Hi all,

I bought a snack from the local organic foods store that looked like a healthier version of pretzels. After I brought it home I read the packaging noticed how healthy the ingredients really are. The ingredients are in this order: brown rice, whole quinoa, brown flax seeds, brown sesame seeds, whole amarinth, whole millet, chia seeds, tomato paste, chipotle chile, filtered water, sea salt. (All organic) I was impressed that salt was the last ingredient and there is only 160mg (7% dv) of salt in a serving size of 15 pieces. So it seemed like a great snack for the birdies and my baby Tali really loves them. Keep an eye out in your local health food stores. They are called Sticks & Twigs by a company called Mary's Gone Crackers.

Even though that seems like a small amount remember our birds are just a fraction of what we weigh so it can still be a lot for a bird and being listed last means it has less than any other single ingredient but that still could be way too much, in my opinion I would only allow it occasionally as a treat and not too much at that. They really shouldn't have anything that has any added salt to it for a lot of foods have salt in them naturally.

Well if you do the math it's only 11mg of sodium per piece, which is less sodium than in a cup of chopped kale or broccoli, and most of it ends up as crumbs on the ground :P I think that makes it a pretty smart treat and of course treats are only an occasional thing. :) I've been using them as a reward for training as well as for trying to endear her to my housemates.
