pga7602
Do you guys remove the bars separating the Newspaper tray from the actual bird? What I'm finding is that the poop will sometimes land on the bars and it's making a mess. My bird never goes to the bottom of the cage, so having the bars there just makes it harder to clean. Do you guys remove yours, or have it there and clean often?
Luvparrots
This is a personal choice. Some people remove the grate, some leave it in place. I leave my fids' trays in place because I just don't want to take the chance of them suddenly deciding to go foraging in their poo. I am retired so I clean my fids' cages every evening and cleaning often is not a burden for me. Pga7602 why don't you introduce yourself in the Welcome/Introduction Room so everyone can say Hi. pga7602
Ok Luvparrots. I'll go say hi now! Keep the replys coming... I want to see what the majority does. Luveparrots: any secret to getting the really dried out poo off the cage?
Luvparrots
I would spray it with vinegar and water and then wipe it off.
lovethatgrey
I keep my grate in all the time. Every day I remove the bottom newspapers and use a paper towel to remove dried on crap on the grate. Once every single week I wash the grate with HOT water and Oxyfresh Gel. Parrots = Mess and this is VERY normal. Welcome to being a parrot owner. judygram
I too use the grate, Josey doesn't spend much time on the bottom of her cage but for the times she is there I don't want her stepping in her poops. I change the papers every other day and wipe the poops off the grate and take out the grate every week and clean it thoroughly.
SchroedersJen
I keep the grate in Schroeder loves to throw the toys in his foot toy bin on the bottom of the cage and if the grate wasn't there, they might land in poo. I invested in a pressure washer and wheel the cage out once a week and hose it off. It beats scrubbing.

Jane08
I also keep the grate in as I know if I took it out they would have a free for all at he bottom of the cage for the left overs and poop would be all over them. I am a little clean obsessed so I clean the grate everyday. I just take it out and put it in the bath.
she
I dont use the grate. I just keep the cages clean.
Joolesgreyuk
I keep the grate in, it seperates parrot from poop ;-) besides Beau would shred all the paper in 5 minutes flat! I clean the tray and change the papers every day, whilst doing this I also clean the poop from the grate but when it looks too dirty I take the grate out and wash it properly. Argyle (being a smaller bird) only needs cleaning out every other day and his cage didn't come with a grate, I find he doesn't go to the bottom of his cage - even if he drops goodies! particle77
I don't use the grate. Its easier to change the newspaper several times a day, than to carry a 4' X 3'6" grate into the bathroom everyday for scrubbing.
Debandbella
I never use the grate either,
pga7602
The no grates is catching up to the grates lol I guess I'll keep using it till I'm sure he won't go foraging at the bottom. Oh.. Why the vinigar? Does it melt the poop or somthing?

If only it did, vinegar is known for it cleaning qualities and it is safe to use around our fids as opposed to bleach and other household cleaners. katana600
I am voting to leave my grate in but it is because for our cage, the grate is separate from the paper tray. If the grate were left out, there is a gap that looks big enough for the parrot to get stuck, or a puppy to stick a nose up there to get a nip. I found a nifty tool in the grocery store in the tooth care section a brush for dentures. It was less than two dollars, plus it has a two prong head, works really well to clean grates, get between them and shortens my yuck factor... well that is unless someone visited with dentures and picked it up by mistake. Just kidding, it is WELL marked.

Codys Mom
I leave the grate in , not takeing any chance of my 3 running around in poop lol , my Eclectus would have a feild day with no grate shreded papers every where
chimaysmommy
I also use the grate at the bottom...When Chimay first came home to us and was getting used to the "lay of the land" we had the grate in with a layer of towels on the bottom and newspaper on top of that to cushion any educational falls. We kept it that way for around a month and a half before removing the towel and moving the newspaper below the grate. Chimay really doesn't frequent the bottom of his cage much. To TRY and make cleaning easier I spray a bit of Pam on a paper towel and wipe a very thin layer of it over the grate. I'm not sure that it really makes much of a difference but it's worth a try! Ha ha... I would keep the grate in just on the off chance your birdie does end up on the cage bottom...don't wanna go to pick up your grey and end up with poopie feet walking around your hands.
