    Raw Honey?

Thanks for the responses you guys. I know it's very sweet, but it actually helps regulate blood sugar. Raw honey is also an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral substance. With humans it raises the body's blood level of protective antioxidants. Even though Tango eats a lot of raw fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds, I'm still trying to find ways to incorporate more healthy foods into his diet. I might make an apple, cinnamon, and walnut salad with a tad bit of honey once or twice a week towards the end of the day as a treat I guess. I'm not too worried about the sugar aspect because honey doesn't raise blood sugar like other sweet foods, I was just more worried about how the molecular composition of honey itself would react with an african grey.
  2. I want to say that there is only a list of 'toxic' foods for a grey; not necessarily any allergies. They don't digest grapes and the cabbage family well. My first time eating brussel sprouts I was unaware that they were apart of the cabbage family, and sure enough 30 minutes after eating, Tango puked out a bit of his food and was in a stationary position for about an hour (I assume he had stomach pains and didn't feel like moving much?). They love peppers and they don't have pain receptors towards food in their beak so they can handle spicy peppers, and definitely try to feed your grey some broccoli and other leafy greens like kale and collard greens; they need the vitamin k!

    Raw Honey?

Is raw honey safe for greys? It's extremely healthy so I'm tempted to sprinkle some honey on some of the veggies I want to feed Tango, but I want to double-check before I do. Out of all the "do not feed" lists for grey, I never came across honey as being one the foods; and I couldn't find anything regarding raw honey and greys from a quick search via google.
  4. thanks! i was just about to make a thread asking where i could go after watching your videos
  5. so glad i came across this thread.. i just recently added these into his daily regiment (his diet is very varied, there is no 'staple'), but now it's still not too late to phase this out quickly to a 'treat status'
  6. Wow thanks, because without this bump I would have never came across this; the stars aligned

    Lentils

Oh no yeah he was fine right after. He just puked out a lil bit and was back to normal. My main concern is if he can eat lentils or not, because I'm going to adapt my diet to what he can or cannot eat. What's weird is that he seemed fine before and after he puked. While we were outside, he was just hanging out in the cage. And then as soon as we came back indoors and he got on his play-stand, he puked. And like I mentioned earlier, it was about two hours after he last ate.

    Lentils

Are lentils okay to feed a Grey; and if so, are all forms of lentil acceptable? I didn't think twice about this because before I fed Tango lentils in the past and he always ate them like any other bean and never had any problems associated with eating them. However the last time he ate lentils, we went to the backyard (I put him in his small cage) for about a good two hours. As soon as we came back inside, I put him on top of his table-top play stand. He immediately started to move his head back and forward like he was choking or throwing up, and even started to shake while doing so. After about a minute, he threw up his most recent meal which was the lentils with rice and vegetables. I know for sure it wasn't the rice or vegetables because we eat that almost on a daily basis. However we don't eat lentils or go outside often at all. So do you guys think it was because of eating the lentils, or going outside in the backyard? Because we don't engage in either of those too often, so I don't know which to pinpoint it to. It would be easy to suggest that it was because of the lentils, but at the same time if it was, wouldn't have it happened 20-40 minutes after eating the lentils; and not 120 minutes later? And it's easy to dismiss that going outside would make him puke; but could there be a reason for why going in the backyard would make him puke? It was slightly windy, but I took my parakeets outside as well and they weren't throwing up; and that was their first time going outdoors. I hope it's not because of the lentils, because I just bought a huge bag and would not enjoy the fact that I have to eat them and be able to give him any. But at the same time, if it was because of the lentils, why didn't he throw up the past times he ate them?
  12. Thank you thank you guys for the warm welcome. I'm currently engaging in a winter semester at my University which is covers fifteen weeks worth of material in four, so I will try to get some pictures up in a week or so when things settle down a bit. As far as preference. At first Tango preferred me more. A few months have gone by, and I don't know if it was either me constantly talking to Tango and telling him to let my mom pet him even if it means that he wouldn't let me pet him, or if it was the fact that at around the same time I got in a relationship (current ex) and he noticed; or a combination of both. But now even though he views me as the alpha in the household, he only lets my mom pet him. I say he views me as an alpha because his tone and the majority of his spoken words are derived from my speech, and when I go to set him down, he listens to me and doesn't try to fight back. Whereas when he's on my mom's hand, he doesn't want to get down because he knows that he can take advantage of her and bite her and stay on her hand stubbornly until she gives him a treat. I've been trying to train my mom to not let him get his way, but he has her wrapped around his finger (lol at the metaphor).
  13. Hey guys, my name is Dario and I brought in a Grey to our home about three years ago as a present for my mom. She named him Tango. He hatched in November of 2008. I love forums so expect to hear a lot from me in the future.
