JillyBeanz Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 The pet shop near me where I sometimes visit was putting a strange "thing" in the bird cages last weekend - it looked like a bit hairy caterpillar! I asked what it was and it was the millet string things you get for budgies and other small birds, all sprouted. The birds were tucking into them with gusto! He told me how to do it, soak them overnight, shake off excess water, and then put in a plastic bag in the airing cupboard - they will sprout in three days! It's been a week now, and the millet looks just the same as a week ago! I think I am doomed in the process of millet sprouting!!!
pearllyn Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Hmmm, I'm not very good at sprouting either - I buy my beans ready sprouted from the co-op, they're washed and all ready to eat or boil - Alfie tucks right in. I might try the millet, just to give her something new, but I don't hold out much hope!
JillyBeanz Posted May 4, 2010 Author Posted May 4, 2010 Give it a go - see if you are a little more successful than me! I've checked again, not a sprinkling or a tinkling of a sprout in sight!! Oh well, looks like cress is about my limit!!!
Luvparrots Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I have one of those sprouting kits around here. Now where is that stuff???
Elvenking Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Here is an eHow link to sprouting millet. I might have to try this as well. http://www.ehow.com/how_4430697_sprout-millet.html
lovethatgrey Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 Never heard of sprouting millet spray. I do sprout chickpeas and sunflower seeds though. Very nutritious and delicious for both fids and humans. Love them in our salads.
JillyBeanz Posted May 11, 2010 Author Posted May 11, 2010 It's official - I can now safely say the only things I can grow is cress and weeds (not in the same bowl)!! The millet sprouted about two shoots out of four sprays - I'm just not cut out for this sprouting lark
