The only thing I can suggest is that you read the various threads on the forum about different foods to give greys (including this one). Perhaps the way you are presenting the food is the problem, if you give raw veggies, try offering cooked etc...

I feed my gray HARRISON'S HIGH POTENCY COARSE GROUND, a variety of fruits and veggies, nuts in season, popcorn air popped and meats. I did a lot of reading prior to my gray purchase and if I spell gray, grey it is because many of the books I read came from Europe. Several written by bird specialists remarked that greys are scavengers and will quite happily dine on road kill and other types of carrion. All this with no apparent ill effects. But these same books voice against feeding raw meat due to bacteria and possible ill effects. Several times I read to give your grey a cooked chicken or turkey bones to chew on. My first gray loved this treat. My current one is fussy about things that get her talons dirty and will only eat the chewy "gristle".

Ok guys, this is only my second post on this forum, but I can't resist putting my 2 cents in. Parrot diets are a subject that is very near and dear to my heart. I work alongside some very knowledgeable bird veterinarians and breeders. I have hands on experience with birds as small as finches all the way to emus and everything in between. I currently work with birds of prey at a wildlife sanctuary and before this I worked with parrots, hand raising and such.

My personal first rule for parrot diets is: NO SUNFLOWER SEEDS!!! Keep in mind this is my personal opinion, but to me sunflower seeds are no better than crossing cocaine and a big mac. They are highly addictive and full of fat. My personal Grey doesn't get them in any form. She gets seeds about once per week, I give her the Safflower Gold seeds. They are free of sunflower seeds.

My Grey gets pretty much anything that I'm eating except for the forbidden foods of course. She loves my breakfast smoothies which contain fresh bananas, pineapples, blueberries and strawberries with orange juice for a mixing medium. She will also grab catfish fillets from me and run away with them. Her main diet consists of a variety of pellets. She gets fresh fruits and veggies daily, also she gets different nuts for treats. An occasional nutri-berry is hidden in a puzzle toy for her to open and pull out. She gets superworms which are like a giant mealworm. I have a jar of them frozen, I pull one out occasionally, thaw it out and she goes absolutely BERSERK over them. After all, in the wild Greys do eat insects.

She has a block of mineral clay hanging in her cage that she has the option to chew on. Greys do gather at the mineral deposits in the wild as well. She also gets Nekton vitamins in her water once per week.

Ok, that's enough of my thoughts for now. I hope to hear from you guys soon.

Thanks,

Joel

Thanks for sharing your views. As far as im aware the vast majority of our members here do feed a very nutrional diet to their greys. We always advise feeding fruit, veggies, pulses etc.. alongside a pellet or seed diet.It is also advised to keep sunflower seeds as a treat.Just by looking around out bird food room you can see what advice is on offer to current members & members of the public just browsing.

I have decided with doing so much research on proper diets these days ( boy it changes constantly!) But I feel good about finally there is research being done more to try and perfect a solid diet for our greys today. Years ago Exact was only what we fed or and seed and ofcourse proper safe fruits and veggies.

For me I plan to feed Harrison's diet and I might mix some roudybush in it and most likely organic fruits and veggies. I don't eat junk myself and have never fed my dogs from the table. My dogs eat one of the best kibbles on the market, I said one of the best but everyone has their own opinion on whats the best "smiles" I may on occasion feed a pine nut or 2 as a treat but I doubt seeds will be included in my greys diet. I will make up my own mixture of pasta and sprouted beans and I do have a recipe from my vet for a awesome healthy birdy bread :)

Hi I am new to this forum and a new grey owner. Since I have gotten CoCo I have been introducing hime to new foods everyday. I think he was mostly on an all seed diet before I got him.

I have given him the following foods.

wild rice

black beans

steamed chicken

boiled egg with the shells

graham crackers

baby food sweet potatos

carrots

celery

nectarine sliced

apple sliced

bananas

mixed seeds

I use peanuts for treats as they say they are not good as a staple.

he loved the chicken rice and beans. The carrots he loves but nibbles at the fruit but not with gusto. the graham crackers he really likes too.

My guys love their Harrison's (all varieties), plus the usual fresh foods. They rarely ever want any of our meals, although I have offered. They will poke at these "strange" offerings, but don't actually eat any. I think this is a good thing, as I don't have to be concerned about them jumping into my dinner. LOL

Hi,

My CAG Indy is on a pellet based diet (Harrisons). I usually give her some oatmeal for breakfast which is loaded with carbs and keeps her going. Handfeeding also keeps the bond strong. During the day she has access to the pellets which she likes and fresh water. In the evening she has fresh fruit (apple, grapes, mango, passion fruit) and veggies (corn, spinach, watercress, rocket, carrots, broccoli etc). She does have her treats in the form of mixed nuts.

Hi all.

My Eclectus is on a NO seed diet, just fruit and veg so coco my grey also eats rather healthily. He has fresh fruit every morning with a few zupreem fruit bend pellets thrown in. In the eves he has a scoop of african gey seed ( uk rob harvey) and then his veggies etc. Both my birds get half a boiled egg once a week in their diet and on a different eve a chicken leg with meat and bone which they love. Sometimes i let them have the odd prawn or bit of fish as they love that too. Once a week with their fruit i give them a tiny teaspoon of live yoghurt with their fruit too. I also give them palm nuts and sugar cane during the week on a skewer. sometimes i give them most of their dinner on a skewer just for a change too................they eat better than i do!!!

I have a pelletted diet for him to eat throughout the day. In the morning he usually gets some oatmeal with some veggies. After dinner he usually gets a little of what we had for dinner (we have an early dinner. And in the evening he usually gets one of my homemade parrot muffins (each time i make a batch they turn out a little different :P) and some veggies.

When i give him a treat for praise, it is usually grapes (his favourite!!!!!!) or another fruit or veggie.

My CAG has Harrison's pellets in the morning.

In the afternoon he will get his fruit and veg consisting of grapes, pomegranates, sweetcorn, sugar snap peas, blueberries and redcurrants. Some days I may add more veg and fruit depending on what I have but those are his usual. Then after he will get some snack of nuts (no peanuts) and a millet spray along with more pellets.

In the evening he will get soaked seeds and pulses and then at bedtime I will replace them with less than handful of seed mix and some pellets.

Special treats during the week would be half a hard boiled egg with shell (crushed), a small biscuit, potato chips (if i'm having one), fruit smoothies, sweet potatoes mashed. I try to give him as less human consumption food as possible especially if it's junk food.

I'm not a junk food fan so my cag won't get any either

Post edited by: Kiyu, at: 2008/11/13 16:12

lol same with mine. I don't think mine likes the texture of banana. Even if it's dried, raw or made into a smoothie he won't have any lol. I decided not to force him anymore. If they don't like it then they don't :P
