JillyBeanz
Harvey is one year old on 16 December and, following extensive forum reading, I have always intended to book him in for an annual wellness check. What do I expect from this check? I can guess the obvious - chest sounding, weight check, eyes, beak, talons, nares etc - but do I EXPECT bloods to be taken and faecal cultures as a norm? There is absolutely nothing wrong with Harvey - but how far do I go? I'd be very grateful for your thoughts on this - and whether you take yours for "non-sickness" vet visits. I have absolute faith in my vet - luckily the vet surgery my family has used for 25+ years has TWO qualified avian vets!!
pearllyn
I'm actually just about to check Alfie in for a check-up too. We don't think there is anything wrong with her at all, but after all her hoo-ha over the summer, she was due for a final check about now, so we intend to keep it. I'm just expecting a basic check up, but if the vet thinks she needs something extra so be it. you might be inclined to go down the same road with Harvey - basic check with extras if need be. If it were a dog or a horse I'd know pretty much what to do myself, but Alf is a different matter and I need to trust in my vet completely. Char
My vet does a crop and fecal gram stain and draws blood for a CBC and Albumin every 6 months. I request a full blood workup on the yearly checkups. I like to know that the all the chemistry, calcium and liver and kidney enzymes are normal. particle77
my vet also does an exam every 6 months, with some additional tests once a year. actually because Earl was only 4 months old for his first exam he just had a second exam at 5 months, now he's on the 6 month schedule.
