lovethatgrey
I was just wondering because someone from another forum just purchased a few bags of Zupreem and found these white worms in them!   Frankly, if I found that I would throw the whole package out, however I wonder is.. whether it is dangerous for our parrots?

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/08/03 03:
judygram
Since I use Harrisons I keep it in the package it comes in, thats what the bag suggests for the best storage, the inner lining is foil and it keeps it fresh as long as you close the zipper like opening. I know some people keep theirs in the refrigerator or freezer but I don't buy that much at one time.
judygram
Almost forgot about the worms, I really don't know if they would be harmful for the birds or not, maybe someone who knows will let us know.

Luvparrots
I keep my fids' pellets in airtight plastic containers. I buy in small quantities so their pellets stay fresh. If I bought in larger quantities, I would freeze the pellets.
she
Worms, yuk,I would be in touch with the manufacturer, unless they are old pellets that have not been stored right.I keep the Harrisons in the bag they come in in the fridge. Oh ,harmful or not my birds would not get infested pellets.
rbpittman
I bought airtight glass containers for my fids food - one for the harrisons (dixie), one for zupreem (sterling), one for lovebird seed mix (george who won't touch a pellet) and one for their mix of dried fruit/nut bland. I had thought about the plastic type containers but with so many questions about the tnings that go into today's plastics, I've managed to remove almost all of them from my house. Glass doesn't absorb the oils that may be present in the foods and keeps them fresh. -- Robin
LuvThoseGreys
I buy my Zupreem in the 40 lb. bags and store it in plastic totes. It stay fresh and worm free! The bag you bought may have been sitting at the store too long. Just like if you have an old bag of flour or nuts it will get those worms. I doubt very much if they are harmful to the birds as they would more than likely eat them in the wild! But I would'nt want mine eating that either, I would return it to the place you got it from. Char
I buy Harrison's in the 5 lb bag. 1/2 goes in the freezer and 1/2 goes in airtight glass jars. I would not feed my birds infested food. The worms are in there because the something laid eggs in the product at some point in a warehouse before packaging and the eggs hatched into the larvae. Could be maggots. That is what makes Harrison's so special is the way it is handled and packaged. You know it is not polluted or contaminated.
nitngl
I have seen the same type of infestation in a friends bag of Zupreem pellets. They turned out to be Mill Moths, which took over his house and he had to get rid of all boxed food items, flour etc. I would get a refund on the product and not feed them to the bird. SchroedersJen
My vet, Dr Ikeda, said that if i ever find bugs in the food, to stick it in the freezer and kill the bugs and let the birds to continue to eat it. The bugs are extra protien and fine. They occasionally eat bugs in the wild, and my bitds love freezedried meal worms. Any good bird store will also carry different bug treats. Unless you have reason to believe that the bugs have been treated with pesticide then they are fine to eat if they are dead and a non poisonous type of bug.
