  1. Thanks Birdnut My kids wouldn't throw things at the cage or poke things inside they are all used to birds My concern was about constant noise because I feel we are a noisy family but there would be some reprieve for Rita 4 out of 5 kids go to school for 6 hours a day so its not always noisy here I don't think my children had any negative impact on our senegal except for encouraging the bite, because they really wanted to "pet" the bird and well, birds aren't dogs or cats. When Rita arrives I have told the children that they are not going to be petting her at all and that Rita would appreciate them sitting by the cage reading to her and maybe some treats out of their hands (our senegal used to love hand fed treats) so I think they know what to expect. And hopefully it will be a smooth transition for Rita
  2. What a lucky bird I love how Yoshi flies to you when you call so quick too
  3. Thank you for your opinion I am going to talk to the avian vet about it when we go I have to say I was crushed when my senegal escaped he had no band and no microchip Everytime I see a friendly senegal I am sobbing because I would never be able to confirm whether he was my bird or not so this is my reasoning behind the microchip an awful guilty feeling for loosing my loved bird and wanting to do everything to prevent being so powerless again. but I wouldn't want to do anything harmful so I'm only interested in having a microchip put in if the vet agrees and is experienced in performing the insertion and i'll have to see how it goes because I really don't want the baby traumatized but when I saw the senegal in the petstore yesterday who looked to be quite ragged and was exceptionally friendly towards me i was left with an awful helpless feeling
  4. Hi I was wanting to gather some opinions on Microchipping parrots... Is it safe? according to my African Grey book its recomended to only place a microchip if the vet is very experienced placing them in birds and if they are individually packaged (sterile) not bulk packed I'll call and ask my vet about these two things but I'm very concerned about being able to identify my bird if she is lost or stolen and prove ownership Anyones birds have microchips? are they useful? has anyone been able to be found due to their birds microchip? Thanks Crystal
  5. oh that's a shame I would look into the cost of powder coating because since the cage was free and if you are going to have to buy one to use outside you might as well spend the money fixing this one up unless it is cheaper to go with a new cage
  6. Yes her name will be Senorita but Rita for short I have five kids, so when we get an animal there is alot of "discussion" aka arguing about what to name it. So this time I introduced the photos of the bird to the kids as "Rita" like she was already named and it worked wonders I didn't want another parrot named "Ducky" like our senegal was thanks to our children So everyone is excited about Rita Thanks for asking
  7. I don't know why i didn't think of unscrewing the rings before... wow talk about a ditsy moment I went and checked in my garage and yes indeed the rings can be screwed out of the doors problem solved, now i'll go back to hunting for the perfect cage And about the bar over the crocks I know that the ez care line of cages has this for sure because our local store has a mini bowfront with those anti tip crocs
  8. I'm looking for a new cage for my baby tag coming in the next few weeks I do NOT have cages to view locally so am having to buy online i'm in canada so my selection is limited I am wondering if there are any cages without those rings that hold the dishes? my senegal used to dump the light stainless dishes out of the ring and I can only imagine a grey would do the same as a result I think those rings inside the cage are a hazard and a waste of space since I have alway had to use quick lock crocks anyway and so the dishes that came with the cage sat empty most of the time I have seen some pictures of a slide in type cup which when removed leaves no ring inside the cage, just a track in the access door--- who is the manufacturer that makes that cage? alternatively a cage with external feeders would be better any suggestions? I"m looking to spend a max of 700$ so stainless is out, as well as expandable habitat type custom cages Are there any cages without rings inside?
  9. I need some suggestions for where in the house to place the cage? We have a loud busy house with lots of kids most of the loud kid type behaviors happen in the rec room downstairs-- This is NOT where the cage will be -- When I had my beautiful senegal his cage was in the kitchen next to the computer and I really liked it there, but this new cage won't fit there and my husband was always telling me how the kitchen was the most inapropriate place for the bird cage (you know fumes and smoke from burnt food kind of things) so i'm thinking in a corner in the living room but the TV is on alot in that room and I'm not sure if our new bird wants to watch Dora the explorer all day or when my husband is home war shows. So the other alternative would be the dining room but i'm concerned about people being able to walk by without our bird being able to know they are coming our budgies are currently in that location and they freak out everytime someone walks by Is the constant tv noise a problem? (the bird will have a sleep cage in a nother room)
  10. We won't be able to visit, our new baby will have to fly here when she she comes home. I really wanted to meet her and have her "pick us out" before we bought her, but there was no one local (and by that I mean 6 hour drive one way) that has babies coming in the near future. But this breeder came very well recomended.
  11.
