Hello from Nashville Tn

We picked our Grey (Bioko) out when she was just a baby being hand feed. We took her home when she was on one feeding per day. She would eat her pellets and veggie but the breeder still wanted us to feed her once a day for about two or three more weeks. She is now 10 1/2 months old she is such a great bird. She loves us both dearly right now. She will let me but her on her back and lay there while I pet her belly. She hasn't spoken a word yet, but she sure can whistle like a sailor. She woof whistle and makes all the sounds of the microwave and any type of whistle that I do she will copy in a couple of days, she also makes the sound of my alarm clock as well. I work with her daily to get her to talk but she hasn't spoken or tried to say any words as of yet. Question I have is how long before she will try and start talking, I've read different articles that say most don't start talking until 1 or 2 years old. Any information on this would be great if anyone can share. I'm hoping that the whistling isn't her way of talking even though it is very cute and loud at times I still want to try and get her to talk. Any sugguests?

Hey devans, glad you decided to join us! There is no schedule to get your grey to talk. They start talking when they want. My grey starting talking at around 10 months. Some members on here have birds that talked sooner, some later and some never at all. I just talked to Ana Grey like I would a child. When I come into the bird room I say good morning and when I give them water I say something with water in the phrase. By the way, my grey won't say water or good morning! But she says, want some apple,I'll be good, come here and other phrases. I guess what I mean to say is that they pick up what they like to hear and what sounds/noises get them what they want. What things they do or say that get a reaction from you, good or bad. So just talk to your grey, they understand so much more than people think because they are always watching us. Every move we make.

If you have any pictures of Bioko we would love to see them. Welcome to the Grey family!

Hello Devans and welcome to our family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Bioko, that is an unusual name, does it have a special meaning?

Be aware that not all greys will talk but the odds are in your favor for most do but she has plenty of time yet, my grey didn't talk until she was one year of age and some here have ones that were even older so be patient and you will more than likely be rewarded with her talking and chattering away.

Its not true that if your bird whistles it won't talk, that is a load of garbage for my grey does a mean wolf whistle and she talks too but usually they start mimicing household sounds first like the phone, microwave and things like that.

Do read thru many of the threads here for lots of useful information and don't hesitate to ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can.

Thanks for sharing the picture of Bioko, she is a beautiful grey.
