JillyBeanz
It's sat there - all day, looking sad (it doesn't look to palatable to be honest in comparison to Kaytee!) He's eaten his veg and his seeds - but the pellets remain untouched. How long can I leave these before I have to give in and give him his Kaytee back? PS. The Harrison's has a different taste to the Kaytee - the Kaytee is more fruity - yes - I have tasted them!!!! :woohoo:
pearllyn
Jilly, I've been trying to convert Alfie to Harrisons since March. At first she wouldn't look at it, but I kept offering it. Then when she had her health issues in May-ish, I started putting AviX Bird Builder in her water - it's supposed to make them more open to trying new tastes, I also started mixing in Harrisons Birdy Bread, which you can add your own yummies to, and at last she started to nibble on the Harrisons! Then she stopped again!. Now I'm giving her the superfine Harrison, soaked in a little hot water with some spices etc, and she's nibbling again. I'm afraid it's a case, for me, of patience patience and more patience. She is def eating less seed tho, so we're maybe on the right track! Harrisons website has tips on conversion. So long as she's eating plenty veg and stuff, I'm givning her less of her seed, and leaving the Harrisons out. Just last week I watched her use her beak like a spoon and scoop out every last pellet on to the floor, before tucking into her veg! GOod lUck!! xx
JillyBeanz
He's such a picky eater - he turns his "nose" up at everything he really doesn't want - anything that he does want he'll try with great ease! I've just put the Harrisons on it's own on his playstand and usually when I put food on at tea time he tucks in and we don't see his head for at least 30 minutes. He's just flying around not knowing what to do with himself as he won't eat the Harrison's! Do I cave in and give him his teatime veggies and seed and Kaytee - I still obviously want him to eat! judygram
I would continue to offer the Harrisons in a separate bowl if you can and give him his other pellets and foods as always, it might take a while for him to start to eat them or maybe he never will. At least you tried but give him more time.
lovethatgrey
It might take a while. Keep being determined. All I can say is that Emma loves her Harrison's.
JillyBeanz
I have Harrison's dust in the bottom of the cage! I don't think he's eaten a great deal - but there's definitely dust!!! Mind you, it does look like dirty putty - so I wouldn't be so interested either!!
tommyn
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but when I was at the veterinary clinic with Meiko the vet suggested I try Harrison's for my macaw, I forgot to ask while up there but what's the general price for it? JillyBeanz
Hi Tommy - just checked your profile as I knew you were from around here somewhere! The Harrison's is a little more expensive that say Kaytee or other brands - but you use less and there is less waste. I get mine from www.midlandparrots.com - I'm sure they'll ship to Ireland - you're probably nearer than me!! He's since had it mixed in with his veggies at teatime and I have come into a bit dust when it's on its own in his cage! I would say for your macaw that you'd need the bigger stuff though!! tommyn
Thanks for the reply Jilly, I'll give them an e-mail now to see if they'll ship it here.
lovethatgrey
You must keep persisting in the face of resistance. I also add Harrisons pellets to my warm mash. Some parrot owners add it to their birdie bread. Have you tried their birdie bread Jillybeanz?{Feel-good-00020114}
casper
Good look everyone with the pellets. Here is a link Tommy for another supplier, compare prices and see which works out best for shipping. http://www.24parrot.com/product.asp?pf_id=5801a&QSI=ec53af65-8920-49f2-b44b-d5258c684c35
rbpittman
To get Dixie eating her Harrison's I soaked about 5 pellets in some apple juice (no sugar added) and mixed them with her regular food. She couldn't help but get some into her since they were slightly mushy and when she tried to move them to get to the "good" stuff it ended up on her beak, in her mouth and on the other food. It took about three weeks of doing this along with adding non-soaked pellets into the food along the way. She now has a bowl of just harrison's in her cage all day and I fill it twice each day - usually 10-12 pellets each time.
pearllyn
Hmmm - Alf isn't fussed about juice, will try again tho. she does pick through the birdie bread tho, so i mix alsorts in with that! Will keep persisting! x
