GoDiego
Hi everyone, I have just been looking online at some of the online parrot stores and came across one selling cinnamon Sticks as a tasty treat and foot toy. Are these safe to give to birds, if so I have loads in my kitchen, but would like to confirm first. I've done some searching on the internet but have found nothing so far confirming that they are a safe treat.
Birdnut
I can't answer your question for sure, but I do know that cinnamon sticks are included in the Cockatoo Supreme treat mix made by Goldenfeast.
GoDiego
I've also seen this listed as an ingredient in this treat mix, there are also a lot of online parrot stores that are selling them as individual treats. However, I'm completely confused as there are quite a few sites saying that Cinnamon, especially the rolled bark can be dangerous? I think to be on the safe side I will avoid them until I see something concrete that they are safe. If they are dangerous, the parrot stores really should review what they are selling! In doubt, don’t give anything to your parrots. There maybe several kinds of cinnamon or severel refined types (I don´t know!) I am sure your parrots will survive without cinnamon, even if cinnamon is safe food.
Jayd
Hi, we've been giving cinnamon sticks and powdered cinnamon to all our fid's for years, we spinkle cinnamon powde on so of their rice dishes along with a little Anise seed. CINNAMON sticks can be used as a "food toy" for parrots. Ground cinnamon can be used on soft foods as a mild anti-fungal treatment for candida and other types of yeast, and aspergillus. Cinnamon also has a mild anti-bacterial effect against strep and staph bacteria. It can be sprinkled on fresh foods in hot weather to help prevent the growth of pathogens on bird food.http://www.landofvos.com/articles/kitchenxv.html
GoDiego
Thanks Jayd, this was the confirmation I needed. I will give him one later today
Birdnut
GoDiego, you are very wise to look into this question. We cannot assume that just because something is being marketed for birds, that it is safe for our birds. Ultimately, we are the ones responsible for what we hand to our birds. Glad to hear the cinammon sticks are okay. One of our birds seemed to enjoy chewing on them when we tried the Cockatoo Supreme mix.
