lovethatgrey
Emma my african grey escaped through the back door on Thursday morning. She is fully flighted and she escaped because I wasn't careful, vigilant and did NOT make sure she was in a room with a closed door or in her cage. I went out to gather all of the recycling bins. It was grey and cloudy that day, a bit windy too. Because I had two boxes to carry, I had kept the door half way open for what was merely a few seconds. That was all it took. She had heard a sound that agitated her and just sped out and kept going. Please don't ever make the same mistake. They are extremely quick and when this happens, it is a very devestating experience to go through. I count myself lucky to have gotten her back and safe 50 hours later. She came home calm, unharmed, just as sweet, and strangely, she even seems more confident. I don't think it's possible to be so fortunate a second time around. Birdnut
Thanks for this important reminder. Our birds are flighted, and we have a protocol for going in and out of doors. But all it takes is one moment of distraction and inattention. Your experience has caused me to be even more vigilant. A good wake-up call for everyone. And I was so happy to read of Emma's recovery. crossfit
Thanks for the reminder. I find myself thinking that its okay just for a sec once in a while. So far I haven't acted on that. Stories like this keep me focused and I just need to not think its okay, even for a second. Again, I am so glad she is home.

dw310
This s my worst fear. Me opening a door for just a second, a guest in the house who doesn't think about it...on and on. I can certainly empathize with how quickly that must have happened. So glad this story has a happy ending!!!!
judygram
I don't think it's possible to be so fortunate a second time around. Lets hope you never have to find out Adina, give that Emma a kiss from me.
Luvparrots
Thank you for sharing this with us Adina. Because of Emma's flight I have doubled my precautions. I have now put up the bead screens I have had for about 2 years on my front and back door. My house looks like a tropical bar in the old Bogart movies with the beaded screens (all I need are the flystrips) front of my house looks like a hoochie coochie bar because I also have a red door. I don't care. I know how much Emma loves you as it is so clear in all the marvelous videos you so generously share with us. Ana Grey is the same way, I know she loves me to pieces but like well human beings or any living thing. We all want to be free and given the opportunity I know that Ana Grey would take flight in an instance. You got your baby home, I pray she has fulfilled her wanderlust. jessdecutie18
I don't think it's possible to be so fortunate a second time around. I agree! You were very lucky and Emma was great to go to another human for safety I'm going to have to start being stricter with hurrying through the doors too, as Yoshi now has 4 flight feathers grown in and will be flying soon!
