Hair Straighteners

One of our new forum members Jenny asked a question that has never crossed my mind!

Jenny asks if teflon coated hair straighteners are dangerous to our birds? I've checked and mostly all hair straighteners are teflon coated (and obviously heat up to exceedingly high temperatures)

It's not something I've thought of, but it's something I use every day and wonder what others think about using these (I must say, it's not something I'm going to give up - I have to leave the house you know!!)

What's your thoughts?

And here was me thinking you were straightening Harveys feathers for him

I also use it and have never had any problems. I don't use it in the same room as them. There is only so many things I can blame on the birds and having a bad hair day is not going to be one of them. My friends already think I am nuts so I don't want to give them any more ammo.

I am no expert but I think I read that the teflon has to be heated to a certain temp before it releases it's deadly fumes. I think if your hair straightener got that hot is would fry your hair. I would just not use them in any close proximity to the birds.

I iron in the same room as my fids, I don't believe my iron is teflon coated and tbh it doesn't get that hot either but I hadn't thought of the posibility of it being harmful to my birds in fact they enjoy me being close by and I thought the steam in the air would be good for them. Am I wrong to do this?

I know my iron is teflon coated - I don't iron in the same room as Harvey - he gets banged in his cage as he is always wanting to "help" and tries to land on the bottom of the steam station (very dangerous!).

Harvey does join me when I'm straightening my hair - up until now. I think I shall stop him from this activity too (as I know GHDs are teflon coated too).

These birds!!!! :)
