teaching 10 week old to step up

Put your hand close to the abdomen in front of the feet and push gently to get them to step up, it takes them a little off balance and usually will step up, if he does step up praise him lavishly and say the same thing every time you do it. Pretty soon it will be natural for him to step up and you won't even have to say it but you should so he knows that is what you want him to do. Hope this helps and let us know if you need more help, be glad to provide.

hi all, thanks for the feedback. I keep trying and he keeps his feet very firm on the perch and I push a little and he will not step up no matter what. I have to pick him up first and then he will stay on my hand/arm. if i push his chest with my hand he is almost going to fall over before he steps his little foot on my hand....i guess in time. maybe he is not ready.

what you're gonna have to do (in my humble opinion) push your fingers/hand underneath his belly and don't give in even if he sqawks/nips and tries to run and once he does, praise him LIKE CRAZY in a very loud/exciting voice for a freakishly long amount of time. also, use a clear verbal cue BEFORE/AS you reach towards him (up, step-up whatever you'd like).

in either case stop what you're doing now because the longer you and your little grey baby interact unsuccesfully this could form into a habit which you don't want! start over again and use a sweater to cover your hand if you are afraid of being bitten because the baby will sense you are scared and this will make him afraid too becuase you aren't predictable with your actions. good luck!
