  1. Quinn had a rough beginning, but is now doing just fine. He spent his first three days refusing food. We had a vet appointment set for that third day and the vet gave him a vitamin and probiotic shot to get his tummy working again. I took him to the place where I got him, I knew these people would do their best, to get Quinn eating again. I did not want him to go another day without food. Fortunately he responded to the shot and his caretakers and was fine in two days and I brought him home again. He has been scarfing down his food ever since. He eats more that the Amazon who is a big eater. He seems to really like my chopped salads. He is trying things out and seems just fine. He is brave little guy and willing to check out every toy I put in his cage. He steps up very nicely for me. His wings are clipped but not real short, he can fly a little.

Now I am introducing a new animal, a Havanese dog from the shelter. He weighs about 13 lbs. I hope they get along

  2. Maybe you could find a small cottage for rent.
  3. Thanks to all for the good wishes. I am thrilled to finally have a Grey to guide me through life. I lost my last two to my husband who ended up with them, when we separated. They liked him and not me they were older and set in their ways. They made a bad choice, they went with my ex, what can I say? I have really been missing them so Quinn will be filling a big gap. I can't wait to be able to work with him. I have a gazillion toys that are too complicated for Scooter, he just wants things that have to do with food. I know it will be a while but he is adjusting rapidly, maybe not too long. Casey
  4. Quinn joined our family today. His hatch date was 3/18/2011. He has been remarkably calm cool and collected after three hours in the car and a short period at the Happy Parrot who handled this. I got him home and gave him about an hour in the cage with food and water before coming in to check on him. I ate dinner in a chair next to his cage and opened the door to the cage. Quinn came right out and started preening himself. He is willing to step up and down. He did not eat much but no other signs of serious nerves. He even fell asleep for a little while while sitting there. I think he likes me, He chose to step up and stay on my arm and wasn't doing that for the shop owner. I think we are going to be good together. Casey
  5. I know it is a bit early but I plan ahead. Scooter has been living with me for 7 years and I suspect he will be a little jealous when he realizes competition has arrived. The baby should get here this afternoon and will not occupy the same room until the vet says it is ok. In any case, I wondered if there is any good way to get two birds to accept each other and how much time would you say it should take. Normally Scooter is a pacifist but I tried getting him a little companion bird, a Cockatiel and he was pretty aggressive with her, so I did not keep her. With this bird it has to work. Anyone out there had to do this with an Amazon and a Grey? Casey
  6. This is Scooter, my sweet, funny Dbl Yellow Headed Amazon. He is just 11 and has been with me for the last 7 years. He was originally a rescue bird from Tucson.
  7. That was great, love the laughter. Now I am convinced I should hang my boing up from the ceiling and try what you did. Thanks, Casey
  8. I have an update. Apparently I misunderstood and my baby Grey is not 9 weeks he is 14 weeks. He will be here on Monday afternoon. Now i am really excited to get him. He is eating everything and playing with toys. I am not going to sleep until he gets here. Right now I have his cage in my bedroom off the living room. I thought it might be good to have him in a quiet place to start with and I have an Amazon to worry about. Do you think it will be ok to have them in the same room on opposite sides? How long do I need to wait before introducing them? I have a an appt with the vet on Thurs morning to get him started.anyone have any advice? Casey
  9. too funny, and a wild one at that. Casey
  10. My grey used to do that and I replied with a whisle I made up. Eventually she switched to my whistle and used it when ever she wanted to know where I was. I did it with my Amazon, who is louder and got the same results. Ignoring the behavior might work but the bird will try and find another way to get your attention and it might not be any better. Your reaction is negative attention and the bird will take that as it is better than no response at all. Yelling at the grey is likely to be interesting to him, most parrots are drama queens and love a dramatic response. Because they are flock animals they want to know where you, part of their flock are. Just let him know and everyone is happier. Casey
  11. A Grey I had used to work very hard at reducing those little soft wood bird houses, that Walmart sells for two bucks, to kindling. Also a cardboard a box every other day and cuts of two by fours. Casey
  12. I have email the person getting the Grey for me and told her that I don't want a bird that isn't fully feathered and wean. Hopefully I will get the bird at a later date. Casey
  13. I am going to get in touch with the intermediary and see if her information was correct. She did not seem absolutely sure about the age and we have waited another week. I will see if they can wait until 12 weeks, would you say that was enough. I have raised 3 birds, two of which were a lot younger and one was wild. I did it with no help and no equipment so I could do it. Like you said why not make them do it, I am paying for it. Thanks for your reply, Casey
  14. I can only speak from my experience. We had a Congo Grey age 10 that we were taking care of for a friend. We ended up keeping her. When she came to us I made sure she had a really healthy diet and in two weeks you could see her feathers growing back. I think she did not contiue plucking because she was in a new environment and had plenty to occupy her as well. Later when my husband and I split up the tension was high she did start to pluck again for a little while and stopped when she was moved and we separated. We always gave her carboard boxes and wood chuncks to chew on. She worked hard at this and that must have helped as well. Good luck, Casey Luria
  15. On Monday or Tuesday he will join my flock, of just one, besides myself. He will be 9 weeks so I am anxious about caring for him. I actually raised two parrots in Mexico prior to their being weaned, but had no idea of what I was doing. Now that I know the pitfalls I am more nervous. This one is weaned and eating fresh foods now, but I recall having to feed my Mexican parrots for a lot longer just less often and supplemented with fresh food. Is there an interim food that is good? Are there any special things I should know? I have a cage and am putting everything on or near the bottom of the cage. What should I have on the bottom? He won't be ready to pearch yet will he? Casey and maybe Quinn
