judygram
Most people describe sun conures as screamers, I disagree, maybe some are but mine is not. Granted she can be loud sometimes, but can't they all be a little loud sometimes even greys. They also call them a little clown and I see why. She is into everything, she rides around on my shoulder and tries to get into whatever I am doing and gets herself into all kinds of positions. One night as I was washing up some dishes in the sink, she hangs on to my shirt and tries to get in the water, well low and behold she drops into the dishwater. I grabbed her out real quick but thankfully the water was not scalding hot and she was ok, but she stayed on my shoulder for the remainder of the task. I think a sun conure makes a fine first bird, certainly a colorful one, with the bright yellow body and touches of orange, green and blue feathers, she certainly is bright. How many of the members have or have had a sun conure and were they screamers?
Tari
I do not have one. But my breeder friend use to have two pair three of which were given to here cause they were "screamers". It is my believe they were turned into screamer by incorrect handling. And that they may of been no noisier then any bird but that the shrill calls were just to much for them. They never really seem that loud to me when I go out to the farm. Great post thank you.
judygram
You are so right, Tari, if I ignore her for a long period of time or other people come into the house, she will scream, but it is not that loud to me, and she is just letting me know that someone besides us are in the house. They don't like to be ignored and I imagine in some households they are ignored and that is why they scream to get attention. Sunny gets plenty of attention so it is not a problem. I'll take a sun conure anyday.
MARIR
I also have a sunconure, and I can say the only time Sammie "screeches" is if I go upstairs without him, because he thinks I'm going to take a shower without him...he sits on his shower perch and hangs any which way he can...laughing and clucking...He also gets excited when I come home from work, he gets loud then also, and "screeches" and yells "mom""mom" until I get in the house.:silly:
judygram
I'm jealous, my Sunny does not talk, you got lucky, but they are cute little buggers aren't they. See not everyone thinks they are screamers, I am not by myself.
CeasarsDad
Sonny.. our Sun screams only in the morning really... but I wouldn't give him up for anything.. he is a darling.. He is so attached to my daughter Erica it's unbelievable to watch them together..
judygram
Probably like my Sunny is to me, she will cling to me and won't go to anyone else and it can be like pulling teeth to get her off me sometimes. She's my little napper, she goes with me to take a nap and cuddles up to me and is very quiet, no sound out of her. A very sweet little bird, I love her to pieces.{Love-000200BF}
CeasarsDad
Yes Judy.. Just like that. You know, before we got Sonny we had Ceasar.. At that time Ceasar didn't know how to scream.. So he made way different sounds then he makes today.. Today there are certain times during the day when you would swear that I have 2 sun conures.. A small one and a very LARGE one. Ceasar now SCREAMS just like the Sun does.. So for Grey owners that are thinking about adding a Sun to the family.. Remember, Greys WILL pick up the sounds of the Sun.. For better and for worse.. Tari
lol Thats funny. So far my grey has not done that. But she is not much in the noise department to begin with. She rarely talks and barely screams unless she is attacking a bad toy. lol
judygram
Yes my Josey will scream like Sunny, it sounds like I have two sun conures, and she also copied a cockatoo call for a while after she had spent a few days with the breeder who has several. Oliver
My sun conure just started screaming when I brought my grey home. I need to give her extra attention because she will not scream if I am holding her. It is so loud that my ears are ringing. I have got to stop her because I do NOT want olly to pick that up. Just my luck, he won't talk but will start screaming like Percy. God help me
judygram
Sorry to hear that, Oliver, but yes pay a little more attention to the conure because like mine she is jealous. My Sunny spends a lot of her time out of the cage on my shoulder and she does not scream when she is there. Now is someone strange comes in the house she will scream at them, I guess letting me know that fact. Just hang in there, even though Josey does mimic Sunny's calls does not mean she does it a lot, just occasionally. Be sure to reward Olly for periods of being quiet so he knows thats what you want him to do.
busere
I don't have a Sun Conure, but we have a Quaker and an Indian Ringneck. Piper and Lucky both used to get very loud and obnoxious to try and get attention. However, we started ignoring them when they get like that and go get them when they are less vocal or talking. Now, when they get excited they churp softly and do little happy dances. And when I say the word "apple" they really get's down and boogie! I can relate simply by the ear piercing screech of the smaller parrot varieties, it's not just Conures, Quakers and Indian Ringnecks can be very, very loud if they want. In the bird room/office, which is very close quarters, Piper's call can make your ears bleed (okay so that's a slight exaggeration, you get the point). kiwibarb12
Oliver - if you have changed your routine with your conure then from what i have read, you may make your conure think he is no longer top bird in the pecking order. Let him out of the cage first, greet him first, feed him first, then go to the grey. It is hard not to fuss over the new boy, but, just like dogs, you need to establish who goes where on the pecking order, and since the conure was there first he should get preference. You need to continue the habits you had with your conure, and make new ones with the grey. Kind of like kids - don't forget about the old one when the new one comes along - even though it needs more care.
