  1. Hi everyone, I have a male eastern rosella for sale in sarasota, fl. I am selling him at a VERY reasonable price. He is 1 1/2 yrs old and came with another pair that I purchased not too long ago for breeding purposes. I originally thought I might would like to work with him to tame him, since he is so young still, however, now that I have Maui, I am spending a tremendous amount of time with him and not so much with the Rosella, who's name is Tubok. He is a gorgeous bird and is very capable of being tamed, I've already started working on it and he seems to want to trust so badly. It's not fair to Tubok because he is caged alone, has no companion like my other two and isn't getting the attention I WANT him to get. If anyone in my area is interested, Please let me know and I will send you pictures of him.
  2. Hi everyone, I have spent an enormous amount of time with my new baby, if he's not sleeping, I'm talking to him, snuggling him, showing him new toys and playing with him or feeding him. So, If I have to leave the house to do any errands (like grocery shop for example), when I come back, it takes him about 5 or 10 minutes to "warm up" to me again. I actually think hes' ticked off at me, he'll even turn his back to me when I go to scratch his head (which he loves and will take almost always). Is this possible? Could he be throwing a little tantrum? Once he's warmed back up to me, it's all snuggles and sweet chirps.
  3. Hi, I'm brand new here to the forum. I couldn't imagine the pain I'd feel if I were to lose my little baby, and I've only had him home for a little over a week now. I'm sure the hurt seems unbareable at the moment, but I agree with all the others, if you think getting another grey will help take the focus off the tragic loss of Jimmy, then go for it. Baby greys are so full of life and so funny and silly that even if it takes 1 single moment of grief out of your day, then I'd say it was worth it. My prayers are with you and your family at this time.
  4. I just got my camera out of service yesterday, so was unable to take any pictures, but I will definitely get some tomorrow and share with you guys.
  5. Also, I have read quite a bit about how snuggly they can be as babies, but most likely won't be when they get older, bummer, hah? I so enjoy our snuggles, he's such a sweetie pie and we love him so so much! He's getting bigger, stronger, smarter and more "attatched" each and every single day.
  6. Yes, but only a few and they were from when I first got him when he was barely 5 weeks old, he has changed so much since we first got him and we've only had him for about 12 days now and he's a little over 6 weeks old. I think in a previous post somewhere I listed that he was 7 weeks, but meant to say just turned 6 weeks. So he's 6 weeks and cute as can be!!
  7. Hi Judygram, I am, thank you so much. I took Jayd's advice and started giving Maui some Skippy's all natural peanut butter with one of his feedings and he absolutely LOVES it. Of course then he smells like peanut butter afterwards but thats ok by me! =-) One of the things that I think is just oh so sweet is that the last couple of days, he has beens such a little snuggle bear!!! My husband and I put a towel down on our bed in between the two of us and let him play there sometimes during the day while we're just lounging watching T.V., he would rather be there than in his cage or his brooder since he's got our undivided attention. He is such a clown about 15-20 minutes after he's eaten and we just love to watch him play and chatter like crazy. Once he's worn himself out playing with his toys and talking to us, he walks up to either myself or my husband, climbs up on us, crawls up our chest until he reaches underneath our chin, rubs his little head all over our face, chirps sweet little chirps and then lays down and falls asleep on us. He enjoys it SO much that when we put him in his brooder, he trys to get out because he'd rather sleep with us!!! I know if we continue to allow him to nap on us we'll be creating a monster, but it is so very hard to ignore his pleas for us to get him out of his brooder to "hang" with Mommy and Daddy. What do you guys think? Should we allow him to nap on us during the day? We DO make him stay in his brooder at night time, he's not allowed to sleep in our bed with us when we're going to sleep for the night. I would be horrified if anything should happen in our sleep, like accidentally rolling over on him or something. But if we're awake and just watching T.V., do you guys think it's ok to let him nap on us?
