  1. I sure wish my girl would bite my wife like that. Instead she's out for serious blood whenever my wife tries to get near. I feel bad because my wife is really not a bird person but she really reaches out to my girl to try and be friends but it looks like it ain't gonna happen.
  2. As for me I give them to her raw. I'm not sure if it would be better cooked or not, I'm sure someone else will chime in and let us know. If that were the case I don't believe I could get my girl to eat them. She prefers to pull them out of her foraging cage and go at it with them like that. As with all parrots I'm sure, they just love to tear things up, and in the course of doing so tasting whatever it is first to see if it's something that's tasty or not. I guess I lucked out on the kale and hope for the same with the mustard and collard greens that I'll be trying soon. Good luck with yours.
  3. See I never knew that about the spinach. There'll be no spinach then for my girl.
  4. Well I finally found a veggie that my grey can really get into, and that's Kale. My question though is would it be possible to give her too much of this green leafy veggie, and what about some of the other greens such as spinach, mustard greens and so forth. I've been giving them to her every day and haven't noticed any ill effects yet. I plan on trying something different next week so as to give a good assortment of greens if possible. I stuff them in her foraging cage ( best bird investment so far) and she really goes after the stuff. I hope the others work as good as the kale. If there's any possibility to give too much of any leafy green, I would appreciate a heads up. Thanks
  5. Sure am glad to hear you got him back in good health and whats more is that he's eating plenty of good stuff I assume. I'm hoping to someday have my girl in that same position, eating just about everything I try and give her.
  6. It almost sounds like Phenix and my bird came from the same place. My grey is all into seeds and peanuts. I guess I should be happy that she at least likes the Zupreem pellets to some extent. I know this will probably a long road to hoe getting her to eat some of the better things for her, but as long as I can see some progress from time to time, I'll remain optimistic knowing that someday we'll get there. :-)
  7. I finally got her to eat some soft rice and some chicken. I had to keep putting it in front of her to taste it and was somewhat surprised when she kept going for it. I guess persistence is going to be the name of the game here. She is also coming around to eating Tops pellets a little at a time as it's mixed in with her other pellets and seeds. The next item will be to get her to try some fruit. So far the few fruit items I tried didn't work so I'll have to see what I can do about that.
  8. Well that's good to hear. I had a feeling that wiping her face was probably something they all did, just had to ask here to make sure. As for keeping at it, that's exactly what I intend to do no matter how long it takes. I'm up for the challenge. :-)
  9. Or should I say her beak. I can't get my CAG to eat anything soft. Well heck I really can't get her to eat hardly anything other than Zupreem pellets and her usual seeds and things. She's been with us now for about three weeks as a re home. I don't think she's ever had anything else other than a seeded diet. Everything I try and give her just won't work but especially soft mushy food. After a taste she usually goes to her perch and starts wiping her beak all along it so as to try and remove any evidence of that gross mushy stuff. Have any of you been there done that with your CAG? I'm kind of optimistic though because she has made a lot of adjustments in just three weeks, all for the better. I just would like to start getting her on some better healthy food soon.
  10. ...that my grey, Rosie, wouldn't take at all to a pellet diet seeing how she is a bit of a fussy eater and for the first few days wouldn't touch anything else but what her former owner was feeding her which was Kaytee. I'm sure it's probably a good mix but it seems there's so much sunflower seeds and other seeds that I was worried she wasn't getting a good all around diet. I went to my local bird specialty store and bought a small bag of Zupreem thinking I was just wasting money, but I'll be darned if she finally in the last few days has really taking a liking to it, and even more than the Kaytee. She has two bowls of food always there for her and she prefers the Zupreem much more. Now if only I can get her to like something with calcium and some leafy greens. I guess patience is the name of the game here. I've only had her for a week and a half and I think she's coming along really well with us. Reading about how some people don't have much luck getting their bird to change over to pellets, I'm very optimistic that she'll be a good and healthy addition to our family.
  11. Thanks for the link judygram, it was really helpful.
  12. Thanks Tamara, I can't believe how just a few days has made such a difference. Yesterday my g-daughter got her to step up and scratch her head, today it was my turn. She actually held her foot out so I could have her step up without me even having to ask her. She's also talking like there's no tomorrow, mostly words and phrases from her other owner. I'm sure there will be times when she will still want to clamp down on me, but for now I'll just enjoy the good times. Oh and good luck with your new baby also. :-)
  13. Wow what a difference a day makes along with a lot of love. My g-daughter, ignoring our warnings of "watch it, that bird bites", kept reaching out to the grey, and this morning she was able to get her to step up, scratch her head as she begged to have it done to her, and even let her nibble on my g-daughters toes. Tomorrow when everyones at school and work I'll be home with her and it will be my turn to love up to her and hope soon I'll get to do the same. Anyway here's a few pics of her. As for her name, she came with the name of Phoenix, but wife wants to change it to Rosie, so Rosie it is. She even said her new name already, and boy what a talker she is.
  14. Thanks I did in fact go to the Welcome Room right after I posted here. :-)
  15. Hello to all of you. I'm new here, new to the Grey, and new to parrots. I've loved birds all my life, and that's starting to be a long time for me. I live a little northeast of Dallas and have been recently hanging out at one of the local bird stores checking out the Greys and the Amazons, even an Eclectus. I saw my first grey back in 1983 and fell in love with them. My wife isn't much of a bird person but recently gave in to my whining and agreed to even help out some. Just yesterday I re homed a two yr old female CAG. I wish I could say it was love at first sight for both of us, but right now she wants nothing to do with my wife or myself. I suppose she's mourning the loss of her other family. I am confident though that this will not be a long period of adjustment because she is talking good and eating good, just probably feels out of place here. Anyway just thought I would stop by here and say hi. I'll post some pics when the time is right, don't want to get her more upset you know. Thomas
  16. Well I'm new here and literally new to parrots, and Greys for that matter. I just bought my first parrot, a CAG, yesterday. A two yr old female that needed to be re homed. I went to see her and she let me hold her with no problem. Got her home and the same thing. But about ten minutes later I tried again and wow did she clamp down on my finger. Now she wants nothing to do with me or my wife, and I must admit I'm somewhat afraid of her too. I tried again this morning and the same thing. I guess this is going to be some work, trying to win her love and trust for us. I'm assuming she 's missing her old family, and I'll just have to be patient for now. Any help would be appreciated. Thomas
