MrsBridenstine started following Breaking wing feathers , Up Date on baby blue quaker and baby CAG to rehome

I have a dna sexed male African Grey Parrot I need to rehome. He was born on 7-15-09 and was hand fed as a baby from a reputable breeder in my area. I have owned him since he was 4 months old. He is a very well bred boy. Behaves himself very well, great personality. Loves to talk and play with his toys. He is really just a baby yet and is still very impressionable. He has been fed Harrison's High Potency Course pellets his whole life as well as fresh veggies, fruits, crazy corn, nuts, etc. He has a very big cage that measures 36" x 28" x 60" (44" x 36" x 70" including seed guard and playtop). He loves to take showers and hang out on his perch and watch his family watch tv or play. He is used to spending about 4-6 hours outside his cage every day on the play top, as well as lots of interaction from myself and my 9 yr old daughter. So far, he has rejected my husband but that is because my husband is rarely in the home, and has never handled him before. He is scared of strangers but warms up to people once he gets used to them. When he is scared he will shake slightly and if approached by the newcomer he will try to get away, and if cornered he will bite. He has never bitten me or my daughter for no reason, only when handled incorrectly. He really is a lover. You can't give him too much attention. I would say he has a vocabulary of about 100 words right now, which I think is great for a guy this young. I can no longer keep him because our life situation has changed and I am unable to give him the attention that he needs. Re-homing fee does apply. He will come with his cage and all his toys, lights, mats, etc. We live in Sioux Falls, SD.

I have a dna sexed male Blue Quaker Parrot. His registration papers say he is a Blue/Pearl/Pallid. I need to rehome him. He was born on 5-2-09 and was hand fed as a baby from a reputable breeder in my area. I have owned him since he was 6 months old. He behaves himself very well, great personality. Loves to talk and play with his toys. He is really just a baby yet and is still very impressionable. He knows some tricks and loves to be out of his cage. He has been fed Harrison's High Potency pellets his whole life as well as fresh veggies, fruits, crazy corn, nuts, etc. He has a very big cage that measures 32" x 23" x 60" (38" x 29" x 70" including seed guard and playtop). He loves to take showers in the sink and hang out on his perch and watch his family watch tv or play. He is used to spending about 4-6 hours outside his cage every day on the play top, as well as lots of interaction from myself, husband and two children (ages 4 and 9). He has never bitten or showed any aggression towards people. He lets my 4 yr old carry him around like a baby, or he rides on his shoulder around the house. I would say he has a vocabulary of about 25-30 words right now that we can understand, many more he is working on, which I think is great for a guy this young. I can no longer keep him because our life situation has changed and I am unable to give him the attention that he needs. Re-homing fee does apply. I am willing to travel to get him to the right home. We are located in Sioux Falls, SD. He will come with his cage and all his toys, lights, mats, etc.

My year and a half old male CAG is breaking his long wing feathers. It happened a couple weeks ago for the first time, it was broken so close to his body that it had tissue and blood and it bled for awhile before I could get it stopped. Since that incident, he has broken about 4 more (in the last 2 weeks). Sometimes I hear him at night like something scares him or he is just going coo coo in his cage because he flies around and then flops down on the floor of his cage like he just saw a ghost. Nothing can be found as to what scared him or if he is just choosing to do this. He has also been ornery lately so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Some of the ones he has broken have been hollow and some filled with blood. They never break completely off they crack and break and then I have to put him in a towel and cut it off the rest of the way. When you look at him you can not tell that any are broken until he flies off his cage and lands on the ground then it pops out and can be seen. He also shakes from pain when they break. poor guy. What is going on here? Anyone have any suggestions? As far as I know he is as healthy as can be. I feed Harrison's High Potency, I cook, he gets fresh veggies and pastas, he never gets anything he shouldn't have (chips, etc.) The only thing he doesn't get that I could think of is a regular bath, he hates to be misted and he doesn't like the shower so he only gets wet about once a month unless he takes a dip in his water dish (which I only see happen about once or twice a month). Also, he doesn't get much time under his light like he did when he was younger. I used to put him under it for about 6 hours a day minimum, but now he maybe gets 10 hours a week. Sometimes a lot more, but sometimes way less. He is sort of dull gray, not bright and shiny like some of the pictures of your birds that I see. His feathers are kind of rough looking and split like they are injured. He does not pluck or destroy on himself at all. His beak is rougher looking and has white grooves in them because he rubs it on one of his perches all the time. His nails are getting long and sharp and they are growing uneven but he will not let me clip them. I think I have covered everything guys might ask for more info....let me know if I can tell you more.... Please help.....

