1. This is the pet store I always go to. So I know these birds. The missing baby was still being bottle feed. Hope wherever it is, it is doing ok. What a loser to disrupt the life of this kind of bird. The little Timneh seems to be doing alright, I went to see him. I really wish I had the cash to buy him. He is $1199.
2. Here is the news article from a local pet store. This occered one week ago. July 25 09. One bird is still missing. Two of three parrots stolen from Petland in Lewisville Friday night were found and returned to the store Tuesday. Bill Milam, manager of the store located on East FM 3040, said a man was videotaped removing the parrots after the store had closed. He said a second person may also have been involved in the thefts. He said the two parrots which were recovered Tuesday morning were Cuddles, an 8-month-old African Grey and Coco, a 3-month-old Congo Grey. Happy, a 4-month-old Congo Grey, was still missing late Tuesday. Milam said the total combined value of the three parrots is $4,800. Capt. Kevin Deaver of the Lewisville Police Department said police are investigating the incident. Milam said he believes the thief on camera may be a former employee of the store. He said he believes the suspect may have dropped off Cuddles and Coco after learning by watching television that the theft had been videotaped. The two birds were apparently dropped off at the residence of a woman who was not at home. Milam said a Flower Mound police officer, who lives next door, heard squawking in some bushes and went to investigate. He expected to find doves, but instead found the two young parrots. The parrots were returned to the store. Milam said they were taken to a veterinarian for a checkup, but appeared to be in good condition other than that they were stressed and dehydrated. Jessica Staton, who works for the microchip registry for birds, said anyone with information about where the missing bird might be should call HelpmefindMYPET at 866-699-3463. She said the suspect broke in to the store while it was closed by prying the back door open. The parrots appear to have been a particular target, as nothing else was taken. Staton said the man also came prepared with a large plastic container that he can be seen carrying in the surveillance footage.

Post edited by: HollysFlock, at: 2009/08/01 18:39
3. The PVC you find in most hardware stores is designed for use as drain piping, not fresh water. Most available PVC is not to be used for human water consumption. The irrigation system in your yard might also have this type of "toxic" pvc. Most of the fresh water piping in the home will be copper or PEX (which is a type of plastic piping in new homes). There are some special pvc that is rated for fresh water supply but it is not easy for the average consumer to tell the difference. And most of this type is not a suitable building material. With that being said the real danger is in the burning or cutting of this pvc. Also, water will leach the harmful chemicals which is why it is not used for fresh water supply. Do not burn or cut with torch. Wear a HEPA mask when cutting. Some studies are showing that pressure like that exerted by chewing by infants on teething toys will release the harmful chemicals. Some teething rings were recalled. I will use some pvc to make a stand but only for the support pole and connectors. All of the perch areas will be natural wood.
4. Thank you for the welocme. She has been keeping us entertained. We never know day by day whether she is in the mood for people time. Although she does call us for her dinner. We get all kinds of sounds, meow, woof, Hello Hellllooo etc, We even heard her bad kitty meow - that was sooo funny. The stand is made from the pecan tree that grows in our front yard. It has to be trimmed every year usually twice a year to keep the city happy. I used the zip ties to hold it in place so I could nail or screw the pieces in place. The ladder had to be (Holly tested) adjusted for her. She does not chew a lot and is not really a toy destroyer and is happy just to sit on it and observe us. Mostly she only chews leather and paper they get a real nawing. I am making a foraging tree from a large branch I had to remove from over the driveway. It has many branches and I am removing the bark from it. I will post so pictures of it soon. Thanks again for the welcoming.
5. We just got Holly (female Timneh) a few days ago and are so happy to have her. She needed a new home and comes to us at the young age of 11 years old. I have read a lot of the post here and everything else I can find about greys. I have wanted one for soooo long. And then she came along. I was raised on a farm so raising non humans was a way of life. My family at one time raise Bob white quail and I hope to teach Holly their distinctive call. We have had several Cockatiels both named George. They are no longer with us but were great birds. Holly had 2 familys before us so she has many voices to share. Today was her third day here and wow she really came out. We got quite a show from her at bedtime. She did not want to be covered tonight and insisted on talk to us. Was also the first time she did not sleep on the highest perch but instead roosted on the perch closest to the couch where we were sitting. We hope that is a sign of her accepting us as her new flock. We can already tell how smart she is. She is already telling us what she wants and makes the cutest sounds when I take her food dish to fill it. I made her a tree perch from some pecan branches I had cut earlier this year. She took right to it as you can see. Thank you to everyone for posting tips and information that helped us decide to take this challenge and commitment. I just made the profile tonight and have posted information on the SugerGlider thread as I once raised them and hedgehogs. We hope to have many year to enjoy Holly and are considering adding to the flock already. Our kids love her and hearing all her voices and sounds.
6. Back in the early 90s I raised/breed sugergliders. I can tell you that Babi is a wild caught most likely because of her color. Big mama was raised domestically probably in the US. The brown color of Babi comes from thier natural diet in the wild. Also the reason she is shy is probably due to the wild caught. They can be one of the loudest little creatures I have ever known. Hand tame babies are so adorable. They will hide in the collar of a polo type shirt and stay their for extended periods. They love most fruits in the wild they will eat leaves and branches from eucalyptus trees. You will not want to get bitten by those rodent like powerfull teeth. They also have a strong musk scent and glands. Not as bad as a skunk but a strong scent. The wild caught will be the most noticable not so much with domestic raised. I would be happy to answer any other questions you might have about them.
