My grey showing me his privates through cage
DonaldLL replied to tarheelgal's topic in The GREY Lounge
I think that it is an appropriate time for me to say ROTFLMAO! I think this is an adult only thread so I won't let Stella see this.... she's just not ready yet! -
We bought a scale from http://www.oldwillknottscales.com. It arrived today; setup was easy and the anticipation was high. I have never had a Grey before or any parrot or bird for that matter. Stella weighed 397gr at her first visit to the vet on Sept 15 when she was just about 15 weeks. Today, a month later she weighs 410gr. Granted these weights were taken on 2 different scales but I'll assume they are both calibrated and even if slightly 'off' it looks like we have a growing little baby Grey

Who needs toys when you have all these parts!!!
DonaldLL replied to DonaldLL's topic in The GREY Lounge
Roseanna I bought the toy parts at http://www.cabirdnerds.com/ The first 'toy' I made... I took about 6" of the hemp cord and I strung 2 beehive beads in the center between 2 alphabet blocks on the cord with a knot tied on each end.... making a foot toy. Stella loved it. Well she loves those alphabet blocks so she just had a blast with that. For the second 'toy', I took a bamboo chew tube and put 2 unsalted roasted peanuts inside the tube. I jammed them into the tube so they wouldn't just fall out. She just tore that up in no time! The look on her face when she was tearing after those peanuts was priceless! Donald -
I bought some toy parts to make and fix some of Stella's toys. She obviously has chosen her favorite!

I am happy to report.... Stella loves the Just Veggies! Apparently she likes 'crunchy' and crunchy they are. The Just Veggies are a hit. a BIG Thank You goes out to Adina (lovethatgrey)

OK... I'll bite! I just ordered Just Veggies for Stella

what does everyone line their bird cages with?
DonaldLL replied to Codys Mom's topic in Cages & Homes
I received the 60# paper today. It is just what I was looking for. It is heavy enough, that is, it has some substance to it (no pun intended). it is a 600 foot roll and I bought the cutter as well. I cut 5 sheets tonight, put them in the cage and voilà... Good to go. -
At least a dozen times over a period of 4 or 5 years, we went to a specialty bird store here in Miami. I knew I wanted a parrot but I wasn't sure which type or when or really when I would be ready to make the commitment. We looked at many different birds over that span of time but we always walked away. This past August, once again, I asked my sig if she wanted to go visit Simbad's Birds. We hadn't paid a visit in many months. This time she gave me the eye roll and said, "nah I don't think so we have been so many times and I don't think I wanna go again". I said c'mon just take a ride and let's go look! Well she did and we did. We held this little 9 week old Grey and it just happened. As a matter of fact we held 3 Greys that day but this one was special. We 'connected' and it just seemed like this little creature should spend the rest of her life with us. We claimed her and she claimed us that same day. 3 weeks later she moved in. Stella has been with us almost 4 weeks. Didn't really go choose a Grey.

Temp variation is a no no but can I put Stella outside during the day?
DonaldLL replied to DonaldLL's topic in Health Room
OK.... well this guidelines make sense to me. I was just hoping that there was not some supersensitivity to the elements that I was not aware of. I was assuming.... but then why assume anything especially when I have the support of the members on this forum. You just can't imagine how lost I would feel having so many questions and no source of good information. Thank you all!!! -
Ask and you shall receive.... the people on this forum are the best! Thank you for the replies. So Dan (et al.) I am looking at the scales in the link you provided. Is there any reason to spend the $100+ for a 1200g capacity rather than say spending half that amount for a 2500g capacity scale? Which model do you prefer?
-
Hello, I have read several threads that say too much variation in temperature over a short period of time is not good. I thought I was doing a good thing by putting Stella outside a few hours each day. I am in S Florida so at this time it is in the mid to upper 80s during the day. When she's outside, she is in the shaded part of the patio but it is certainly mid 80s. When I bring her inside, the temp is about 75. Should I curtail this activity and just keep her in the house? Hi, I want to buy a scale so I can keep a record of Stella's weight. Can someone give a name or post a link of what scale I should buy? Thanks

Floor mat under cage... any ideas where I can find what I need??
DonaldLL replied to DonaldLL's topic in The GREY Lounge
Barb I already ordered a desk floor mat hoping the plastic will clean up nice and easy. Kim, by the way, I wanted to tell you that Babalu surely did pick out a most beautiful home. What size and brand is that? -
Floor mat under cage... any ideas where I can find what I need??
DonaldLL replied to DonaldLL's topic in The GREY Lounge
I wound up Ordering a 46"x60" designed for hard floors... No little spikes on the bottom. It should be delivered next week. Kimkim... I thought that the mat might get indented so much that it would be difficult to move. Stella's cage is half on carpet and half on tile so I figured I'd have the same problem you are speaking of with the part that is on the carpet. Right now we just have towels and bathmats down.... So I hope the desk mat is an improvement -
what does everyone line their bird cages with?
DonaldLL replied to Codys Mom's topic in Cages & Homes
After reading some other threads on this topic I decided to try 60# paper in a 24"x600' roll. Haven't tried it yet we just ordered it. -
Thanks for the replies! Jayd I never realized or even thought about this danger. Thank you for the info. Luckily the room where Stella is located (our living room) has a very large rug thrown over the tile floor. The area all around her cage is "padded". Dan I think I already notice an improvement in stella's strength and control. Perhaps it is really to soon and now I have become one of those fathers with a "gifted child". Again, thanks to all for responding Donald

Hello Everyone, My Stella is now in her new home for 3 weeks. She is 4 months old. She was clipped when we bought her. We have decided not to continue this practice. Every morning when we take her out of the cage she gets so excited and just starts flapping away. She looks so 'fired up' when she does it, it is as if she's saying "Hey look what I can do"!. A few times now she has decided to take a plunge from atop her cage and she does just that... she drops faster than a glide but not quite as hard as a rock. Can someone explain the process by which her flight feathers will grow out? I mean do the clipped ones eventuall fall out and get replaced by new feathers? Or do the new feathers 'push' the old ones out like anadult tooth pushes baby tooth? Is this molting? How much time will it take for her to have her full feathers? By the way, I have been working with her to wear her Aviator's Harness. She's had it on a few times and she get's nervous within a few minutes so I take it off... until the next time then I leave it on just a bit longer. Thanks Donald

Don't know if this is good, bad, or otherwise but I am looking at something like the 48"x72" shown here http://www.americanfloormats.com/chair-mats-hard-surfaces/ -
Hello... I was looking at office depot the other day for a desk floormat to put under the cage. The footprint of the cage is 24"x 34". I didn't see any desk mats for hard floors (all had spikes on the bottom) nor did I see anything big enough. Where can I buy such a thing? I was hoping to get something like 48"x60"... Thanks

Stella's first weigh in - 397g. Is she small, young, or both?
DonaldLL replied to DonaldLL's topic in The GREY Lounge
Hi Dave... thank you. I had seen this post and it is very informative. Don't the weights you have listed apply to full grown Grey's? With Stella being 15 weeks I thought she may still gain some weight befor she 'tops out'... I don't know... just askin' Thanks -
Stella's first weigh in - 397g. Is she small, young, or both?
DonaldLL replied to DonaldLL's topic in The GREY Lounge
Thanks Azzie... I have seen this chart. I was wondering how much more weight she might gain from 15 weeks till full grown. She's at 397gr now at 15 weeks. I haven't seen any discussions about weights at these young ages or how they equate to full grown weights. Just wondering if she'll be sml, med, or large by normal standards. Donald
