vet + food...

Stressful week...we took my grey to the vet on Saturday as he was clearly under the weather.

 

She is still in there now, and will be until the weekend. They had to run a number of tests and the vets first thoughts were, fatty liver, PDD or a kidney problem. Latest update, it sounds like it is a virus of the air sacs - she is on a course of antibiotics.

 

One thing I am glad of though is related to her diet... the seed part of her seed/fruit diet is a major no-no. I have been using the UK’s top pet shops premium parrot food which is one of the worst for greys...advised to move on to Harrisons and continue the fruit/veg mix. This is why she has a potential fatty liver. I am outranged that this leading pet shop is aloud to sell this parrot food.

 

Will keep you posted on her health…I think we are out of the worst as she is now eating again…

 

p.s. we also found out she is a girl!!! her name is Will - :-)

Oh my, I am sorry to hear Will is under the weather but hope she gets well soon and be back home with you.

 

Don't blame the pet shop because they only sell the products, it is up to you to make sure she gets a healthy balanced diet, take a stroll thru the bird food room for ideas and suggestions for what she should be eating.

It’s the food from pet smart/pets at home... We used this mix combined with fruit and veg. As judygram said in the previous post, I shouldn’t blame the pet shop as I should have know about alternatives sooner, but as a warning to others...please don't rely on knowledge from pet shops...(even some of the specialist avian shops I have visited sell recommended similar seed mix for greys...

 

Our vet has recommended and can provide Harrison’s, so we will be switching his diet gradually when he is home. Do you recommedend Harrisons?

Harrisons is suposed to be the best but each to there own i supose it expensive but they dont eat it in the wild but thats my opinion I maybe wrong but your vet recomended it to you but would he had said Harrisons if he didnt sell it ? Dont get me wrong im not having a go at you or your vet its just what makes Harrisons so special is it a magic formula do they know more than other food produceres any animal can get sick weather it eats the best or average food its just like humans some get best steak others get mince dont mean to say the steak eater wont get sick

Out of curiosity, what is this terrible bird food you are talking about??? Don't we get a name??? And how did this food cause a virus?? Regardless, glad to hear Will is doing better. Congratulations on your little girl.

Dave, One of the things that makes Harrison's so special is that it is organic and does not contain a lot of the preservatives that the others do. It has a lot to do with the way it is handled and packaged also.

I recomend Harrisons.It is organic and has a wide veriety of natural ingrediants.I always believe in taking an avian vets advise regarding feed.My vet stocks Harrisons.Both my grey and tiel have it.
