tarts or candles

It is both. First, the candle scent is chemical based and that can be toxic. Secondly, most candle wicks have lead in them to make them stiff and not sputter. That smoke is definitely toxic. However, even smoke from pure cotton wicks can cause problems in quantity. I am not sure what a candle tart is but if the candle is a scented wax candle, it is potentially toxic.

I use reed diffusers - they were "okayed" by my AV. They don't have any toxic chemicals in them, and they don't fill the air with "particles". I used these both with my cockatiel, and no with Harvey - and there was certainly no ill effect. I agree with Talon - those Yankee candles are full of so many chemicals, I am not sure how we survive when burning them, let alone our fids with their very delicate respiratory system (though they sure do smell good)!!! :)
