CAG,TAG,or Blue front Amazon?

I want a bird that is playful, somewhat social (to take with me places), and that will be ok at home if I only spend about two or three hours at night with it. I know birds like to squak, and talk, but I can't have one that is real loud all the time. My boyfriend works graveyard. I just love both types of birds. Cost is not a factor. I am ok with it being a one person bird as long as the bird is not really bad about the other person. Thanks for any input.;)

Of the three I would say the amazon is a big no no. They are loud. They think life is a party and want to enjoy it.

My TAG is quite but a grey may not work out for you.

Budgies, parrotlets, cockatiel or maybe an Ecletus(sp) might work for you. But to be able to take it around with you I think a cockatiel would best fit your needs.

A single quaker is not to bad on the noise if you get it young before it picks up that yelling habit. Mine only yell when the cat gets to close.

Or maybe you can talk the bf into sleeping with a radio on and or maybe earplugs?

Even the most quite birds have to be allowed times they can be happy and noisy. Its a bird thing.

JUST from what you have written I would go with an Amazon. Amazons are far more outgoing and also more playful. Either bird will be fine with a 3 hours at night as long as you also spend some time in the morning when you get ready - would that work okay? You could put a shower perch up for them to sit on while you take your shower and get ready?

Amazons are generally much more aggressive a bird than a Grey they are also much more demonstrative. So while a Grey will tell you they love you and then take a hunk out of your finger an Amazon will say I WANT TO TAKE A HUNK OUT OF YOUR FINGER at which point you can say okay maybe lets not play together today!!

Hi Monique..

This is exactly what I found out about my Yellow Nape Amazon... A biter from the day I brought him home.. and I never broke him of it..

All these birds present challenges and great rewards. There is no perfect bird, thats for sure! ;) I think with proper conditioning any of them could work. I would continue to research a bit and get as much info as possible before making the life long commitment. Becoming a "parront" should be a serious decision, but its worth it.

Amazons are generally much more outgoing and louder than greys. Amazons also become more aggressive than greys when sexually mature and then cycle throughout the year. But make no mistake, greys have their screaming moments/fits and aggression too. Also their are exceptions to every rule, each bird is an individual. I believe a properly conditioned grey can accompany you just fine on outings/meeting new people/new places etc, but an amazon will likely be comfortable with this more easily.

So again, continue getting feedback and read up (if you have not already) so you know as much as possible before deciding. Remember, these animals live 50-75 years so they truly are a life long committment. ;)

I have both greys and amazons. I think if you want to take a bird places with you , you would be better off with an amazon. Greys can be nervous. My amazons happily play on top of their cage all day when I am at work and are only noisey around supper time or in the evening if they want my attention...but when they are noisey, they are really noisey, but never for long.Another bird you might consider is a conure. I have blue crown conures. they are very personable and mine sits on my shoulde when I am out gardening shouting at any one who goes by " Hi Rickey" (his name!)Pick up the movie "Paulie" and see what you think. If I could only have one bird, it would be a blue crown. (sorry grey people)I have 3 of them and they are loaded with personality and talk up a storm. They travel well and unlike my bigger parrots, will actually talk in front of people!

My amazon is around 27 years old and has yet to bite me. He is also not loud. He is a red lored amazon. But he is not the norm either.

I got him from a friend that had him as a breeder for 7 years she had this bird.

He got attacked by a racoon and when she went to catch him to take him to the vet. He ran right up to her and steped up on her arm.

I have had him for about 8 years now. He is the sweetest thing and a huge perch potato.

So as you can see each bird is different but as a whole amazons are loud and can go into overload and bite.

Mine is just not normal. I also would never go out and say "Hey I want an amazon" lol Cause Im really scared of them at a rule. lol

But Joey is strange and many people that are scared of birds have even held him.

I have read every-thing I could find, and have been to several of the pet stores and bird shops around here. I have decided to purchase from one owner. The bird itself is what I can't decide on. She has an Amazon comming in three weeks and an CAG in four weeks. She is also looking into the TAGs for me. I know I will find one out of the ones she is bringing in. She has been helpfull and informative. I always love the Greys and continue to go back to wanting one of them over any others. She said her Grey doesn't usually go to other people and she will go to me. I love the TAG I also petted at another store. I also like the coloring of the BFAmazon. I want to let the bird pick me if poss. Just looking for comm. Thanks;)

That is always best if the bird can pick you versus you picking it. But whatever route you take I'm sure it will be the adventure of a lifetime for you. I of course would take the grey and it very well could turn out to be one that would be social, but thats the chance you take. Best of luck in whatever you choose and keep us informed of your decision, but I'm hoping you choose a grey or it chooses you, fingers crossed.:)

life does change with the weather.

I keep going back to the greys. I went to some more stores and found a couple of Greys, read more on the Amazons, and my choice always comes back to the Grey. Only now I have one more choice to make. I know I want a Grey and I know where I want to purchase it from but I don't know if I want a TAG or CAG? I think I lean more to the TAGs for some reason. I like to see them both and like the colors on both. Any com. on your personal choices?

TAG's in my opion from reading forums and talking to other people with CAG's and TAG's for the most part a more laid back. Not saying all are like that but in general they are.

Some people believe they are not as smart as a CAG that idea I have not formed an opion about yet.

My TAG is very quite and is still nice to strangers and does not bite.

But I have been told she is either a) well brought up and b) just a very good bird.

I think it is a little of both.

I was very careful when she was young to interduce her to many new things and often.

If a grey is what you have your heart set on think that maybe what you should go with.

We well be here for you the whole way.

i agree with tari the consensus seems to be that TAG's are more easy going than CAG's. i did originally want a TAG but they are practically impossible to find here in the UK so i have a CAG now who i love to bits, but he doesn't like anyone except me and my mum. he's pretty laid back at the moment but he's only a baby, im not expecting him to stay this way. so if you want a more relaxed bird a TAG is probably the way to go. but at the end of the day it is down to the individual bird and owner, there are not garantees

I didn't know this, and the way you've put it here is hilarious, so KARMA to you!

Here in WA stat, they are available at a couple of bird stores. The lady at the pet store is going to see if one of the breeders that she trust is going to have any. She will bring it to her home and hand feed it until it is almost ready and then let me feed it and interact with it while we wait for it to be weaned. She is realy great. I like to talk to her and watch her play with the birds in her shop. So it won't be till next month that I can even put a deposit on one. It is so hard to wait. Good things come to those who wait,YES? Thanks to those who have given their advise and to those whom are about to give it.;)

Yes indeed, good things come to those who wait, and I can guarantee you the wait will be worth it. I am glad you have found a breeder you can trust, that is very important to you as a buyer, and once you put your deposit down I hope time flies by for you so you will have it home to begin the bonding process.

Keep us informed.:)

I just asked the breeder to keep me informed on the arival of her baby so I can give her a deposit. Still won't know for a little while. I think I will let fate decide for me if I am to get a CAG or TAG. I like them both. Mabe I will get one of each ha ha:P
