  1. My preference would be my daughter however I don't like who she is with at the moment. I think children are best if they have a connection with the bird. I've read post after post on the other Grey groups of grown children who have adopted their parent's bird and are very attached to it because it either talks like the parent did or does things that remind them of their lost parent. That kind of ensures someone loves the bird and it won't get caught up in the used pet market hell. My daughter loves my GreycieMae and my other birds however if her situation doesn't right itself in time, I'm probably going to use the money she would have inherited and find one of the sanctuaries that I feel would best take care of them and right now I have one picked out.
  2. Those little magical baby eyes 😍 I get lots of help during the day 'working' too. The only easy bird is Huey. He likes to sit on his hanging perch in my office and just observe. Yesterday was a rare stressful 16 hour day. By 8pm GreycieMae was hanging upside down off the side of my chair biting the back of my arms, my ribs, even socking me in the back of the head a couple times. Her says "Daddy, enough work! PLAYTIME!!!" Sorry baby girl, gotta pay the bills....
  3. My Grey pulls fluff balls out all the time and they have a white attachment. It may just be the difference in skin color between the two. I don't like it that she does this as it started after her first exposure to a hawk and has since become a habit.
  4. That's nice. It beats my ziplock sandwich bag stuffed away in my special things drawer.
  5. Chickens? Too many. I have about 30 at the barn and 30 in the backyard. The backyard flock is all Silkies as well as young birds that will eventually end up at the barn. I also have some really small ones in the aviary with Huey and GreycieMae. That situation was forced on me a few nights ago when a bobcat showed up and made off with about 10 chickens. I got two back from the neighbors yard across the road where he hauled them off to and they escaped. I bought a kennel to set up and put them in but I need to find time to get it together and move them out.
  6. He came to us on Haliperidol for self destructive behavior. Every time I tried weaning him he would butcher his feet. It took me 7 months to finally get him off. He's a different bird now that he's not doped 24/7 tmp_24110-20180911_075130324738517.mp4
  7. Yes, they fatten up quick with the right care. Our Huey wasn't skin and bones but he was covered in a fine powder dander and was eating froot loops for breakfast. He's the picture of spoiled rotten health now! His feet are still a mess but not sure that will ever heal.
  8. He's a beautiful boy. Would love to know how the other guy is doing. I have a soft spot for the ones that end up in crappy situations.
  9. Interestingly your multiple posts across different subforums doesn't appear to be spam, as I checked the videos link in a sandbox. I started watching until a few seconds in where you claim the lifespan of the African Grey Parrot is well over 50 years. Nope. There's a study out there from the university of Michigan that shows otherwise. I stopped there.
  10. Definitely keep blinds down and cover any mirrors. Also if you have any hanging chains from ceiling lights/fans, put something on them that are very visible. We've had a new bird fly right through a chain and it wasn't pretty but she's ok.
  11. I would steer clear of the varnish too no matter what they say. Raw wood is best.
  12. The three bell swing is Huey's favorite too. He'll get on it and then go to smashing bells for a bit then have a look to see who's watching him. GreycieMae prefers the hanging bell in the video, she kind of needs to be a part of the bell herself. She's always been a nut.
  13. There's just something about that face and those feets that makes me melt. I'm powerless when it comes to that Grey charm.
  14. And this is how we ring the bell: tmp_24592-20180826_193406377014637.mp4
  15. GreycieMae and Huey approve of their new homemade net. Stevie even risking life and limb to give it a try. The old net just had enough. GreycieMae chewed it to death. Hopefully this one has a long and prosperous life.
  16. I had the casters break off on my first cage. I bought replacements from HD/Lowes and pounded them right in. They're a lot stronger than the el'cheapo originals.
  17. I do sort of remember a Teak. I must be getting old. Our Jardines, Rio, is 3.5 years old and has just gone through another growth spurt. He's dang near as big as a small Grey now and thugs around like he's some badass boss birdy. I used to be able to wrap my fingers all the way around when holding him but he's too big now.
  18. Wait...I'm losing my marbles I guess. I didn't realize you had a Jardines! Or did I?
  19. Awesome! Tell us more when you can. Hopefully someone who will let us keep tabs on baby Casper! ❤️
  20. Good luck. I know you'll find a good home for Casper. It's a good thing I don't live in California, I'd probably have a house full of Greys 😂
  21. In Huey's case, he's been doped by a vet for 10 years. Supposedly he is bi-polar which is why they put him on haloperidol. I don't fault his former owner as the guy wants the best for Huey, which is why he re-homed him to us. I almost bought into the diagnosis as Huey does start to act very strange once off his meds. What helped me to realize what was going on, our Caique started plucking over the same period that Huey went berzerk on us. Then they both stopped their respective behaviors at nearly the same time. I knew at that point I had two over-horney boys on my hands. Now the vet not knowing this, is kind of inexcusable in my opinion. They should know that raging hormones can cause this type of stuff and not just throw meds at a bird indefinitely. Also, he doesn't barber, he literally will chew his feet until they bleed, removing the scales and skin. It's terrible what he does. So far he doesn't do anything to his feathers.
  22. Well, as you know, they say to discourage that behavior, but I'm not one to buy into the common advice that everyone 'parrots' mainly because they're simply repeating what they've heard over and over. Since Sydney is so very much like our Huey, I'll relay what has happened for us. Huey came to us heavily medicated, which kept him dopey most of the time. When I tried weaning him cold turkey he would butcher his feet. So we tried weaning him very very slowly, several times. Three drops, to two drops, then one drop. As he came off his meds, he really took a liking to my wife ( I'm now referred to as second husband). She pets him like you're not supposed to do which makes him get down and do the dirty on her arm. He's also tried mounting GreycieMae but can't figure out how (we're working on it ❤️ ). Wife debated, should she stop doing this? She still does it but limited. Huey eventually stopped on his own and he also weaned off his meds without butchering his feet. We're over two months now. It boiled down to the fact he had raging hormones. Without his little outlet, he had to stay heavily medicated. So next year around January, I'm going to be on high alert for his symptomatic psychosis (which is why they put him on Haliperidol). Apparently Huey was just wanting some loving, awfully bad. I'm also going to setup some solid perches in the aviary, he could never get a good balance on top of a GreyicMae swinging in the breeze on their rope perch. So I guess what I'm saying is, I'd probably entertain the amorousness if it was leading to being able to handle them. It's really brought our Huey out of his shell. But I usually run afowl of the status quo...
  23. One of the most common cages people get for CAGs is this one. It's big and pretty well made. I have two of them. The bar across the top bolts on, so you could just remove it or not install it. I'm not sure why your vet discourages a 'play top' or what constitutes a play top. If I removed that bar across the top, my bird would still consider the area a play top. Good lucks!
  24. For sure she will forget the one little incident as long as it doesn't continue. Greys can and do pick their favorites but that doesn't mean you can't interact with the Grey. I have a female who sticks to me like velcro but still interacts with others in the house. We have another male who very much prefers my wife and I'm on a "no need to touch me" basis with him. I still work with him though but will never be able to pick him up and kiss his belly like my wife can. He'd rip my face off. I still love him just as much.