judygram
Barbara that is exactly what I do in my house, Sunny was there first and so she comes out of the cage first before Josey, my grey. And I don't have any problems with either of them, they know the pecking order.B)
fourtrap
Hi Judy I have a sun and he is great, if I walk by him and not say hello he will squak but other then that he is quite. He is into hanging up side down on his toys or the top of his cage. As beautiful as he my be ,he still has the worst bite for his size and with them they don't let go until he wants to, as the saying goes dynamite comes in small packages.
judygram
Yes they do have a mighty bite, and mine has bitten me many times, much harder than my grey ever has but she can be the sweetest thing most of the time. She will come up to me when she is on my shoulder and kind of purr and get close and give me kisses.
BMustee
The Sun Conure I had did have a little bit of a screaming issue, but it never really bothered me. Otto would scream as load as he could when he heard me come in the door after work. I think it was more his way of letting me know he was excited that I was home because it would only be a minute or two of ear shattering noise. At one point he was screaming for attention because if he would just be making his normal Sun Conure noises and my step mother started to scream at him to shut up, thus teaching him that screaming would get some attention during the day. As soon as I realized what was going on I sternly told her that her yelling through my door at the bird was only making him get louder and if she wanted him to stop SHE needed to stop...I think I may have worded it a little meaner to her, but he stopped screaming after only a few days after she did. The funniest times he would scream was when he knew I was washing the car...ohhh man would he scream! I would have to go inside and get him so he could play in the hose! Seeing him running in and out of the water would melt your heart.
ziggy
Hello, Sun conures are in the conure family and are known to be very loud screamers. All conures are loud screamers. Alot of articles compare them to macaws. They ask the question if you want to know how much a macaw scream well listen to a conure. In theie natural setting they are very loud and voistrous. Their screams carry for miles. So yes sun and all conures are very loud screamers( at morning and at dusk) Believe it or not this is a way to do a head count to see who made it through the night and who made it through the day. Clever little birds arent they.
Nychsa
Hi Judy, Well, as you know Jigme (aka Jiggy or Jiggyman) isn't a sun conure but rather a dusky. I think I'm a lot like you, namely that his noises I don't perceive as screaming. He can be loud, but I love his calls I think they are adorable. He likes to watch the birds in the feeder every morning and he calls to them, when I leave the room he has a different call for that, and when I return from somewhere he calls again. When I take the dogs for their morning walk I know the birds may find that distressing that 1/2 of their flock is leaving, so I have a bird sitter video I put on while we're gone. It's a video of an aviary and all it has are the different parrot calls on it. The minute that starts up Jiggy goes to town! He chirps away at the top of his lungs! Maybe I'm crazy, but I love his calls. I think some may consider them screams, but I don't. Bella does imitate him perfectly and sometimes I can't tell which one is which. They had me in stiches the day before yesterday - I laughed so hard I had tears rolling down my face! Jiggy decided he was going to take a bath in his water dish, and that totally stressed out Bella. She want running around the top of his cage, haning upside down peering in on him from every possible angel and she was saying "Jiggyman! Jiggyman! What the hell!! what the hell!!!" Oh my gosh was I laughing!!!

Oh my gosh was I laughing!!! That would have been a sight for sore eyes and I would have been laughing too at that, thanks for sharing that little tidbit with us. They certainly can make us laugh with all their antics and words. I don't consider Sunny's calls as screaming but a non bird person does but you get used to it and it is not like she does it all the time, just at certain times. I love her to death and she was my first parrot and got me hooked and then I had to have another, so therefore I ended up with Josey and they are both great birds. BMustee
To add a note to what Ziggy said... Most South American parrots will communal flock…Amazons, Macaws, and Conures will merge into one big flock in the wild. The theory of why Conures are so loud is based on this. Such a small bird flocking with such larger species would never get heard, so they evolved to have a big bird voice to match the rest. Most African birds don’t communal flock and will only be with members of it’s own kind and this is probably why most of them are so much quieter…they don’t need to out scream anyone.
