When I got sasha he was about 4 months old and was already clipped. He became fully flighted about 2 or 3 months ago(he is 17 months old now). I still have a hard time figuring out if I preferred him clipped or flighted. Flighting, he can come to me when he wants, he can get to where he wants, don't have to worry about him falling... However he can get to where he wants is also a huge con. Always getting into mischeif. He would still obviously get into mischief being clipped, but not as bad... Also have to be SUPER careful about the door to outside. I am pretty sure I prefer him flighted, but I am going on a trip in a couple months, so my parents will look after him.. pretty sure they would rather he be clipped...

how much out-of-the cage time is ok?
harmar replied to JackTheTurkishGrey's topic in The GREY Lounge
Sasha is out all the time when I am home. Heck sometimes on the weekend when I go to bed I will leave cage door open, because he will start making his morning calling noises around 8 in the morning to be let out, and often I want to sleep in.. So if I leave cage door open he will just fly over into my bedroom at about 8ish, and just sit there on my dresser quietly until I am ready to wake up.. If it was a late night can sometimes be 10:30.. so he will just sit there quietly for 2-3 hours while I am sleeping! -
oh thank you for that information. I am very glad I asked.. so now I definitely won't let him eat garlic clove again!
-
oh ok. I wont give him garlic cloves then. But if I make a pasta or a stir fry with some minced garlic probably don't have to worry about it
-
Today I was mincing some garlic for a steak marinade and sasha snatched a clove out of my hand and starting chowing down. He got in a couple bites (and ate it) but I took it away from him. He then tried getting it again. he sure had a "garlic breath".. But was just wondering if it is ok for Sasha to eat a garlic clove or not?

I bought mine from http://www.rainforestredpalmoil.com/ and mine goes liquid during the summer from the heat (although I live in Canada but do not have any AC) Rest of the year it stays in solid form sitting out.. So during summer I just store in fridge since Sasha prefers it solid instead of liquid

My TAG is now 15 months old. He lost about 1/2 of his clipped feathers about 2 weeks ago. He still has a few left, but he can now actually fly a bit. He doesn't fly on his own unless to come to me, but I give him a small launch to get him flying. At first he was breathing fairly hard after a small flight, but now he is fine. Although I have noticed that he has a bigger appetite ever since he started flying.. getting all that exercise must be making him more hungry!

I don't have a problem with Sasha sitting on my shoulder. but he isn't quite potty trained yet, so I always have to wear old shirts as he sometimes craps on them heh. However the problem I am having is Sasha keeps trying to sit on my head! I wear headphones when I am on my computer and he always tries to crawl up and sit on the band. At first I let him do it but don't want to anymore.. He stopped for a couple months, but in the last 2 weeks he has been trying again.

ya thats what I thought. There are 3 windows in my apartment. 1 in the bedroom (no room in my bedroom for the cage) 1 in the kitchen.. No room there either And 1 in the living room, which is what he is infront of. At my parents place Sasha got along with everyone, but he definitely was bonded to me. I don't have any cable or satellite so can't really leave TV on. Although I could maybe put a dvd on loop. Maybe I will have to get a radio and leave it on. Although I would think he may get annoyed with it if he tries to sleep.

