  1. Oh, his feathers are so much redder than my baby (Hawkins is only 4 months though). Others will let you know if they look normal. I am too new to know.
  2. I specifically asked my vet and she said no.
  3. they are sweet. I have them around too but didn't know their name. Funny about biscotti!
  4. I was very concerned about finding the right food treat for Hawkins as well. However, he seems to respond best to me saying very happily "good job". It works for me as I always have my voice when he does something I want to train and I don't always have a treat. It was odd for me to learn to train without treats as I have done a lot of animal training, including clicker. But I learned with our last pit bull who never was into food treats. What worked for him was to be petted on his chest when he got it right. So, the reinforcer has to be what they most want but doesn't have to be food. It might be a favorite toy or even time with you. Work with your bird as they are different than other animals and have a different kind of intelligence. They are still wild and what that means is that the desire to please humans hasn't been bred into them like dogs, cats, farm animals, etc.
  5. OH how exciting. It was only about a month or so ago I went and got my baby. It was such a special day. Enjoy and send pictures when you can.
  6. wow. I would have been terrified. I am really glad everyone but the rice survived.
  7. I think he just was offering to hold it for you so you could play with the new hoover while reading them. Helpful lil bird!
  8. Dr. Pepperberg also has a book out that is much more about the actual studies than her life with Alex. It is fascinating if you enjoy scholarly works as I do. It is called The Alex Studies. I learned an awful lot. I read it when I was in the amazon and also learned a lot about other studies on parrots both in the lab and in the wild and it was a perfect learning tool while I was also getting to see the parrots in their natural habitat. For example, did you know that Macaws have dialects? One group of Macaw's will have their own sounds unique to their small group but they will also speak two or three dialects of the other Macaw's in the groups near them.
  9. I think the wolf whistle might be somewhat natural to them as Hawkins does it too and I expressly forbade my family from it for fear that he might do it when we are out sometime and get me in trouble. So much for that idea.
  10. Okay. Sure, he is a CAG and I know Hawkins isn't supposed to talk for ages still. But I would swear about a week ago he said the vowel sounds of "I love you". I didn't post here because I figured it was a fluke. Then he did it again two days ago but this time had a bit better pronounciation. Still no consonants but the "you" was more clear. Then today in his afternoon practicing sounds he said about five variants of the words "love you". Some had almost an L sound and some didn't. I tried to record it but couldn't figure out my husbands recorder. It wouldn't be totally outlandish as when he calls to me, I call back "I love you" So, he may or may not be trying to say "I love you" but it sure makes me happy to think he is.
  11. I think our birds are close to the same age. Mine was born Jan. 11. He definately mouths everything. Remember, they don't use their hands to explore, they use their much more sensitive beaks and tongues. Talons are for holding things. And like a young human child, he is trying to learn about the world. Hawkins (my baby) loves to hold my finger with his beak and I have taught him just as others have said to be gentle. Then I will very lightly stroke his beak or scratch his head for him with other fingers on the same hand. Its a very sweet moment for us and we often do when I don't have time to take him out of the cage and play. I just slip my hand through the cage bars and he will lightly hold on while I pet him. In the beginning, he definately tried a few harder bites but I just told him, "gentle" each time and pulled away so he learned. These guys learn quick. In India, the oils you get will be different than we get here in the United States or in Europe. Canola might be hard to find as you mention. Personally, I would choose coconut as chemically it is more similar to red palm oil than safflower. The oils all have different types of fats in them and the birds need all of them. So maybe to be sure, you could rotate through the week. I might call my avian vet and ask her that one for you. Are you in a city? I have friends in parts of India who might be able to help me find good solutions for you. They don't know birds but they know American products and Indian products and could help us to better compare for you. edit: just reread first post. Your in Bangalore. Thats where my friends are. Excellent. I will let you know if my vet gets back to me and we can see what we can learn.
  12. And I had a parrakeet named Kitty. chicken is a great name. Just hope he doesn't start laying eggs daily!
  13. I am very happy with these forums and I am only adding here that the misspelling of "click" meant I kept thinking the author meant something about the mouse clicks and wondering if he meant we all were just clicking past his post. Ah well. Best of luck with the cage as I have no clue being rather new to birds and mine doesn't do that.
  14. If he does end up hating you, it will pass. Right now you need to get him healthy and thats the first most important thing. Of course your being loving the rest of the time so maybe he won't hate you at all, just be a big confused about things or maybe take a little longer to build trust. Your awesome for doing all this.
  15. I would take him back to the vet. It is impossible to diagnose over the internet and we don't have vets here in our group. Bacteria can come back. That is similar to us having the flu more than once.
  16. A lot of fruits won't ripen if picked too green. I am guessing that is what is happening. I think I read once that apples give off a gas that make other fruits ripen faster. I would do a search on that to confirm it and if true, maybe put them in a paper bag with an apple?
  17. Dave is right on. Remember, they are near the equator. That doesn't mean its hotter. It actually means that the day length doesn't vary much nor does the average daily temperature. So all year long they get roughly 12 hours of night and stay around 82 degrees (farenheit).
  18. Maybe he was making a comment on the type of wine? What was the vintage? Maybe he was saving you from what was, with his better sense of smell, the terrible fate of a less then perfect glass of wine?
  19. That is so awesome! He must feel so proud of himself.
  20. Happy Hatchday from a much younger cousin, Hawkins, and also myself. (not going to include my own age of course. lol)
  21. It is both. First, the candle scent is chemical based and that can be toxic. Secondly, most candle wicks have lead in them to make them stiff and not sputter. That smoke is definitely toxic. However, even smoke from pure cotton wicks can cause problems in quantity. I am not sure what a candle tart is but if the candle is a scented wax candle, it is potentially toxic.
  22. Well.... Since we tend to use initials that would be PEE?
  23. If animal control gave it to them, I am sure he had proof it was his. I just started volunteering at my local animal control and they are well aware of people who fake it in order to get a pet for free.
  24. OMG Not fair. Now I want them all.
