Mama, no one can ask anyone to do any more than you have. Don't give up on Cricket, keep talking to her mom. Tell her mom to try a little plain yogurt, Try a dad of peanut butter on the end of a spoon! Let me know what Jackson's crop looks like before his last formula feeding. Luv Jayd and Maggie

Thanks Mama, Your doing all you can, do you know why cricket fell? Try to get your friend to take Cricket to the vet. Don't worry that cricket is smaller then Jackson, Grey's come in all sizes! Try some papaya like Cheyenness, Do what your doing. Jackson's fine, I noticed his crop was full, Do me a favor, tomorrow, after you feed him, see how long it takes for his crop to empty? His biting should stop as he gets older, when birds play with each other, they get a beak full of feathers, we don't have feathers, so it hurts.lol Tell Crickets mom to pad the bottom of the cage, put newspaper over the towel, change the paper when it gets dirty! Luv Jayd
  3. TIDBIT!!! Among the first animals Christopher Columbus came across in the New World were Amazon parrots. Columbus brought back Cuban parrots to Europe from his first voyage to the New World. Dr. Dari Russ published several books in the 1870's and 1880 's about popular birds as house pets. He gave the name "Amazon Parrot" to the birds known as "green parrots" or "short-winged parrots." Traders and sailors called them "Kriken". This comes from the French word "criquer", which means to screech. Although Amazons became pets, Indians hunted a far greater number for food. They served these birds with broth and rice. Those that survived capture and the long sea voyage, went to trainers in European port cities. These trainers were generally innkeepers in sailor bars, barbers or former sailors. The birds picked up repulsive ands such as spitting, snoring, hacking coughs and a good vocabulary of swear words. The new owners found that these sounds and words were almost impossible to remove from the birds' repertoire. Jayd http://www.upatsix.com/faq/amazon.htm
  4. "Amazon's of the Week", boy I learned a lot, I hope you all did to. We've been from a to z and then some, we even covered extinct and sub speice. So, What is a good description of a Amazon? Well, he's not a Grey, not a parakeet, but something in between. He has a large vocabulary like a Grey's, very smart like a Grey, self entertaining like a Keet, low maintenance like a keet, a mind of his own, like both! And he's a great companion. Okay, he has Color, lot's and lot's of color, Amazon's are very special bird, there like a trip to the beach, or a ride at a amusement park, each on is a individual, take your pick, you'll be happy if you do!!!! Thanks All Jayd Enjoy:

  16. Quote: "Amazons do tend to have more problems with cholesterol then some other species. How much exercise does he get? This is of vital importance to your bird’s health! Daily exercise, even if only flapping its wings is often overlooked for our caged pets. If you have him on a pellet, I personally would take him off pelleted food and get him on a raw fruit, vegetable, sprouts and grain diet. Foods such as brussels sprouts, spinach, apples, pears, Green plantain, grapefruit, oranges, carrots and prunes can all help lower cholesterol as can some grains such as Barley, Oats and Pearled Barley; as it contains a substance that inhibits the production of cholesterol in the blood has been traced to the non-fibrous part of the grain. Flax seed in moderation is a good EFA that has been known to help lower cholesterol levels Cinnamon also reduces cholesterol levels. Periods of exposure to sunshine will convert the cholesterol to Vit D. There should be no need for drugs for you amazon to lower its cholesterol levels until you have changed his diet and started him on an exercise program and some time in the sun daily. If after all these changes your parrot still does not have lower values and his life is at risk then by all means go the drug route. However, Nature’s ways are usually best in the long run." unquote. 19. Quote from your web site!!!!! Avian Holistic Health Consultant Alicia McWatters recommends the following general guideline: vegetables 30%; legumes 20%; pellets 20%; seeds/nuts 15%; fruits 10%; and grains 5%. The FACT is that the avian nutrition field is too new and NO ONE knows all the answers, so please look at it conservatively. Hbalkhi, on this forum, we have hundreds of thread and post of what "Real" people are feeding there gray's, and posts and threads of what not to feed. Here's a good and simple example: Water, Pellets, some seeds, fresh veggies, a little fresh fruit.. Treat's: Nuts[walnuts, almonds, roasted no shell peanuts. Extras: white chicken/turkey meat, pasta, oatmeal, tuna in water, wheat bread, palm nuts etc! Start a basic diet, then if you want to feed the baby something your not sure of , ask! I promises some one will answer. Jayd
  20. I'm really glad, I know you'll keep close watch, I'd rather be a fool and worry, then to lose another bird! Take care!! Jayd
  21. All the reply's are grey't. Seed's: Seed's have a lot of nutritional value, they are just not complete in all the bird needs. Fruit: A Grey should have very little fruit, fruit is mostly sugar and water, in turn it makes their metabolism higher, causing them to burn more energy and not absorb all they need. Fruit makes there poop watery. Feed your veggies in the afternoon, along with some seeds, even a 1/2 tsp of sunflower seeds are great. Limit fruits to every other day or so, look at the size of a grape, or 2, plus a few raspberries, look at the size of your Greys head! add a slice of apple and orange to that, all sugar and water,. The number one veggie is Dark green leafy veg's, number 2 is Carrots, lightly cooked or steamed. Example: Walnuts, A human is suppose to have only 3 whole walnuts a day, compare the size of 3 walnuts to the size of a average human, now compare a piece of walnut to the size of a Grey? Thanks Jayd
