Well things have been way chaotic here, so I haven't been able to update like I should have, I've had some very sick little ratties...two of which got very sick and died, one in my arms from a seizure before we made it to the vet and the other was PTS at the vet. They were sisters and it seems it was something genetic. When it rains it pours lemme tell ya. Obi is doing really well, he's happy and hes so snuggly now, he loves to be picked up and he loves his behind the neck scritches, he acts like such a baby now, like he used to when i first got him. Even the little baby noises when I go to feed him the soft food. He's such a character, he's trying to make new sounds, one sounds like an alien spacepod landing, I have NO idea where he got it from but he's so proud of himself. I think the boy's beak is healing very well too. He's gonna be in for a recheck on Monday and I think the doctor is going to be quite happy with his progress!!! Thank you all so much for the help and the concern! It really means a LOT to me!

Well I gave him his baby food tonight and he gulped it down like the day I brought him home at 5 weeks. I think this may be the opportunity to get him out of his snarky butthead stage. Ive also made him some hardboiled egg but he doesn't seem too interested in it. Tomorrow Imma stick some well chopped up fruits in his bowl after he lets his baby food run through him. So far he's still whistling and blabbing away like his normal self, he seems to be ok so far...but of course I will continue to update this and let everyone know how he is.
-
awesome thank you! Toasted bread I didn't think of. Ive tried to give him millet seed in the past and he's never been interested in it. But I will do whatever I can, I just want him to be healthy and get better. The alternative to what has has now is having part of his beak amputated and cauterized and neither me nor the vet wants to have to do that, so he's gonna try everything else can first.
-
Alright I will try those ideas. My mom has been stomach upside down since it happened, she wants to make him all sorts of squishy foods so I told her Id see what would be ok for him to have. I know we have oatmeal and a blender so I can mix pretty much anything into smoothie consistency. Im finally calming down myself and hes in his now almost bare cage (I feel horrible but he can't have anything had to chew on) just perched and calming down. I will certainly keep everyone updated, thanks so much!

So Obi had been very excited about me opening his cage today, he immediately climbed up to his playstand and proceeded to mess around happily. Then he took his normal flying leap off of his playstand to sit with me on the bed (which Im trying to encourage), or so I thought. Instead he had taken a hop to the floor and ate hardwood. He looked a little stunned but otherwise ok. Then I went to pick him up and he started bleeding from his beak all over me! I called the vet, put some cornstarch on it and rushed him in. The vet said it was saveable, put surgical glue on his beak and cleaned him up REALLY well. Needless to say he's ok, and he's not allowed to have anything hard in his cage that he can chew on, no birdseed so he's on baby food for at least a week till he gets a follow up. Is there anything else besides the liquid diet I can feed him to keep him happy. I was in tears, and Im still freaking even though he's been fixed up. I have always put calcium supplements in his water so he's got that as well. But what else can he have thats soft and safe for him? Thanks a lot! Also! I am about to super clean his cage, sterilize it as best I can so that he's not going to have any chance for infections if I can prevent it!!!! I love him SO much and I was so scared of losing him or having him be so hurt....
-
Ah it wasn't my intention to let him on them in the first place. He hopped off of the frame of my bed which is higher up and totally ok for him to be on and got onto the sheets then wouldn't let me get near him. Im just not going to let him near the bed now I guess....I know he wanted to be near me because he did want head scratches so I was happy, but for practicalities sake....no bed at all....*sigh*
-
Ok so literally he came out of his cage to my hand, let me put him on his playstand, he jumped down next to me and is now trying to make me pay attention to him, which I am doing as he explores. He wants me to scratch his head and is making all sorts of noise. However he doesn't want me to pick him up. I want to just move him off of my clean sheets....but he's being bitey. I know not to push him but Id really like to move him.....argh!

allowing birds on your shoulder
CheshireObi replied to iraide8u's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
When Obi is in a sweeter mood and not being a butthead lol he likes to get up on my shoulder but then climbs straight up onto my head which is not ok with me, so normally when he does decide he wants to sit with me, he sits on the back of my chair or on his perch. Im not a huge fan of having him on my shoulder because he's very moody and I don't wanna be bitten badly. -
Well I haven't bothered trying to take him out when I open the cage after I try once, just to see if he wants out. He never does, however when he does wander out he does love his head scratched, but still will not step up for anything.

I have actually had other birds before, parakeets, cockatiels, lovebirds, finches and all...this is my first BIG type parrot/bird though so it's a bit different. I have really wanted one for years and years and when I finally found a baby that I connected with it was all tears until I got him and he's been my heart bird ever since, even when he is being a total butthead.
-
He's about 11 months now....almost a year...wow it's been a while LOL.

Hey thanks for those words of advice. I'll just start leaving the door open and not sticking my hand in there. If he wants to come out he will on his terms...I figured this was the answer but it just made me sad he wasn't being like he used to before the move. Im glad someone knows what Im dealing with, and can really give me some ideas and helpful tips with him. I love him so much and I just want him to be happy so thats why I wanted some ideas on why he's being the way he is.

So Obi has gotten it in his head that he can just bite and bite and its ok. When I open the door to his cage to let him out, he doesn't want to come out sometimes, so I'll offer him a step up and all he does is bite at me. When he finally does come out, he'll still bite at me from his playstand. Normally he'll take a flying leap off and come over to hang out with me though and he's perfectly fine with being picked up and handled without protest outside of his cage, but on his cage and playstand he's just a big biter. What can I do to squash him from doing this? He's out every day with me, and I know he wants to be with me, he talks and talks and loves to play and dance to music with me, but it seems he's just VERY cage aggressive. EDIT: He used to be fine with me taking him in and out of his cage, without any issues, but since I had to move home, he's started this little issue. He's now about 11months old and I've had him since he was 5 weeks, I hand fed him and bonded with him and he was such a good boy before. Now it's like he's a different bird even though I treat him the same.

Hey! My name is Mae! So I've had my baby, Obi, since he was 5 weeks old and I'm really glad to join a forum where I can ask questions and get help and share stories about my little monster! He's a bit of a butthead and I've been doing all I can to work with him but he's become a bit much to handle as he is my first grey. I love him to death and I want him to be happy so Im hoping these forums will be a huge asset!