Ok so I moved out of my parents house into my apartment about 1 month ago. Ever since I moved in Sasha doesn't seem to play much anymore. He never really seemed to play a whole lot in his cage, but would usually swing around from different toys and crawl around. Now he just sits on his favorite perch almost all day (atleast I think he does.. I sort of want to get a web cam and check in on him from work from time to time) At first I thought maybe it was just him getting used to my new place, but he should be used to it by now. At parents place he used to love playing on the floor. I could give him a couple toys and he would run into the corner and play with them for hours. Now he doesn't care for the floor at all. He may run around for a minute or two, but then he will come back over and wants to be picked back up. With me he will play with the toys, and has a lot of fun, specially with stuff he can rip apart. But then I will put the exact same toy he enjoyed ripping apart for the past 2 hours, into his cage, and he won't even touch it. I've tried playing with the toys while he is in the cage, but he just sits on the perch grooming himself. I am worried if maybe he is becoming depressed. In old place his cage was right infront of a big window with a gorgeous view, and he would love staring out the window... now he is still in front of a window, but the window is a little above the cage, so from inside the cage he can't really see out, and even if he could the view is kinda boring. My mom would also be around him most of the days so he atleast had someone around even if he did have to stay in cage -- although my mom usually let him out -- but now when I am gone to work he has nothing. On the weekends when I am home all day after a while he sometimes wants to go back to his cage. So one day I was busy for a couple hours around my apartment so eh went to his cage, I left door open, and he would go on his perch for a bit, then come out go up top and stare out window for a while, then go back into his cage for a bit, then come out again, etc... But he would never jump down... So I am wondering if I should leave cage door open while I am gone to work... I think he would stay in his cage and on, but not sure if I could trust him... I just don't think it a good idea. Every day I get home he just sitting in same spot, never come home to see him playing with anything, and I can tell his toys remain untouched. I just feel sad that maybe he is sad or depressed but I have no idea. When I get home he happy to see me and we hang out with eachother for a couple hours until it time for him to go to bed. I am just not sure what I should do, or if I am becoming worried about nothing at all.

very interesting responses. I bought a branch at the parrot place and Sasha was freaked out by it to. Which ended up being ok because it was too big for his cage anyways. I went back to parrot store, bought a smaller one. that looks exactly the same . Introduced it to Sasha, he didn't seem to mind, so put it in his cage, and it is now his favorite perch... I don't get it heh.

I don't know his wings were clipped pretty severely. If by a "slight wind" you mean a heavy wind, I would probably agree with you and I wouldn't take him outside. I don't take him out anyways if there is any wind at all. But there wasn't any wind. And I don't mean flutter slowly to the ground, he still falls pretty fast, and will land a bit hard, but not like a rock a couple months ago. When he jumped off my finger there was ZERO upwards movement. He made a distance of maybe 3 feet before he was on the ground. If he could have "easily" flown away he for sure would have yesterday. But I do thank you for the advice, I am being cautious and I definitely won't be able to take him outdoors freely anymore when he starts growing back in his flight feathers..

oh another thing that kinda freaks sasha out, not so much terrifying him, is when I BBQ. His window is in line of sight of my BBQ and when he starts seeing all the smoke come out of it he starts whistling and pacing like crazy. Maybe trying to warn me of a fire?
-
Let me preface this by saying Sasha's wings were severely clipped by the breeder, at first if he tried jumping down from something he almost droped like a rock, now he can actually sort of flutter down a bit more safely. So there is NO way he could fly away, also my backyard is totally fenced in) Anyways, I was out in the backyard chilling with Sasha yesterday. He was sitting on my hand, when all of a sudden he jumped off and started running away. When he is scared of something he will try jumping and flapping his wings which he can maybe jump a couple feet. Anyways he ran to the other side of the yard huddled into a corner and started shaking like crazy. I put out my finger tell him to step up. he did but second he did he jumped down again huddled into the corner. I looked around trying to figure out what freaked him out so much. I looked in the sky and saw an airplane that was fairly low to the ground. The second the plane was out of view Sasha was back to normal. Ive never seen him so terrified. I knew he was a bit scared of bigger birds, especially crows. It weird though, Sasha is also fascinated by planes that are VERY high (that you can barely see) and that leave smoke trails. He will sit there and stare at the smoke trails until they disappear.

mine kinda does this to. If it something he doesn't care too much about he will take a bite and let it drop. If it is a favourite treat he will hold onto it to not waste a bite!
-
thanks a ton for the link! Been trying to figure out where to buy them in Canada. Do you recommend getting the small or large ones ? Wonder how many I should get....
-
mine does this to, it just means he wants through the door. A lot of times I shut my doors to different rooms and when he feels like being an explorer he will go up to the door and put his beak in the corner and start scratchin. I'll open the door for him he goes in looks around for a couple minutes then comes back.. Sometimes he will then go up to another door and so same thing

Parrot loves to walk on the floor? is this common?
harmar replied to dmkrieg's topic in The GREY Lounge
Sasha loves the floor to. When I am in the kitchen making supper I will let him play on the floor (I make sure to always look before I start moving) He loves when I throw stuff close to him (like a plastic spoon) he will jump at it and attack it so funny. He loves playing underneith things tho, if I have dishwasher down, he likes hiding underneith that, otherwise he will go into a corner. At first he was scared of the outdoor cats that peer through the glass door in the kitchen, but now that he realizes cats can't get to him, he will intentionally walk right up to the door and taunt the cats. The cats get mad cause they see dinner running around right on the other side of the door, but they cant get it. If I have to leave the kitchen for a minute he will usually follow me from room to room. -
We have our house set at 67 and Sasha is perfectly fine. Our bathroom is VERY cold in the morning (50) and Sasha is definitely cold in that, as he shivers... So I try to warm it up to 60 before I take him in. I find sasha is cold anything below 58 or so, and fine with anything above 60-62.

Merry Christmas everyone! Anyways, I got a new grill for christmas.. it is a Cuisinart Griddler Combo (http://www.cuisinart.com/products/grills/gr-55.html) I tried searching to see if it contains Teflon but couldn't find any info. My Mom said she called Cuisinart and they said it doesn't contain PTFE, but for all I know it could be some kid that just got hired there, stating that... Was wondering if anyone else would know if this grill would be OK

Hi, Sasha was weened with Kaytee Exact Rainbow pellets. He likes them quite a bit. I tried switching to to Harrisons, he tried chewing on it a bit, but after a while gave up, and now he wouldnt touch it. I got some zupreem wild and spicy. again he tried chewing on it a bit, but after a while gave up, and now wont touch it.. Also go some pretty bird natural gold, he really likes that.. Today I had an idea, and soaked the Harrisons and Zupreem in water for 15 seconds, gave it to it, and Sasha ate it fine with no complaints. I wonder if maybe the other ones are a bit too hard for Sasha They are also pretty big chunks so cut the harrisons into quarters, and the zupreem into halves (sasha only 5 months old) I just dont think it would be a good idea to soak the pellets in water and put it in its food dish to sit all day, would get really mushy. What are your thoughts? Or should I just continue on with the rainbow exact, and natural gold?

basically whatever I happen to be eating at the time will be Sashas favorite food! But I would say his favorite food is pomegranate seeds, apple, and peas (but only the inside of the pea (im not talking about the pod.. but apparently the pea itself has an outershell, and the inside is a very green sweet round seed type thing.. who would have known? hah) Sasha also loves oily/juicy stuff, I dont think so much for the taste but because he tries to clean his beak by rubbing the oily stuff everywhere!
-
ya I just got some palm oil for the first time last thursday. I put it in hot water to make it the oil, I then tried spreading it on toast.. nope, putting it on pellets... nope, pet it on bread.. nope... Gave it to Sasha in hardened form, and he loves it. I think he would eat it non stop... I tried again with the oil on stuff, and wouldn't touch it, will only eat it hard... Oh well works for me and is a lot easier!... atleast until next summer when it will probably always be in oil form...<br><br>Post edited by: harmar, at: 2009/12/09 18:22

Sasha wags its tail very often... couple times an hour. Does it very quickly for about 1/2 a second. I find Sasha does it when he settles into a position (i.e first gets on a perch, or my shoulder, etC), or aftering fluffing feathers, and after a bath. Sometimes I see sasha extend its left wing out fully, stands on 1 leg, and put its leg stretched out under its extended wing to its back.. does it for a couple seconds... not sure what it means, but I think Sasha is just stretching. doesn't do it too often, couple times a day.<br><br>Post edited by: harmar, at: 2009/11/23 23:45

I went to his site a while ago when I was researching african greys. He offered some free sample videos.. but they required you to sign up to his site. I did, and now am bombarded with emails. EVERY single email he is trying to sell products. From reading his articles, I can tell he doesn't care at all about his birds, he just wants to make money off of his products.
