feather dust and their feathers look more like fur. That is what drew me too them in the first place.

Post edited by: Tari, at: 2007/08/19 22:
Guest Monique
I am of the firm belief that no birds are good with children (except maybe a parakeet or cockatiel) but there are some exceptional children that are good with birds. The males are supposed to make much better pets than the females.
dblhelix
I have recently read articles about Eclectus and some "misoconcieved stereo types" about them. Not having any personal experience myself, the articles indicated that Eclectus were often percieved as quiet reserved birds, easily spooked, shy, prone to feather picking, one person birds not good with children. However in reality they really are no more or less prone to these things than many other species, like the grey. Surely each bird is an individual that may be neurotic, but a lot has to do the environment they are surrounded by/brought up in that influences their sensitiviy to these things. Again, I have not owned one and am just forwarding on some info I recently read that happened to address some of these things about Eclectus. I agree in general children and birds must be carefully managed.
judygram
I don't know much about the eclectus, except that it is one bird you can tell the sex of without a DNA test. And they are beautiful birds, no doubting that.
