Lady Pym

It is so hard to see another animal suffering and in obvious need of help. It is heart breaking, and when we know better it makes us want to help. I am a firm believer in 'doing' something. Doing nothing is not the answer. Having said this, it does not mean that the 'doing' has to involve taking the critter into our own personal care. I am happy that you 'did' something by informing your vet and having them help with the situation. That's definitely a win/win situation for all concerned. Thank you for having the ability to take action instead of being a bystander. I'm glad for Kizzy's sake that this bird did not enter your home and jeopardize the lovely relationship you have together, but at the same time, I'm happy that the other bird has a chance at happiness in a new environment ;-)

Too funny! Lady Pym will bark at dogs in the house. This causes them to go up to the cage, when this happens she growls at them and they all cringe and move away! My dogs are used to it and now ignore it, but I do board other people's dogs, and they all fall for it! She seems to have a great time doing this, and it also means the other dogs learn early to leave her and the other birds alone ;-) My Jenday Conure will do an alert call which my dogs respond to by running to the windows and barking. Sometimes she makes the alert call just to entertain herself ... I know this because she is not looking out of the window at what would be the intruder ... instead, she settles herself on a perch facing where the 'action will be' when she makes the call and is clearly enjoying herself! Lady Pym also meows like a cat. (I don't have a cat, but at one point in her life she did live with a cat who had kittens.) When she really wants my attention she meows like a little kitten. So cute ;-)

Welcome ;-) I have a senior grey and several other birds. I have a Maroon Bellied Conure, so very similar to your Green Cheek ;-) I also have a Jenday Conure and some Rosy Bourke's Parakeets. They are all delightful. The house is littered with feathers and bits of paper most of the time ;-) You will really enjoy your grey when he/she comes along. Good luck with him / her. They are so lovely.

Oh yes, this is just one of many recipes ... my birds are picky too at times. I try to sneak in good things into their breads. Whatever birdie bread is not eaten is enjoyed by my chickens. ;-) My conures like bread type products more than the grey does, but she will eat some, especially when freshly made.

What a cute photo! If Kizzy does turn out to be a boy ... he could just be playing 'dress up' ... ;-)

Oh, Tara ... your answers make me so happy ;-) You will be the perfect bird parent. ;-) It does sound like you are being very responsible in every way. My TAG is on her 9th home with me (although she is about 41 years old now), and I will never part with her. Some of her homes have been good ones, some not. She's been lucky for the last 14 years for sure (me 1 1/2 years, and her previous owner was excellent with her.) She is so sweet and gentle despite all the upheaval in her life. I love her to bits and could never part with her, although in her previous owner's case, it was the right decision to re-home ... it is a sad set of circumstances really. I hope that you find the information that you need here ;-)

I'm new here too. I sure hope that someone is able to help you, to offer some suggestions, or that you find your answers from poking around on here. That is sad. She is obviously trying to communicate something to you, but what?! I'm glad you have had her checked out medically because they sure are complicated creatures. Good luck, and take care.

Welcome ;-) I'm new here too. So good that you are doing research first before getting your bird. I hope you don't mind my comments here. Of course, I don't know you or your situation, so I hope that I am not stepping over the line. There are so many things to consider. Good that you have permission from your landlord. Only thing is to think about is that a grey lives a long time and really truly bonds to you ... please make sure that you are committed to finding a place where he or she will be welcome if you have to move at some point. It would be heart breaking to have to re-home a bird for that reason. As for your boyfriend ... good luck! I hope you are right and that he does fall in love with your bird. If not ... what would you do if you already had the bird? Something to think about and be prepared for. I say this from experience in that one of my birds (a maroon bellied conure) was re-homed to me at 15 months because the girl that owned him had a boyfriend who didn't like the bird. I've had this bird for almost 9 years now. I always wonder if the girl regretted giving Pinza up. He's such a sweet heart. Sadly, it was evident to me that this particular girl's boyfriend wasn't particularly nice based on what my sweet little Pinza would say (language he learned while at their home.) Personally, in her case she would have been better to keep the bird and not the boyfriend! Of course, this is not always the case! My husband does not particularly like my birds, but he has learned to accept them, and even though he claims not to like them ... I do see him sharing his apple with my birds and talking and visiting them when I'm not looking ;-) They have learned words that he has taught them (and I'm happy to say most are good ones, none are swear words I'm lucky though, he and I both believe that if we have a genuine interest in something we should try to support each other even if the other one isn't feeling the same way. We live one life that we know of ... it is important to fulfill our dreams whenever possible. Anyway, i've babbled probably far more than you would want me too. Good luck learning as much as you can about greys. They truly are wonderful and amazing companions. My Lady Pym gives me joy every day. So do my other birds ;-)

Welcome. So sad that you are having this problem. I wouldn't even dare to suggest that I am an expert on greys at all ... I've only had mine 1 1/2 years. One thing for sure ...try your best not to convey your distress over this situation to your bird! If he sees or senses you fussing it could get much worse. It is hard, because it is upsetting to see that deterioration, but eventually I hope you get to the bottom of the problem. Others may have different opinions on this, but I know for me, if I focus on something I don't like or don't want, my birds seem to think it is great fun to do it more! They also sense my emotions and if I'm down, it is hard on them too.

Hi everyone, Just made a new recipe of birdie muffins today. All of my birds went nuts eating them. Hope you enjoy it: 2/3 cup all purpose flour 1/3 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup oat flakes 1/3 cup hemp hearts 1/4 cup quinoa 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1/3 cup applesauce (unsweetened) 2 mashed ripe bananas 2 tablespoons canola oil 1/2 cup almond butter (natural, no salt or sugar added) 1 cup frozen corn kernals (or whatever veggie or fruit your birds will eat) Mix dry ingredients. Add in corn kernals and mix again with dry ingredients. Mix wet ingredients together, and then combine with dry ingredients. Put into greased mini muffin tins. I made 3 dozen from this recipe. Bake at 400 degrees F. for 12 - 15 minutes. Cool and serve. ;-)
