  1. Not really wanting them as PETS, per se...just need to be able to clean cages and things without a lot of hoopala...I just now got a very nice bite....
  2. Hello! My name is Andy, and I'm the proud new owner of two African Greys (Timneh): Cheech and Fluffles. I joined this forum a while ago, but never really participated, just read some posts. I am not new to birds, or even the parrot family, but I am new to TAG's. I bought these two with the hope of breeding, and was told they were both proven, but with different bond mates, and that they are now very bonded to each other. I have a next box in the cage, and the female is shredding away, so I hope that is a good sign. My problem, so far, is a distinct lack of co-operation. They TAG's aren't at all skiddish, except if you ask them to step up...then they will fly off to other parts of the house. While I can towel them to return to cage after my cleaning chores are done....well, I'd obviously prefer to have some help on their behalf...any suggestions??
  3. This site has been truly great in so many ways in terms of real experienced information, thanks so much! I'm not at all worried about the time consuming aspect, because that is actually something I really need. I do have 2 small children (3 and 7), but they don't live with me full time, and frankly I MISS taking care of them...so the Grey is going to be spoiled...for sure! By the way, has anyone here talked about organizing the recipes in Bird Food into some kind of cookbook? Seriously, I think that would be a really great idea!
  4. So, just browsing through the "Bird Food" forum and have seen a lot of terrific ideas and recipes for Greys. I eat a lot of fish, myself. Haven't seen anything about fish here. I eat a lot of tuna (chunk canned in water usually). Also, I love salmon. Is fish okay for greys? Can they do raw fish (like the salmon)? How about fresh water fish like perch and walleye (cooked)? Before I even put down the deposit on my new fine feathered friend, I really want to KNOW how to take care of him, so I just want to say thanks for this forum right now!
  5. Wow, yeah, looks like $25 at www.avianbiotech.com That's GREAT! Thanks Judygram!
  6. Out of curiosity, how much does DNA testing usually cost (in the US that is...)? One of the babies I'm interested in hasn't been tested, and thinking I might want to do that up front, so I don't have to name it something universal. Sounds trivial, I know, but I am that guy sometimes...hehe. I had a Cockatiel growing up named Rooster that started laying eggs...so yeah.
  7. You guys DO realize that it almost seems like Greys are too much work from some of the posts on this site, right?!? I loved the essay on the personality of a Grey in the first few years...classic! I've known people with Greys, though, and know that if you can give them time and attention, they are the best!
  8. Frankly, unless I'm asleep or not home the bird will never be in a cage. If I could teach him/her to answer the phone I'd be set...hahaha.<br><br>Post edited by: terminalxs, at: 2009/09/03 05:08
  9. I'm definitely excited. I hope to be able to add a Grey to my family around or after the Holidays. I've found a good local vet already that specializes in Aviary care, and I have a couple of breeders locally that hand raises TAG's, so that gives me options right there too. I work from home, so I absolutely have plenty of time for a Grey, and actually have no other pets and don't plan on having anything else...so he's going to be my one and only!
  10. Hello! Okay, so I've recently decided to get an African Grey (Timneh). I haven't put down the deposit yet, or anything like that. I'm first investigating all the "hidden" costs like vet fees, weekly food bill, etc. Also, I'm searching for a nice used cage, and have gotten some great ideas on this forum for making a PVC playgym. I've owned cockatiels before, but this is my first large parrot. I'd like some recommendations for a reading list...books, dvd's, whatever. Also, I am not used to this site, so a direction to new parrot posts would be great, I'm having trouble finding anything! Thanks
