Need your opinion on branches

Hey guys. I was in a furniture store in Toronto and they had these huge branches as decorations for sale. They look like Java wood to me, but the staff didn't know what kind of wood they were. If they are bird safe, I'd be able to buy a big branch for a little over $100 thIMG_0182 (Medium).jpg

I'm no wood expert, but it definitely looks like java or grape to me.

The only thing about it is you have no idea where it came from, what chemicals it might have been exposed to, etc... I'd worry they may have used a treatment on it at whatever plant they make them that could be harmful to the fids.

Have you tried to find safe wood that is local from maybe a tree falling or etc? I just made a playgym from a tree that fell down during a windstorm and it turned out awesome!

Pictures: http://tinyurl.com/25o72jf and http://tinyurl.com/24vf8nn I cleaned them with diluted bleech and laid them in direct sunlight on each side for a day.

I'm nervous about wild-found wood around here becase we're in west-nile virus territory and there's been aerial spraying here in years past. The branches appeared natural. The staff did tell me someone else had bought a branch before for their bird, but I wanted some second, third and fourth opinions. Had to come to my budddies here, y'know?
