  1. Thanks guys I am off to get one today
  2. Can someone tell me what I can and cant use on my wood floors ? I Have kids and dogs and now a parrot and it needs to be cleaned pretty badly. I dont want to strip the shine either. Has anyone ever used one of those new push thingys with the steam ? Thanks again guys Ellen
  3. Thank you so much. I do feel that that is true I just did not want to react in the wrong way and mistreat her. We bought her a new cage ( the largest we could find a double macaw cage ) and we made the switch slowly and properly. We kept her in her new cage for 3 days after she made the switch and I seem to notice her being more secure and friendlier. My husband is the one that insists that she get out everyday at the moment but I see her acting much more insecure and aggresive. So I think slower is better. I will let her earn a little more time out with us. Right now she is just being a monster when she is out. It is so nice to be reasured about things from the experts. We boughtseveral books on Greys and asked the vet as many questions we could think of but none has helped me as much as this site. Thanks
  4. Thank you all these replies gives me hope. I was just afraid to back off that much for I thought she would be lonely. What should I look for when she is ready to trust me a little more because now she acts like she s not afraid of us at all. She is the one that persues every encounter that ends up with me bleeding lol.
  5. I just let her out of her cage and she seems all silly and happy so I decide maybe she would like a sunflowerseed ( I am trying to kiss up as usual ) and she trots across the top of the cage and seems like she wants the seed but BAM ! she bit me so hard that I have another hole that needs attention and a bandaid. Should I just stop trying ? I feel like she wont get enough attention if I stop. Once again HELP !
  6. What do I do about wood floors ? My bird is on wood floors and I am not sure if murphys oil soap will hurt or the pledge out of the squeeze bottle ? I have not used anything yet but I need to know what would be safe. Thank You Ellen
  7. I need some more help please. If you are not familiar with my prev posts than I will brief that I adopted Joei about 4 weeks ago. She was not in great health and very stressed. We have come a long way and she seems pretty happy and getting into a routine. I am soaking up as much info as possible. I adore her comical ways. Unfortunatly for me she likes my husband and seems to hate me. I am the one that wanted her and does everything. I can live with the unappreciation for I have older teens am I am used to that lol. What I am having a hard time with is that when we let her out she attacks my feet and legs and doesit to viciously that she draws blood. I have tried ignoring her thinking she would get bored. I have also tried pushing her so she would not like being off balance but that just made her even more ferocious. IUts like having my own personal mini veloser rapter AHHHH ! please help someone What do I do ? I have backed off and just give her an occasional sunflower seed to try and win her over. She just gives me this %#$& you look. I am so jealous of my husband. This is also effecting the way I need to care for her at times. The prev owner must have lied because he said she had never bit anyone and when she attacks me she says , " Bad Bird Joei " lol also the prev owner said that she never comes down off her cage and as soon as we let her out she wants straight to the floor. I have read that a bird is going to bite sometimes but should not draw blood and Joei is ripping holes into myself and even my husband at times. We really try to read the signs and dont hassle her but she is going way out of the way to bite us. I could be across the room and she has 1 thing on her mind. My husband laughs and tells her to go get her snack ( please help.

    Sick again

Not sure if this helps because I am a newbie but the heaters in the house really messed my bird up so I got a warm vaporiser and kept it on straight in her cage day and night. I got up several times a night to fill it so it would be constant and it really helped. My bird did not get to the point of not eating though so Your situation sounds much more cridical. I am sorry and hope your bird gets better. I have also read about probiotics and apple cider vinigar in the water and am doing that as so to fight off illness.
  9. Hi again. I want to tell everyone thank you so much for allthe info on this site. I am new to all this and yall have helped me so much about learning what is best for my bird ( Joei ). My question - Joei is now with us about 3 weeks and doing so well compared to when we first got her. I dont think the prev owner bathed her at all. She seems to try and wash some in her water bowl. I have tred putting a flat bowl/dish type in the bottom of her cage filled with water. She has not bathed in it though. I have done it sev times because she is such a cautious bird with everything. I have also tried spraying her lightly but I think she gets very scared cause she starts to shake alot when I do it so I dont push it because she has been so much poor thing. Can any of you experts tell me if I should just lay off from spraying ? Should I just keep puttng the flat dish at the bottom until she gets used to it ? I dont dare even try to do the shower or sink thing. She is starting to like her new home I am sooooo happy and dont want to make her scared again. Thanks Ellen
  10. I purchased a hot vaporisor from CVS and it has made all the dif in the world to my bird. It only cost $15.00 and I fill it about 3 times a day. It kills 96% of all molds and bacteria because of the heat.

