Thank you, here's a copy of our orignal post 2009: And Here's Fred.......Our new rescue. Hello, let me introduce myself. I am Fred, a 17 year old Cacatoa Galerita (Greater Sulfur Crested 'Too). I've kinda had a rough life. My first owners locked me in a closet because they said I was too loud. I wasn't loud, I was just happy with life! My last owners kept me in my cage with no toys. He liked me but his better half didn't...so I ended up at Feathered Friends. He would come to see me for a few minutes and then leave for a long time and that made me very unhappy. Carol told him that he needed to take me home or let Carol place me with Jay and Maggie. So, okay, yesterday, I went home with Jay and Maggie. No more rescue, I've got a home now! I can tell already. They gave me a piece of fruit last night (Pear) and it was SO GOOD! I can't remember when I have had such good food, fruit and veggies! Wow!!!! They said I can't have too much fruit because of my plucking. Plucking: I don't have many feathers. Closet Time does that to you! They spray me with this aloe stuff and it sure feels good! I didn't pluck all night and all day. I heard talk but if I could, I would tell them that I will grow back as good as new because I am happy here! (From Jay and Maggie: Fred's wings are basically skin and bones with a few feathers. His chest, legs and back are basically plucked. He has a beautiful full tail, head and top-notch.) I like to dance, I can really shake it and I like that they play music. They leave my cage open so I can come and go and I get along well with the others. They tell me things are good there. You ought to see Spock and I eat our morning and night smash at the same time out of the same spoon. We don't mind sharing...there's plenty...I'm really good at bathing and I don't mind Jay holding the food while I nibble...I'm not a one-person bird...Maggie sings to me and I dance for her. I really think I'm going to like it here. I can't remember if I can talk or not, I say "Fred" but that is all right now. I am very quiet and today I started dozing with one leg tucked and my top-notch down....OH BOY!!! got to go...snacks are on the way!!!!! Fred

This isn't unusual, this is how they feed........cute....You might want to get him a low-iron organic baby food, [sweet potatos, apple sauce, pears etc.] warm it [above 103%,no higher than 107%] and feed him with a spoon. Some Greys require hand feeding up to a year old.....

Talons 2.5 acidic water is wonderful, vinegar works the same, both acidic.....Use "Organic Apple cider vinegar" for their veggie cleaning and drinking water, 2 drops per bowl... Thanks

Please don't use "Method". some of the ingredients: e.g., alkyl polyglucoside, starch One of the preservatives we use frequently is a blend of methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone.

Use Vinegar, it's completely safe, non-toxic, can be used while bird is in cage or house. It totally disinfects!!!! Soak there veggies in it, clean there bowls, add to drinking water. For deep cleaning, fill a spray bottle with vinegar, and one with peroxide, Spray area with one than the other, and wipe.....

The aftermath of wing clipping... to re-clip or not...
Jayd replied to JDS5607's topic in The GREY Lounge
What Kimkim states is very good...what we do is very similar. After he steps up, sit on the floor or in the middle of your bed, put your thumb across his overhanging toes on your first finger firmly. Raise your hand just a little a first, drop it down saying "Wheee" or "Flyyy" whatever you want like Kimkim said. If at first he doesn't lift his wings and try to flap, put your free hand under the front part of his wing, slightly rubbing it as you go along and gently lift his wing as you lower him. The reason for doing this without moving and walking is so that their concentration is only on the exercise, not "Oh Boy! Where are we going?" Once again,Kimkim is correct....Big Thanks! -
The aftermath of wing clipping... to re-clip or not...
Jayd replied to JDS5607's topic in The GREY Lounge
No more clipping, Joeys wings were clipped before he ever learned to fly,[past owner] after over 4 years, he can now land on my shoulder. Tango never learned to fly after being kept in a cage for 8 years,[past owner] she made her first flight of 8 feet 2 days ago......Your baby's young...Please keep blankets on the floor where Sully lands..... -
Here's a wonderful article on the areas where the different shades of [imported]Grey's come from in Africa. Since almost all Grey's are "captive bred now, more variables are introduced...Judy's "Spot on"......Your TOO, could change as time goes on and she starts welcoming life after she settles in.. http://www.africangreys.com/articles/other/variations.htm

We should have mentioned this information in Joey's update...For those of you who don't know about our arrangements, we live in our fids' 12x56 foot mobile home. It is divided into (from the front) a kitchen, living room, small bird room, breeding room, bath and our bedroom. Spock, Joey, Salsa and Tango's cages are in the living room along with a couch for us. From the moment of introduction, they are all aware of each other. All training, interaction, feeding, playing takes place where they all can see what is going on and are fully aware of any and all interaction we have with all of them. Example: in the morning and whenever we come home, we give a big hello as we enter their home. Joey, being the elder, is greeted first. Jay faces his cage from about a foot and gives a purring sound and bows and Joey will respond in turn, holding the bow as long as Jay does. His cage is opened and he is loved and petted. Then on to Spock...we open the cage he perches on Jay's finger and shoulder, talking and giving Jay a kiss. He then lets a huge bomb over the trash and then flies over to Maggie and perches on her head as a permanent fixture. Salsa is next...she says Hello, gives him a kiss and then takes his glasses off while attempting to steal whatever he has in his pocket. Last but not least, there is Tango who puts her head down next to the cage so she can get a scritch. She then climbs to her outside perch where she receives a healthy head and wing scritch. When they go to bed, the procedure goes in the same order reversed. Then it is on to the small bird room to chitchat and give treats to all the little ones. Back to the big birds...Any training, interactions, treat-giving, playing etc is given in full view of all the big birds. During periods of training, the birds that are not being trained, are quiet and watch what is going on. So, basically, all the birds get the same training at the same time to a greater or lesser extent. They can distinguish what actions and words are directed to who. Their hangout spots....Joey on his outside perch or on his $5oo perch in the kitchen (our laptop computer), Spock's is about 15" away from Joey on the kitchen chair, on top of the freezer, on top of the fridge, in front of the microwave, on the atom between the kitchen and the living room, on the curtain rod over the couch, on Joey's cage, in Joey's cage, on the bathroom door, on the bedroom door, on the indian blanket in the bedroom, on the shower rod or on the bed, nosing around, your head if you are on the commode or trying to brush your hair/teeth. Salsa hangs out on the top of Spock's cage, the atom, inside Joey's cage, inside Tango's cage when Tango isn't looking and Spock's favorite places in the bathroom and bedroom. Tango is content to stay in and on her cage and on and in Salsa's cage (when she chases Salsa off of it). She also likes to spend about 1/2 an hour prancing on the bed besides the attention and the carrying around we give her. So, in summary, every bird knows every bird's business...they are each and all aware of what goes on at all times, be it correcting, feeding, training, playing and receiving personal attention. As a side note: when we first brought Joey home, Spock flew over to him within 8-10" squatted down and bent his head, making a couple of Grey sounds. Joey, in turn, stood up straight, looked at him and made similar sounds back to him. Then, Spock flew away. It would be very interesting to know what transpired...was Spock showing respect for his elder? P.S. They all speak better human than we speak bird....
