Meet Java

Java is our three year old poicephalus, a red-bellied hen. She is a joy, she gets along with everyone in the family and doesn't know a stranger. She doesn't know she is a little "quarter-pounder". We like to joke that she perceives herself as a 500 pound gorilla.

The time we spent socializing and making sure everyone in the family is dedicated to her and both of our daughters want to be the one to "inherit" her.

We considered long and hard about getting a second bird and have been assured that our best result will come from getting another species from the same continent. We have also been advised that an African Grey is not so much a "touchy-feely", cuddly parrot and each of them need a different kind of interaction. We will be very careful with introductions and let the two of them decide what works best. Wish us luck and lots of patience.

Thank you all for your warm welcome. While reading so many posts, I am impressed at how politely this group communicates, even when disagreeing on important topics. When it is time for Juno (CAG hatch date 5.18.09) to come home, you will be a lifeline. Already I have been inspired to start making toys just for him. I don't think any of my friends are as enthusiastic as all of you. That is only because they have never had a parrot. It takes someone very special to understand and create a bond with such a magnificent intelligent companion. Thanks again to all of you.

Aww, thanks. We knew she wasn't colorful. We didn't expect her to talk. She just has the biggest most vibrant personality anyone can imagine. She has a wicked sense of humor. Even though she has bitten each of us, we didn't hold it against her and the time spent with her is always rewarded with uproarious laughter. I am reading all your posts and getting to know you better. This forum is what I have been looking to find for three years. It wasn't until we committed to Juno's breeder that I kept looking at every site with African Greys. Andrew and Tui's site sent me here and it is the best of the best. Thanks again.

Thanks folks, she has been the light of our lives and gave us confidence to get our CAG. The lampshades have not been safe this week, today all of the lamps are bare. The silk mango tree has also been a target. She knows something is up with that big cage next to hers. We are putting a piece of acrylic on top of the new cage and teaching her to stay off!

We all love this little character, but she is certainly full of herself. I know we are going to have our hands full when Juno gets here, but have nothing but time to make the best of it and make sure she is still able to enjoy her freedom in safety while they both learn to coexist. Thanks to everyone on the forum, I have some good ideas which may help and will take it slow to allow each of them to reach a happy place and share our time and our home.

The biggest concern I had with getting Juno was that it might decrease Java's freedom and enjoyment of our home. That worry is quickly dissipating. In 2 1/2 years, she didn't speak clearly more than fifteen words total. Since finding Juno she started jabbering a lot more. Since getting the recorder and playing back at slow motion, I identified some phrases and my effort to understand her has motivated her to speak more clearly.

Juno has been here less than two days and I have heard more chatter and seen a much more gentle and solicitious little red-bellied parrot. She sweetly chirps to him and calls him pretty pretty birdie. I have heard her say: want out, wanna get out, come here, whattaya doin? whattaya doin' buddy. Over and over she is blowing him kisses. It is amazing. Little did I know she was a coy little minx.
