Ionizer bad for my bird??

I am a new poster to the group but have been lurking for a while. I have got some good info from all of you and when this question of my birds health came up, this is the first place I thought to post.

I have a 15 month old Congo African Grey, his name is Jango. I have had him for a little over two months now and it has been an amazing two months!! But when I first got him I noticed that my eyes burned and itched a lot. Turns out I have a mild allergy to all of the dander that he puts off. No big deal, I am willing to work through it. One step I recently took to try and combat the allergy was buying an Ionizer (electronic air filter). When I told the lady that fostered my bird before I bought him, she said that she heard somewhere that an Ionizer can be bad for birds. I asked her why and she couldn't give me an answer. I honestly don't see how it can be bad for them. It takes dust particles, bacteria, and pretty much everything else out of the air and I know that dust is bad for them.

Any feedback you all could give me would be outstanding. Thanks a lot.

hello firebird , good question.

I do not know anything about ionizer , but airco seems to be bad for our parrots.

I put that question , because I am sick , when it is hot and even in holland we measured temperatures we never had!!

I follow the groep with much interest , like you do.

I think she is getting confused with ozone generators. Ionisers are not

I don't know if it makes much of a difference but it does say in the front of the owners manual that it generates a small amount of ozone.

I am not even sure what ozone is! I know the ozone layer. Thanks for the input people.

I think she is getting confused with ozone generators. Ionisers are not harmful as far as I can tell. I have one in my birdroom near the filter and another in my bedroom to help with my asthma and have done for several years now.

Ioniers are not the same as air purifiers and can harm birds as well as children/elderly with breathing concerns because they create heavier ozone levels. The ionier divides particles causing them to fall to the floor. If the particle was harmful, it is not harmful in that way anymore, but if you don't run your vacum everyday, particles you cant see will pile up and you & your bird will be breathing all of it in. This can cause all sorts of lung problems.

Ozone is O3 (big O little 3 like in h2o) so ozone is O3 just oxygen to an extent but it is not very safe to breath in by its self..... i had to clear out houses when i used one to get ride of smoke and mildew smells cleaning carpets .... ionizers are ok as far as i know they dont put anything into the air all they do is change the polarity of the air and dust to attract it

Yes do talk to other people I am not saying that it is safe 100% but to the best of my knowledge of how it works and everything else I believe it is safe but what ever you find out please let us know.
