Fendana
Hello everyone! I am hoping to speak to you often in the future as I will need your advice. I am waiting for our little CAG baby to wean and be ready to come to us in 4 or 5 weeks. I will be needing advice on how to welcome him home and make him comfy and secure and as unafraid as possible as it must be a bit terrifying at first. We are a loving, animal mad family and our pets all get on famously as we are laid back too I expect. We have two Fischer Lovebirds in a large Aviary cage indoors, see profile pic, this was taken on the day we brought them home, so they look a little unsettled, only pic I could find tonight! they are not tame as not hand reared but are dear little things and love me to sing stupid made up songs to them and make them lots of toys for mental stimulation. I can't wait to bring our boy home, this site is invaluable to me..... Fendana X
judygram
Hello Fendana and welcome to our family, we are so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and your little baby Cag. So I assume this is your first grey, then you are in for a treat for once you have one you find out how wonderful they are and cannot imagine how life would be without them. Is your baby close enough so you can visit as that will help the little fella to be more comfortable with you and you could get some pictures too so you can share some with us. You will find lots of useful information in our many threads so do take some time to read thru them and ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. He will need some time to settle in when you first get him home so it might take a few days or weeks before his true personality comes out. Since he is a baby I would put some towels or blankets down to cushion any falls and leave his perches down lower until he gets more confidence in perching. chimaysmommy
Welcome Fendana!!! How exciting! I'm pretty convinced that there is no slower increment of time than what is experienced while waiting for a new FID's arrival. Lol! I was an anxious nervous wreck before Chimay came home to us. Of all of the advice that our breeder had given us, the best was the schedule to keep him on upon first arriving. We kept inside/outside cage time at intervals of 2 and 1/2 hours inside for every 45 minutes outside (with an exception of bedtime of course...we left him inside all night). This seemed to get him acquainted with his surroundings much easier, possibly because of the secure feeling he had from being inside the cage. By the morning of day 3 he was right at home! Can't wait to hear more about your new baby!!
Fendana
Thanks so much for your warm welcomes! I have had an update photo of the little boy CAG today and he is gorgeous. I have decided to call him 'Squonk' after a Song by Genesis I have always loved which is about a mythical creature. I told Venus and Apollo, the lovebirds' of his forthcoming arrival but they are as yet unenthusiastic. Do you think they will be company for him when we go out if their cages are side by side?... myafricanqueen
CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW CAG...I bet you cant wait to have him home! As far as CAG's and Lovebirds sitting side by side out of cage. I would say that I would not view that as a good idea. I have a lovebird as well and I would never allow them out together side by side as one bite from the grey would be all it would take and byebye lovie. The difference in sizes of their beaks is just too much. My grey was socialized with lovebirds cockatiel babies etc, when she was a baby but, I think that its just not safe. You can never predict what they might do. Your lovebirds are beautiful!! Cristen
Fendana
Hi Cristen, thanks for your reply. I really meant to say that would they be company for the CAG if the lovebirds and Squonk were inside their own cages when we are not around but the cages were side by side? I know what you mean about the size of beak.... curtains for the sweet lovebirds! Fendana