    more help please

haha my dog likes it too. Thank you for all your help everyone. I am sure I will have other questions but these are the important ones right now for me.
  12. I learned the hard way about the umidifier. I wish the vet had told us that. We were told to keep her very warm about 75 or higher when we brought her home from being ill that first couple of days so we pumped up the heat and days later she started sneezing nonstop. I immediatly look up on your site and others and figured out it was her dry sinuses. She was fine in every other aspect so the vet said to see if she could fight it off and she has. I now keep the humidifier going all day and night. Her cage is in the sun but I cover the top snd back with a sheet so it will not get to hot. The windows are treated too so as not to get too hot. I also have a heated perch but she doest seem to want to get on it.

    more help please

I have tried everything and she will not touch any nuts except peanuts which I am told not to give her because of the fungus or bacteria. She will only eat what I posted and very little of that. Should I just keep giving the seeds until I know she is very healthy ? How will she get healthy eating mostly seeds ? Please look at the list posted above and tell me if she is missing anything from what I am getting her to eat. I dont think I was this stressed out when I had my own children lol
  14. Thank you for helping me. I do see her closing her eyes here and there but our dogs are always walking around so even if she catches a nap its not for too long. If we cover her at 7pm and she gets disturbed every hour or so till 1am do you think that she will get enough sleep ?
  15. We do have the old cage but we watch tv in our bedroom till about midnight. It would be about the same thing wouldnt it ?
  16. Thank you for responding. Yes we brought her into our home and two days later she looked awful so we took her to emergency room because it was the weekend and we had not yet developed a relationship with a Avian vet yet but after the emergency visit we took her the next day to Dr Tara Hadley and she said she was 15% under weight and gave her fluids and put her in an incubator for two days. She took some tests and said she had yeast and some e coli. We could not get the antibiotic in her or the niastatin without stressing her to the point where it would be harmful so the vet said since she was doing so well we could try the holistic route and build her up.
  17. Thank you for responding and no I know very little except the owner had just had a baby and moved out due to forclosure. Her cage wAS HORRIBLE and I dont think she was handled alot in recent times. Her diiet was terrible and I dont think she has ever had a bath.
  18. Another question I have is the temp in my home. We have a very large home that the temp fluctuates so much and I want to make sure this is ok. The room my bird is in has a lot of windows so when the sun is out it gets very warm in the day sometimes as hot as 80 degrees. At night it can drop to 68 even though my control is set at 70 degrees. Is this going to hurt her ? I am trying desparatly to get it more controled but it is a challange in this big home. and the heat if turned too high dries out her sinuses so I am running a warm vaporizer.
  19. Another question I have is - My bird came to us with a terrible diet of only poor quality seeds. She was 15% under weight and has shown some yeast and e coli in her tests. I am trying to get her healthy and on a diet of Harrisons pellets but I am a long way away from that so far. I have tried everything to get her to eat better and this is what the routine we seem to be on is like. I cook her scrambled egg on a stainless steel pan coated with olive oil. She will eat a good amount of that. Then I will offer her green beans several times a day. She nibbles on these and seems to like these and zuccini the best of the greens. I will give her some romain lettuce and I can get a nibble or two but thats it. I can only get her to take a taste of carrot or sweet potatoe ( not enough ) Broccoli maybe just a bite. She likes apples and this is the only fruit she will eat.The Harrisons are always available and I tried putting apple juice on them. She hated it. She seems to chew up a piece here and there but does not look like she consumes them. She of course loves seeds which I give her some with the sunflowers picked out. I only offer her this later in the day cause I am afraid she will not eat enough and because she was so sickly when we got her. If any of your suggestions are any Pasta beans oatmeal I have tried them all several times. Spouts, every kind of pepper tried it. Am I handleing this right ? Is she getting everything she needs from what she is eating from me ?
  20. I have tried posting before but some how I cant figure how to put it in the right place. I hope you all can help me. I will jump to my specific problems. I am a new parent of a rescued grey congo. One issue I am worried about is the bird getting enough sleep. She is in the room next to the kitchen and next to the tv room. She seems to love it during the day but I cant get her to go to sleep she is like a toddler peeking and yelling from her crib wanting to know what is going on. I cover her at 7:00 pm but I have teens coming in and out of the house and I tell them to keep it down but we must live in our home. Last night she was still talking covered at about 10:30pm and then was up and ready at 6:45 am when the kids are up for school. Is this ok ? Please help Ellen
  21. Hi, I just rescued a grey from awful home.My bird was 15 % under weight and has tested pos for yeast and some e coli. The vet said it was ok to try and go the holistic route. I am putting apple cider vinagar in her water and probiotics in her food when I can get her to eat it. The vet said to keep her warm and we did but that created another problem we were not aware of. It irritated her sinuses and she started to sneeze.I then got a warm vaporizer. This has helped alot.We now have her newly bought double macaw cage ( that I think she adores now ) back in the room off to the living room. She seems to love it there but I am worried that she is not getting enough sleep. If I move her she wont get the attention in the daytime that I know they need. I cover her at 7:00 pm when it gets dark but she hears everyone talking in the next room and will not go to sleep. She wakes at about 6 or 7 when everyone is getting up and wont stay a sleep. Is this ok ?

