chezron Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 My husband forgot that cherry pits are toxic. He watched while our grey ate and split one cherry pit. I am sick with worry. Will on pit kill him? Please advise.
Talon Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Can you call an avian vet and ask? That's the best advice.
judygram Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Did you can an avian vet, surely they would know or should know? Let us know what you find out and what happens.
chezron Posted January 5, 2010 Author Posted January 5, 2010 Hi all. An avian vet said this, "One cherry pit in a bird the size of a Grey should be followed up on, but chances are that a healthy bird will be able to metabolize the cyanide. The liver is a magnificent detoxifier. Still, have him checked out by your vet to be sure - mainly knowing for sure his kidney and liver function are good. What you'll want to look for is any change in balance, vomiting (as opposed to regurgitation), a change in droppings (especially the color of the urates) and anything else that you just feel is off. Trust your instincts on this. That's why I want you to stay calm and not panic - you see?" Good advice, I thought. Anyway, good news, he is fine today. Thank you for your concern.
Luvparrots Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 So glad to hear that your sweet grey is fine today. You're a good and loving parront.
Jane08 Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Glad he is ok, must admit at the start I fed our 2 cherries pit and all  and took me ages to realise they shouldn't have them.
judygram Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Glad to hear he is fine, good thing he is healthy as he is.
