  1. I am not sure how they are breaking - they just do. It started with one broken primary on her right wing. We left it there, waiting for it to fall out naturally. She could still fly without any issues. Later on, she kept tugging at it, so we thought that maybe it was bothering her. Carefully we cut it at the break and she was fine again. Then another one broke, we ended up cutting that one too. Not she has two more that are broken and she cant fly at all. Barely able to flutter to safety. I feel so bad for her. Has anyone ever had this issue before?
  2. I have perches throughout the house; the computer room, bathroom, etc. I take my girl with me as I move around the house. Her cage is in the living room (where we spend majority of our time). I will open the door and she is content with perching on the open door, hanging upside down in the door way, exploring the top of the cage, and decides if she wants to go back inside the cage to play with toys or eat. We had a play gym for her once, but it wasn't as practical for us, so we just keep the cage toys/arrangement fresh and new.
  3. My little girl has been with us for about 8 months now, and is really becoming quite an amazing companion. At 14 months old, she is really starting to learn many new words - and the sound effects are spot on! My favorite is the squeaking of the door hinge, it is uncanny! Anyways just wanted to brag and say hello! Her she is goofing around for the camera.
  4. I recently took my girl to the vet because I thought she could be plucking. Turns out it is a molt, her first one. She lost a ton of feathers all at once, and at first glance the vet thought she was plucking. Had a couple small bald spots. But then he took his fingers and gently rubbed them on the skin in a small circle. He had me do it too to feel the itty bitty pin feathers starting to come in. They were small bumps but kinda pointy. He said she is mainly molting but to keep up with the showers daily and make sure she has a lot of toys. Try to prevent her from being itchy and bored will help prevent a plucking habit.
  5. Took shiner girl to the vet yesterday for a nail trim and check up. She had been losing feathers by the handful it seemed; I was worried she might be plucking so I took her in. Vet told me she was really itchy from the molt and I need to mist her everyday until it calms down. I have aloe vera juice, but I read the ingredients and it is 99% vera and 1% lemon juice. Is this alright to use if I dilute it some?

    Won't settle down

He must have been over-tired. I now put him to bed on a schedule and it seems to be doing the trick. I cover him with a blanket and he starts to settle right down. If he stays up too late he too gets into "tired birdy mode" lol
  7. Well yesterday I opened the door and he slowly exited his cage, walked up to the top and paced a little bit. I started doing some chores and the next thing I knew he was flying across the room and landed near the window. Guess I have to remember to close the blinds some. Anyway I went over there and pick him up, guess he scared himself so bad that he didn’t mind stepping up on my hand. I sweet talked him a little and set him back on his cage. When dinner time came, I distracted him with a grape and got him to setup without biting my hand then gently placed him back until meal time was over. After dinner I opened his door again and let him out. This time I made him setup, taking the bite until he was on my hand. Once he I had his toes pinned I started petting him and sweet talking him, doing a slight earthquake anytime he tried to nip. Didnt take long and he got the idea. After only a few minutes I was able to touch him all over, his tail, back, head, beak, and under his wings. All the while I was praising him and letting him know what a good boy he was. Then we did step-up practice, I am so impressed with how willing he was. After a few successful completions we took a break and I let him on his cage. Just to see how he would react, I brought out “the towel” to start practing, he didn’t care for it much but stepped-up anyways with it in his sights. We sat on the couch and I brought the towel closer to him, ever so slowly until he started getting uncomfortable. He walked up my arm, to my stomach and starting climbing up my chest to my shoulder, it felt good to know I was his safe spot. I hugged him told him it was alright and after a few minutes put the towel down. We had accomplished so much yesterday I didn’t want to push it. This morning I opened his cage door to take out the food bowl and he came over thinking it was play time. It was a big change from the growling I use to be greeted with! LOL So proud of my Tango!
  8. Day three of having my little man home. We have spent our time together figuring one another out, carefully studying the other LOL Currently he is full of veggies trying not to fall asleep. So cute! But introducing for the very first time, Tango! Didnt like my camera so I had to zoom in
  9. I plan on socializing my bird so he won't be fearful of new people for the rest of his life. My question, how long should I wait to bring people over? A month. . .longer? Or do I wait for signs from him, such as a strong bond between us?
  10. Im sure he would, Im just curious how do I place him back in without making it a traumatic experience? I am worried he wont let me pick him up since he still growls at my hand from within the cage.
  11. Well today will be day 3 of my 5 month old grey being home. So far he has been nervous, and growls when I enter my hand into the cage to change food and water. I want him to have some cage free time, but unsure how to go about it. I think my main concern is how to place him back in the cage when play time if over without making it a bad experience?
  12. This is night two of my baby being home. He is 5 months old and still really nervous. About 20mins ago he starting going crazy in his cage, climbing all over the place jumping from one perch to another, and biting the bars like he was trying to escape. I know he is prolly just nervous since it is his second night, but it sounded like he was going to break his beak. After that, I decided to cover him for the night. Anyone experience that before?
  13. The past few months I have been doing independent research on the different parrots from cockatoos, macaws, and the greys. I have decided on a grey, and believe I have chosen wisely! I will not be getting him for a few more weeks since I still have to fine tune my care plan, purchase a cage, etc. Anyways, I'm going to start browsing around, just wanted to say HI!
