Guest briansmum
hi guys, sorry for my absence i've been away for a few days. i will catch up with everything as soon as i can. however i have a question i need help with. while i was away brian stayed with my mum, he loves her almost as much as me and she him but she's really upset because when she let him out he's chewed everything he could get his beak round. i noticed this starting a couple of weeks ago and i've been removing him from the situation everytime he started chewing and saying "no" he knows what no means because he stops and looks as me, but he chooses to ignore me  personally i'm not too bothered but when he's chewing wood with paint on he's endangering himself and my mum has said he can't stay with her again while ever the chewing is this bad because he's damaged things. he has LOADS of toys of all materials to chew but wants to rip off bits of furniture, i know greys have a tendancy to chew and be destructive but i'm worried this is a bit excessive. so i am in need of advice or shared experience. is there anything more i can do besides what i have been doing? Guest Lidia
It sounds like a nervous thing, perhaps he was trying to console himself because he's not used to being away from you. Your mother was probably too nervous of him, too, to move him off things he couldn't chew. I don't think it sounds excessive, just a little neurotic, and he might grow out of it. Guest briansmum
thanks lidia for your reply, that would make sense except he does it at home too though, it started a couple of weeks ago
lovemyGreys
xxbeccyxx, i cant offer much advice as my 3 greys live in their own room & so dont chew furniture etc.. I would continue telling him no & removing Brian from whatever he is chewing, hopefully he wil learn that No actually does mean No & not ignore mum
judygram
Beccy, maybe you could offer him some wooden toys he can chew up, he seems to be craving the destruction of wooden things. Even chunks of wood, anything to try to focus his attention on something other than the furniture. I know this is frustrating for you and especially so if it started before you left. Also try telling him no and removing him to another location to try to break the habit.
Guest briansmum
thanks lovemygreys and judy, i guess i just need to keep doing what im doing until it gets through. he has plenty of wooden toys judy he has tons of toys of all shapes, sizes and materials. if i remove him from the window ledge for chewing that, put him on his playstand and offer him a toy he soon drops the toys and flies back to the ledge that he was chewing before. patience patience patience
judygram
Maybe he likes a chew with a view. LOL Just keep doing what you are doing, persistence will evenutally pay off, hopefully before the window ledges run out.
Guest briansmum
i hope so, but like i said, i couldn't really care about them, they can be repaired or replaced brian can't if he swallows the paint or varnish
kiwibarb12
Beckett loved to chew the house up (slight exaduration)- he would pull open doors to chew in cupboards. He also chewed the lino in corners in the kitchen. Turns out he was trying to find a place to nest, and was making the sawdust to lay the eggs on. now she is banned from free range and gets put back in the cage when she comes off the said cage. She is allowed to be with me though. Anyway, my point is maybe your bird is sexually mature and looking for a nest site.
judygram
I don't think that is the problem as her bird is still too young for that, but thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like Beckett was chewing everything in sight and I guess when they reach sexual maturity that is a problem in itself, but you seem to have handled it well. Guest briansmum
yes he's still a baby, but i'll watch out for those signs when he's older. though i do know he's deffinately a he. i think it's just an extreme case of "beaking" everything, i managed to get him to sit and chew one of his toys for a good 10 minutes yesterday rather than my window ledge
Talon
Beccy, have you ever tried opsicle sticks? You can buy them in any craft store. Talon loves to chew those up, and they are very cheap to buy. Maybe it would satisfy both the desire to chew wood easily enough, and keep him away from the harmful chemicals of the paint or varnish.
