Palm Nuts

Hi to all,

I know that I personally have had trouble getting Palm nuts in the US. I have found a place in California that sells them and I thought I could share that information. The company is Gold Crown Macadamia. I usually get mac nuts from them for our Hyacinth and the last time I placed an order I asked about palm nuts. He is harvesting them now through about Feb. You have to call them and ask for them, they are not on their web site. He told me when you order them he sends someone up the tree to harvest and he ships the same day as harvesting to ensure freshness. I placed an order for them and they should be arriving this week. I am anxious to see if our birds will like them! I have placed several mac nut orders with this company with no problems so I do not anticipate any trouble with this order. Their number is 1-800-344-6887 or 1-760-745-4396 for anyone who is interested!

I think your friends in the states would run over and kiss you if they could!

We are so lucky here in the UK, we can buy them in abundance - quite expensive though. You can freeze them and take them out one at a time.

Your birds will love them - the peace they give a parrot owner is precious!! ;)

Your welcome! They should be about $4.00 per pound. He said he generally advises to get 25 pounds at a time to make it worth while. I think one person could get 25 pounds and share with another bird lover if 25 pounds is too much at a time. I have plenty of room in my freezer so it shouldn't be a problem for me!

I got the palm nuts today. Renegade absolutely loves them! She could hardly wait until I cleaned them to dig in! Our hyacinth is a little more skeptical of the new treat, but he is showing some interest. I am sure with a few days passing he will try one too!

He would! I buy a kilo at a time and they last forever!!!

Glad your birds are enjoying palm nuts - wait until they actual manage to crack the nut too!! They love that more than the flesh!! ;)

Hi! I'm new to the board - with a Hyacinth and a Patagonian. I dream of a grey one day.

I bought some of the palm nuts from Gold Crown - hoping they were the type from Brazil. Turns out, the type of palm nuts from California grow in Lafayette, LA (they neighbor just trimmed his palm and threw the nuts in the trash).

Anyway, wondering how to best clean them before freezing? The flesh is tough to peel off - very fibrous and slippery.

So far the hyacinth just looks at us and throws the nut away - either with flesh or the peeled nut. Apparently its not sweet enough for her.

My hubby cracked one of the nuts with a hammer, but even that was looked at with disdain. Even the conure couldn't be persuaded. I tried the nut meat and found it to be pretty bland and like chewing wood.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Paula (on behalf of Tanzi and Indigo)

Hi and welcome, I've only ever bought imported palm nuts (they don't grow too well in the UK)!! We give the whole palm nut to Harvey - they love chewing through the shell, to the stringly flesh and then to the prize - the actual tiny nut - which he sits with for ages chewing and chewing until he gets through it!

Your baby probably is throwing it away as it is alien to it and hasn't decided whether it wants it yet.

I don't know about the sterilisation, but I would think a damn good scrub and then into the freezer would kill off anything in them.

Why don't you go over to the welcome room and introduce yourself and tell us a little about yourself, your bird and your family. Jill x
