TinyTimneh
Hey all, TinyTimneh here from good ol' rainy Canada Going to pick up Harrisons for the fids this week, probably friday. I was wondering what size bags I should get? I know the bags only stay fresh for 4-6 weeks but what size should I get to last that long? I have Jacko the TAG who'll be getting the High-Potency Coarse and my tiel & linnie will be getting the High-Potency fine/super fine. For right now I'll be doing the recommended near exclusively feeding of Harrisons.
judygram
I would get the small bag, I think it is the pound size for the next size up is five pounds and that is too much for one bird, don't know what that works out for in metric.
TinyTimneh
lol don't worry I hate the metric system it's pounds, inches and gallons for me I think the smallest bag I've seen around here was 1 pound so that's what I'll go with.. thanks judygram
she
I get the 5lb bag.It is stored in the fridge and I find it keeps ok .Harrisons recomend the adult lifetime for tiels once they are used to pellets.
TinyTimneh
Yeah the tiel (and linnie) will be going off of it after the 6 month period... the only reason I'm feeding it to her now is because her and the linnie's big moult should be coming soon and I'm hoping a good dose of fats and proteins will help grow in some nice glossy strong flight feathers. She never got over the nasty petstore clip she had when I first got her so I'm hoping if she goes through a big moult she'll have enough new feathers coming into to protect them (she tends to knock them out or break them). Plus her skin's looking a little dry too.
lovethatgrey
What I would do is... purchase the 5 pound bag and then divide it in portions and freeze it until needed. I think that is more cost effective since Harrison's pellets certainly isn't cheap.

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/02 03:
Char
Whisper goes through a 5 lb bag in about 6-8 weeks. Have you tried the Power Treats? It is Whisper's favorite thing. You can only give them 3-5 per day though.

Post edited by: Char, at: 2009/07/02 03:
judygram
I have never tried the power treats, maybe I should get Josey some and try them.
TinyTimneh
I wasn't sure if it could be frozen lovethatgrey, thanks for the idea (especially cuz the vet where I get it from it easily an hour from my house with traffic--plus like you said it ain't cheap) will be trying that... how long can it stay frozen for? I know it sounds silly but I don't want to buy a huge bag and then have it get freezer burn or something lol. I'm actually looking at picking up a bag or two or power treats as well everyone's skin is kinda dry plus I ran out of treats lol.
gingerfrank
I've just had to buy the 5lb bag as the vet had no 1lb bags left,i usually buy 2 x ilb and that lasts my bird the month,it's nice to know their getting nice fresh food every 2 weeks. But the 5lb bag is cheaper,so your 5lb for the price of 4lb. ginger
lovethatgrey
As long as the package is sealed correctly - freezer burn should not occur. I purchase the 5 pound bag and ony take out 7 days worth at a time and the rest stays in the freezer until I need some more. Power treats are a daily staple in this home. Both birds love them and it really helps add sheen to their feathers and alleviates dry skin. I give a bit more during the winter months.

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/03 17:
