Ok I am resigned to the fact that my cag is a plucker have tried everything under the sun and the avian vet says medically he is healthy. well he plucks till he bleads under his wing and then he picks at it. around and around we go vet gave me collar well I put it on him and when everything is healed it usually comes back off but right back he goes. My question does anyone else have this problem and if so do you ever take the collar off it just looks to cruel and he has a hard time with it.

I put the palm on his pellets trying to get him to eat it he is slowly lol. And no he didn't fling any in the floor this time lol. and yes I plan on freezing it tomorrow made a bunch.
-
Well I made my first chop today woohoo. I can't seem to get mojo my cag to eat veggies in chunks or any other way so I made a batch of chop he has eat the veggie noodles out of it and some of the rest I guess it is a start. I will put it in his cage daily and hope after a while he takes to it he also has the TO pellets in his cage he will eat as last resort. I am crossing my fingers he starts to like the veggies.

I feed my green cheek roudybush and he luvs it my question is though I was reading to feed it to greys you need to mix with the high energy mix they have do you guys that feed this food mix or does your grey do fine on the regular. Also my cag is a feather plucker and always has dry skin no matter what I do the vet says that as far as on her end he is healthy what about the rice food I have read sometimes they have food alergies and being thats the only thing I haven't tried just wondering would it be enough nutrition in it. I have a very picky eater loves pellets but hates veggies and fruit and I have tried it over and over he just throws it in the bottom of his cage. any help or suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

yep thats what it looks like -
Ok he has done this on a few different times. Yesterday I took his collar off so he could preen himself collar is on because he mutilates himself anyways he was all hiped up and mad because I wouldn't give him a cracker so he goes in his cage climbs on the side hold one foot up and pushes what looks to be his penis through the cage I try to ignore this behavior some times when he does it its not because he is mad so I am not sure what his deal is he is 11 years old. Is this sexual frustration or what?

will let you know how it goes yes I believe its a newer product I have never seen it and I have been using roudybush for three to four years now with my gcc. and dr fosters online has flat rate shipping so you don't get charged out the butt on shipping lol.

yea the vet said at this point she was more concerned about getting wounds healed and she said as far as blood work went she knew everything would come back off because he was in poor condition she wants to get his nutrional level back up and then run the blood work. She seems to think it has something to do with he has been on a seed diet all his life. I was just curious I want to help in everyway possible. I am gonna try the california blend because it has dried fruits and veggies which I can't seem to get him to eat anything but noodles and some apples. Plus it has the sun shine added in.

Right now I finally got mo jo eating roudy bush pellets which is what I already had my gcc on and the vet said that was a good food. She sells Harrisons but I have heard alot of people have problems getting their birds to eat it but anyways not the question. My question is roudy bush has a new california blend out that has dried fruits and veggies in it along with the pellets which have the sun shine in them which means wouldn't have to mix in food my question is has anyone tried it or anyone think its good since it has veggies and fruit in it? Also they have a rice formula that they say is for feather plucker who pluck because they have food alergies to the corn based pellets how do you know if that is why they are plucking? My vet said she thought once we got mo jo on balanced diet he might stop so was curious about this rice pellet.

He seems to be getting use to it at this point. He is learning how to get were he wants to get with it on. He is not screaming like he was doing so he has settled down a bit. He is even stretching his wings alot further than I have seen him do.
-
Well he very much doesn't like it and I have to hold his bowls for him so he can get in them unless I sit them on the floor and put him down to the floor. As far as cream working we have been using the cream everyday for about three weeks now and yes it has gotten much better but he still picks and makes it worse. So I hope with him not picking it won't take long for it to heal plus he is still doing the antibiotics twice a day.
-
So we went to the vet today she had two different types of collars the one she tried first which I assume is better and looks like it would have been less inturisive she was calling a ball looks like one that snaps around the neck but when put on the floor to see how he would react he could still reach enough to pick so had to go with satellite looking one. Have had to use that type on dogs before but this is a first for me. there is vet tape around the side that is up against his throat so plastic doesn't cut in. God I hope he heals quickly because he def doesn't like it and I can't say that I blame him. But this was the last resort. Is praying for a fast healing. Thanks to everyone who has commented.

I am not putting it on him because he is plucking its because he won't leave the sores alone long enough for them to heal up. I do put silver cream on them everyday after they are cleaned. the vet told me he may never let his feathers grow back at this point that isn't even and issue its the sores under both his wings.
-
Ok so mo jo has to go back to vet tomorrow to be fitted for avian collar has anybody else had to have these for their birds? I think this will really piss him off but his scabs can't finish healing because he keeps picking at them so the vet said it had to be done. I guess on a plus maybe some of his feathers will be able to grow in this way lol. I am really not looking forward to this.

sun shine factor is red palm oil
-
Ok so we went back to vet today for Mo Jo's one week checkup she said she was pleased with the progress sores are healing nicely and he got another vitamain shot today and he has gained 10 grams in a week. He also stepped up on my finger for the first time when we got home from the vets office. So I have one week left on the antibiotic shots and to keep cleans sores and putting silver cream on them. I also bought some of the sun shine factor to start putting on his food to help entice the pellets. I noticed she sold it last time I was there and then saw somebody on here talking about it so I asked her what she thought about giving it to him and she said that I should try it. She also sells the harrisons but I already have my other bird on roudy bush and have started mo jo on it as well so I will leave well enough alone on that. A question for anybody that uses the sun shine factor the bottle says one ml on food but thats only a drop doesn't seem to even get his attention is that right or should I use more?

well this evening mo jo has started lifting his wings looking like he is trying to fly off the top of the cage its the first time I have seen him this active and since the vet said he probably couldn't lift them up last friday because of the sores and scabs I think we are making positive progress in that department. He is also enjoying head scratches. He actually was caught tonight eating some pellets that were in the cage so I am hoping the switch wont be so hard after all considering his previous owner said he wouldn't touch pellets. So at least we had a good day today which just tickles me.
-
Well as of now haven't seen too much progress on sores wash them and put silver cream on the once a day that he just luvs yea right and still doing shots twice a day. my husband uses towel to get him out and hold him for all of this so now if anyone picks up towel he starts to growl and growls any time he sees my husband. I think he likes me more which is a good thing lol. We go back to vet friday. He spends most of his day out of the cage and will make noises ocassonally kissing noise or say something here and there I guess the more use to us he gets maybe the more vocal he will be. Tomorrow will be a week I have had him. I know I am looking at a long haul as far as him trusting us. We just take it day by day.

what does everyone line their bird cages with?
tarheelgal replied to Codys Mom's topic in Cages & Homes
I use the stuff called k cob its ground corn cob where you use like a cat litter scoop and sift through that way you pick the bad stuff out but don't have to change everything and I think it looks better than paper when they poop its kinda like litter it kinda covers it and on the greys cage he can't get to it because he has a grate the green cheeks does not but he doesn't mess with it. -
just got finished with first shot he did alot of growling and screaming but was quite as soon as put him back in his cage. It has to be quite a shock for him first new parents and now new parents doing this to him I hope he doesn't wind up hating us for it.
-
Well I took Mo Jo to vet today because he had scabs under his wings and the vet picked the scabs off showed me how to wash with mild soap once a day and put silver cream on it. She also started him on antibotics which have to be given in shot form twice a day and also gave him a vitamain shot as well. She told me the best way to switch his food and care for him. Wow alot to do since I just got the bird Tuesday. But I am up for it please cross your fingers for me. He goes back next friday to see how he is progressing and when that heals up will run blood work to see if his plucking is being caused by a skin condition. I will get pictures up soon I hope.

Hello first time cag owner from NC
tarheelgal replied to tarheelgal's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
thanks jayd I have already read both of those threads and went yesterday and bought the aloe vera juice. He got his first spray of it this morning it seemed to help some for a little while but he has started back digging the best I can describe it late afternoon. I cleaned his cage very good before it was ever bought in the house and he only had two toys in there one which was broke and I took it out everything else was scrubed down and I had already bought him some new toys when I saw he didn't have many the first time I saw him. He has fell in love with one of them already. My gcc name is cricket he was about seven when I got him. -

His name is Mo Jo he is 12 years old and think he is doing pretty well considering he was with this woman from the time he was a baby. He has let me scratch his head and plays with a ball with me. She says he has always plucked his feathers will let them get grown just about back out and start again. Well today I noticed a bug looks like a flea crawling in the feathers around his feet. Of course he won't let me get that close to him but later my hubby notices while he is plucking under wing a huge scab that he has picked open so just made call to vet got an appt for tomorrow morning. He seems to have a great personality is which why I took him I didn't care if he looked like an ugly duckling so to speak. Now we will see what the vet has to say. I hope to learn much from up here I do have a gcc as well. How soon would everyone recommend me start the process of switching food he is on a very bad diet as well. My gcc eats roudy bush pellets so I know you have to do it gradually I put some in his third bowl he has but he turned his nose up to them( not surprised by that lol). Anyways thanks for all comments. -
I just got a cag a couple of days ago from an elderly woman that was no longer able to take care of him and man do I have my hands full lol. Not complaining but a lot to learn I also have a green cheek conure. So any advice will be helpful. Thanks