  8. @ Jayd, How much sunlight does the bird neeed? Is it OK to bring my baby outside on the pool patio in the direct sunlight for a few minutes at a time, a couple times per day? Or is it best to find an area of the house that receives good sunlight during the day? @Pam, Congrats on your new Grey rescue, I'm so sure Merlin is MUCH happier with a calmer and quieter home, it's unfortunate that he/she had to be tossed around a bit before finding the perfect forever home, but, it's wonderful that he/she's found such a great human Mama and Daddy to take good loving care of him/her. I'm sure Merlin will bring you lots of Joy and you and your husband will bring him much happiness and security. Kudo's for rescuing such a beautiful animal.
  9. How old is Averi? Let me just say, Maui has grown leaps and bounds since we got him, he used to fit perfectly in the palm of my husbands hands, not anymore!!! My Mother came by today and couldn't believe how much he'd grown! I guess when you're with them all the time you don't see how drastic the change is, but Maui's Gramma sure did, she told him he'd better watch it or he'd have to go on a diet. (she was kidding) But, he really doesn't seem to be overeating, he eats about 45 ccs on average, I mean some feedings he'll take a little less, but only by 5 ccs or so. Is that Averi in your Picture? How sweet!!!! Aren't they just the sweetest? They sure can steal your heart!
  10. Hello everyone!! Thank you all for your comments on my new baby!!! Just an FYI, the bird has been to an Avian Expert twice since we got him and has had a full blood panel to check for not only illnesses, but to be sure he was getting all the nutrition he needs. We got Maui when he was just under 5 weeks of age, so these pictures are from the day after we got him. He is now 7 weeks, today! and weighs in at 480 g, went to see Doctor Don again today, also, he is almost fully feathered with the exception of under his wings and his backside, I'm totally amazed at how fast those feathers come in, it's almost like you can see a difference day by day. The Doc says Maui is doing GREAT and is right on target with weight, coordination and all other aspects of a growing baby grey. My camera is in for servicing (flash isn't popping up), I will get it back either tomorrow or Saturday, I will be MORE than happy to share some more recent photos with everyone if you guys would like. Jayd, I left you a PM to go into further detail about what Maui is eating, how much and how often. I appreciate your concern and would be more than happy to hear of any suggestions that you might think would be a beneficial change for my baby.
  11. WTH? I have asked the same question probably 3 different times in 3 different places with ZERO response from anyone except to carry on and on and on about how they're NOT going to carry on and on and on about having my CAG too young. My questions, STILL have not been answered and I've waited ohhhh about 3 days now. I'm really very sorry to be so "forthcoming" but, you guys are just entirely to wishy washy, you tell me to talk to Jay and then Jay says he's sorry but he can't take any responsibility of mentoring members? I'm sorry, but I'm not some teenager off the street who's decided on a whim to get a bird, this has been my life long dream, I am a grandmother now, have lots of time to spend, was looking forward to some input and conversations as to what others have or are experiencing with their babies, whats normal, whats not, etc... Please accept my sincerest apologies, as I do some other research on these awesome creatures to get my questions answered without being subject to egotistical attitudes and "feel sorry for myself" type comments because their not getting the "ego's" stroked enough. Please folks, I see some major issues within this forum that is a simple fix. NONE of you are better than any of the others, there are plenty of strategies on hand rearing and all birds are different, some work better for others while others work better for some.