  22. I am new to being an AG mommy. We rescued this girl from a home that seemed to be preoccupied with a new baby and forcloser that made them move out of the home and leave the bird unatteded for who knows how long. I have learned alot fast. My husband and I have been reading nonstop for weeks now, We had to rush her to the vet ( emergency ) the first couple of days and then to the Avian vet after to get her pumped with fluids and such. We learned that she has some yeast and ecoli. We are trying the holistic way to get her strong again for their was no way we were getting nyastin or antibiotic in her without the stress killing her. It seemed to be going well except we pumped up the heat without knowing that they can get their little nares all dried out and effect their respiratory systems messed up . I wish the vet had told us that I noticed the constant sneezing and figured that out immediatly. We got a hot vaporizor and with days of running that and alot of prayer it has fixed her up. Ok I have caught you up to today. Here is where I need help. The previous owner said that ( Joei our bird ) never bit anyone ( LIAR LIAR LIAR ! ) I know because when she bites she says BAD GIRL Joei ! LOL. She has taken to my husband best Which ok I can live with but when I let her out of the cage she comes down off the cage ( another thing that the prev owner said she never does ) and will come running across the room and attack my legs and feet. I have tried ignoring her but sometimes she gets me thru my pants and she draws blood OW ! How do I stop this behavior ? I would love for her to like me too. Another problem I am having is that I am trying to phase out seeds and get her mostly on a Hrrison pellet diet. She is a weird bird. She is so picky and does not like any of the things birds are supose to like. This is what I am doing as of now to get her to eat better. I wake up and cook her a scrambled egg. She eats a little. I will offer her green beans. She likes those and will nibble some. I will offer her Romain lettuce and a nibble here and there. Sweet potoato a nibble here and there. She is not crazy about carrots or broccoli but a nibble maybe every other day or so. She does eat some zuccini for me. Pellets, she seems to crunch up occastionaly but does not look like she is swallowing them like when I see her eat other things. I have tried birdie bread , pasta and every other veg imaginable and she just snubs her nose at it or throws it out of her cage. I still offer her seeds but I take out all the sunflower out of it because I am afraid she isnt getting enough to eat. I am also putting apple cider vinagar in her water and probiotics on som of her food to get her healthy. She is def doing so much better than when we first got her. Today for the first time she is being so silly and walking all upside down her cage and talking to me. We bought her a very large double macaw cage and slowly let her change into it. One more question please. We have a very large home and we have her cage off in the room besides the liviing room. You can still hear the tv and people coming and going at night. We have teenagers. Can the bird get enough sleep on her own with noise in the house ? If we put her in another room she would not like the seclusion. We do cover her at dark abot 7:00pm and we all get up about 7:00am but wen we are in the next room she is like a little kid talking and peeking thru her covered cage wanting to know whats going on. Is that ok ?