I am wondering if any of you use Healx Sunshine Factor for your Grey or other birds? I just bought a 16 oz jar of it and am unsure of exactly how to feed it. Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks Melanie

I have bought two cages from the same seller on ebay and am EXTREMELY happy with it. It is heavy duty and works great. I wouldnt to the Buy It Now because if you wait for a 99 cent listing you can get a HUGE cage for a total of around $280 including shipping. The seller is "k1ngnyc" I got this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/Parrot-Bird-Cages-Playtop-for-African-Greys-40x30-Black_W0QQitemZ120495915443QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c0e1dc1b3 I also buy my toys and perches from another seller on ebay. The toys are awesome but are much larger that the pictures. The seller is "parrotsahoy" http://cgi.ebay.com/PFBT-Bird-Toy-Parts-Parrot-Toys-Ribbon-Wood-Twister_W0QQitemZ110413140475QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item19b522d1fb

Post edited by: MrsBridenstine, at: 2010/01/30 06:48

He behaves himself all the time on my shoulder always beaking my face and preening my hair....my concern is he likes my earings and I had to fight him the other day because he pulled it out and I thought he was going to swallow it. Also, he cant seem to get a grip on my shoulder so I have to pretty much turn into a statue. If I could walk around or even just sit "normal" and he would leave my earings alone then I wouldnt have a problem with it. : ) I have tried to have him sit on my arm when Im on the couch or on my lap but that doesnt work either.

My grey is now 6 months old and he loves me and only me. He will put up with my 8 yr old daughter but not my husband. My question is this. As soon as he steps up and has a chance he walks quickly up my arm to my shoulder. If I am on the couch and want to hold him he isnt happy on my arm or finger he always wants to be on my shoulder. Because of his desire to be on my shoulder he is always trying to get there. Now he started to try to fly from my arm to my shoulder because its faster. I have tried to keep putting him back where I had him- and then I tried putting him on or in his cage when he tried but neither seems to make a difference. Not sure if there are any tricks out there to keep them from trying to go to your shoulder all the time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Melanie

So is there a name for these tents? Where can they be purchased? How big of one do I need? Thanks so much guys for your patience with all my questions... : )
-
So this might sound like a dumb question but I got to thinking and it has been recommended to me to provide my Quaker Parrots with items so they can make a bed/nest or if you choose to buy one for them people have said that they have bought a "tent" and the birds love them....so.... My question is: Do CAG's need a bed, or nest, or tent area to sleep in? Is this normal? I just assumed they perched and were fine...do they sit on the bottom of the cage or do they prefer the upper level? Any suggestions or insight is greatly appreciated! : ) Melanie

I was wondering if any of you play a CD, Radio or TV/movie while you are away to either A) keep your bird company or B) to improve vocabulary...and if so, what do you use and does it satisfy your birds or improve their vocab?

That's nothing compared to what Cosmo wastes. I have tried feeding him smaller quantities more times a day and that does seem to make a little difference.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it. During lunch today I saw Blueberry (the origional Quaker) preening the green one and they were doing it nice. About 10 minutes later they were fighting again. And then about 20 minutes later I saw the green one preening Blueberry and Blueberry had his eyes closed and looked to be enjoying himself. I think they are starting to get used to each other.

I know some of you have Quaker Parrots as well as greys so I thought some of you might be able to give me some advise... I am a new bird owner and 2 months ago purchased a Quaker Parrot who was born in May 2009. He has been ok for us (a little nippy but we are working on it) My question is, I just got 2 more Quakers (they were needing a new home so I decided to take them in) they are both from the same batch and I think the parents might be the same as my Quakers but they are July 2009 babies. So with the similarities in age and the fact that they all came from the same breeder I was wondering about the behavior. Blueberry is my first Quaker is a sexed male. the other 2 are un-named and un-sexed. I was unprepared to take these 2 new ones in so I am still waiting on a cage. I took my time introducing them all to one another, rotated inside and outside the cage so they couldn't attach each other- once I put them on a "neutral" perch they all seemed to be getting along ok. However, Blueberry chases one of them around and they make noises at each other and they both open their beaks wide and bite their beaks- looks like they are kissing but I get the feeling that this is some form of aggression. Any suggestions on what this is and how I can help until I get the 2 new ones their own cage???

Cosmo is doing great. I took him to the vet and he said it was just his breath- something he ate. He ran some tests and everything was all good. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