  12. OK, my question really pertains to the activity level I should expect to see from Maui at this age. He seems to be much more alert in the last 3 days or so, playing with his new toys and even doing a lot of "baby talk" to me when I'm talking to him, which I think is the MOST precious thing in the world. My house is a busy house, I have 2 teen daughters, a German Shepherd, a Cat, Several other birds, to include cockatiels, lovebirds, eastern rosellas, gouldian finches and zebra finches, although the birds are on my screened in lanai area by the pool, and Maui is in the house. My house is kind of noisy, and I sometimes wonder if I should keep Maui in my bedroom simply for him to get some undisturbed rest. This is my very first CAG, so although I've had other larger breed parrots in the past, I would love to get some feedback on what my baby should be doing at this juncture in time for his age. Also, how much should Maui be sleeping throughout the course of the day, currently he takes little naps here and there, but generally no longer than 1-2 hrs at a time. My folks used to breed all kinds of different type birds and I have helped on many occassions hand feed the clutches of those birds who have had them. It's been probably 10 yrs ago since I've done this and I really wanted my breeder to continue to wean Maui, however, she felt it more important to go on vacation and get rid of Maui at 5 weeks of age to the highest bidder and to whom would pick him up ASAP so she wouldn't have to take him with her. I had been visiting Maui since he was barely 2 weeks old and found myself extremely attached to him, I've ALWAYS wanted a CAG, but my life was entirely too busy to devote the time and attention the bird would need, so decided to wait until my daughters were older and I was more settled. My girls are now 21, 18 and 16 and just don't need nor want my smotherly motherly love and attention like they got when they were younger. To sum things up, the breeder called me to let me know that I needed to pick up the bird before Friday as she was leaving town and didn't want to take him with her, and that if I didn't, she had another "buyer" who could come right that moment to get him. So, of course you know what I decided, right? YES, I brought Maui home with me, gave the breeder all but $100 of her money and told her that the bird would be going immediately to the Vet's office for a full blood panel and check up, provided all was well, I'd send her the remainder of her money. My husband is a VET TECH for a VERY reputable AVIAN EXPERT DOC, here in Sarasota, FL. So, with my experience with feeding other baby parrots, my husband being a vet tech, knowing one of the best Avian Experts in town and having NO CLUE what the "other buyer" knew about birds and knowing that the breeder would "get rid of Maui" no matter what I decided, Maui is home with me. Although I have hand fed before, I'm no expert and could really use some helpful pointers on raising a happy healthy baby. I'm very excited about my new lil boy and can't wait to develop a life long bond with him. Here are a few photo's I took of him the day after we brought him home, I'm amazed at how steady he's become on his feet already, he used to fall over when he'd try to stretch his wing and foot, now, not so much. Also, he has more feathering already too!!
  13. Just Curious, Did you name her after the fella on youtube.com's bird Tui? I think it's such a cute little name!

  14. I have a new baby, he's 5 1/2 weeks old. I've hand fed babies before, not a grey but larger parrot type birds, but, it's been several years. I was super nervous about taking baby home, but, the breeder was going out of town THAT DAY and really wanted me to take the baby right away. I prefer to spoon feed babies, I just think it's safer and healthier for the babies, maybe I'm wrong as I know there are lots of folks that syringe feed and their babies are just as healthy as can be. I agreed to pick my baby up early, provided the breeder allow me to come before one of his feedings so that I could get a "refreshers course" to be sure I remembered how and also for her to make sure SHE thought I fed him properly. All is gravy baby, just like riding a bike, I felt MUCH better about taking him home once I KNEW I would remember how to feed him properly. I wanted to start a new thread in hopes that all of you Grey Experts could give all of us some information on what our babies should be doing at what age they should be doing it at for the first 6 months or so. My new baby, Maui, is just the MOST precious lil guy ever! When I first brought him home he was pretty still and quiet for the first few days, now, he's gotten so much stronger in the last 2 days, started playing with the toys I bought him, is better able to walk, when I talk to him he tries like CRAZY to make sounds back at me, it's the cutest thing! standing up better, stretching his wings, legs, flap his wings a little AND has even tried some Millet Spray, very small (seed size) pieces of food, IE... romaine lettuce, pasta, chicken breast and banana. He's eating his formula 3X per day and eats about 35 ml each feeding, so I'm not sure if I should even be giving him little things to try or not. Also, should he be drinking water during the day between feedings? So I guess just wanted a little reassurance that he's doing well and that Mom and Dad are doing well being his surrogate Mom and Dad too!! THANKS GUYS!!!
