Clicker Training

Tricky

Recommended Posts

I know we were talking about clicker training in another thread, but I couldn't find one entirely about this method. I heard about it today and went out and bought a clicker, and I'm beginning to train Jack. Who else has been using this method? Care to share tips/experiences?

I will! I'm working on just touching a target stick with Jack right now and he seems to be catching on. I can't wait until he's ready to try new tricks! I'm so hopeful that this will really work. Jack's behavioral problems were making it very difficult for me to bond to him, since I'm not his #1 favourite person.

Well I guess if Lidia & Greylover don't know anything about it, then I don't feel so bad for not knowing anything about it too, If somebody knows let us know about it please, I just love to learn new stuff about greys.

A clicker is just a little plastic thing that makes a quick, two-toned click. Apparently the idea is to *click* during a good behavior, or a trick, and then give a treat. The bird learns to associate the sound with treats, and repeats the good behavior. A lot of people seem to swear by it.

Here are some pages that explain it:

Guest Monique

There are some great clicker training books out there by Karen Pryor. "Don't Shoot the Dog" is the best one I have read. Of course it is about training dogs but that does not matter it is just the animal as she has used in the book to illustrate.

Training has been coming along okay, my main issue is that the only food Jack will eat without question, and quickly, is cheese. It was okay in the beginning but now I know I have to find something else... but he's so picky. Any suggestions?

Hey celery, glad to know someone who's also tryinng this! I haven't been training Jacques (yeah everyone, I decided to change the spelling. On facebook, Jack is the second most common bird name. No no no. At least now it's not exactly the same =P Plus, I am at least partially from France...) because I didn't have any treats he could eat quickly enough, but my mom picked up some plain cheerios today and I'm going to try them out tomorrow. I haven't actually bought a book, just used tips I found on the net. Let me know if you find the book helpful, perhaps I'll invest in one.

I've been using an emory board as Jacque's target stick. =P

I like Jacques because it means "one who supplants" and "supplant" is defined as "To usurp the place of, especially through intrigue or underhanded tactics." And, if I get him DNA tested and he turns out to be a girl, I can change it to Jacquelle, which has the same meaning, and I can still call (her) jack for short.

Wow, how do you even begin flight training?

Amazing... Vinnie sounds just too adorable. I may have to get a vasa some day. :P I think Jacques enjoys seeing me have to stop what I'm doing to clean up his poo.

We took him up to the marina where we keep our boat today. Started out on the harness but he just won't have that, so we put him in his travel cage and then he started to enjoy himself. He just does not like to talk on cue, hehe. I couldn't click/treat for any good behavior today because all of the excitement made him uninterested in any food, I only saw him drink water once, and the only food he took was one plain goldfish cracker. It worried me a bit but I figure, he obviously knows it's there so he can't be too thirsty/hungry... does Vinnie still seemed interested in food when you take him outside?

When his harness is on he constantly tries to grab it and bite at it, he'll be fine if he's on my hand but if I try to put him on a perch, the lead part freaks him out and he starts screaming a bit. It was worth a shot but I just think he's MUCH happier in his travel cage. I wish I had known the harness existed when we first got him so I could have gotten him used to it as a baby. Oh well.
