  1. Ah, cool. Thanks! I will search for some Palm nuts then Thanks!
  2. Thanks for the replies! When I first heard about red palm oil a few years ago, I ordered a jar of it and it was almost a solid until melted. That stuff lasted forever! Then I saw the red oil - but I didn't know enough about the actual fruit/nut to know what it's most natural form is supposed to be. I am going to order some of the Tropical Traditions brand and toss out the liquidy stuff. Thanks, Paulie. I'll pick up some pine nuts, too. I'd love to travel there and see a bunch of these cuties in the wild. I can only imagine the different sounds and the shenanigans! Cute little clowns!
  3. Thanks, Judy. I've wondered if anything were added or taken away to create that constant liquid form. I looked at Swanson's but I want to order something USDA certified Organic, something like this: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/red_palm_oil.htm I found this on Harrison's website, talking about cheaper oils.... http://www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/products/aboutpalmoil.html Hmmm. I wonder if being diluted with palm kernel oil would make it in a liquid state all the time.
  4. Hey guys, sorry about another red palm oil question, but I did some searching around and could not find anything to address this question. A few months ago at a bird expo, a local guy (no website) was selling jars of red palm oil - but it was completely liquid at room temperature. A very bright, rich, red liquid. It looks just like melted/heated red palm oil that I've used in the past. A jar I bought in the past had it as a solid form, until heat was applied, to liquefy it. Also, the Sunshine Factor and Avi-X Booster (both red palm oil) are both in solid form in their little blue jars until I rinse under hot water to melt it. I like it liquefied because it's easier for me to mix in with their food. This guy at the bird expo boasted about his methods and he was the only one to sell it that way. Just made me wonder if anyone else has seen red palm oil in a permanent liquid form like this? At this website http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/category/food-oils-natural-red-palm-oil.php , I found this info: But, I never found anything about what it means if it's in a solid form versus always liquid. Is there a loss in nutrition if it's liquid all the time? Any health concerns? For those that use red palm oil, is yours solid until heat applied? Or is it permanently in a liquid form? Is it preferred to buy it solid or liquid? Thanks in advance if anyone can shed some light on the difference between solid and always liquid red palm oil.
  5. All I could catch was one, but he usually does it several times when I talk to him. If he saw the camera phone, he gets more interested in that...anyhow, I know it was fast, but I am glad someone saw it. He is such a silly monkey!!
  6. It's right after I say "hey Rhett what's the monkey say". Then a quick head flick. :-)
  7. Okay, I apologize in advance for my annoying voice!! First you will see my Eclectus AppleJax and then Rhett. When I being my phone/camera near Rhett, he always stops what he is doing and looks. Anyhow, I ask him a question and he does ONE head flick in response. He's always done it. He doesn't have anything in his ear. It's always a response when I talk to him and he is busy preening or settling down, on one foot, yawning, etc. I got lucky and was able to record it. He is usually much more interested in what I am doing. So, have a look! It's pretty short. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nELdsnIEP8w
  8. Rhett sometimes tosses his head, like a quick "no" head flick. Sometimes he does it when I ask him something or just talking to him....usually when he is winding down and not being super chatty. Am I silly to think he is saying no? As though he doesn't want to be bothered? What do you guys think of the head toss? What does it mean? By the way, I posted before that he was chewing his feathers. After adding a foraging wheel and some new toys, he has tons of fresh shoots growing in - and no more feather chewing. :woohoo:<br><br>Post edited by: Dana, at: 2009/06/25 03:31
  9. I just LOVE this thread!! I am going to have my camera ready. These pics just make me smile. I love nothing more than seeing them chow down on food they like. Sometimes they are so quick to turn their beak up at a new dish we hope they'll tear into. Pics like these make slaving in the kitchen totally worth it :woohoo:
  10. Thanks for the warm welcome. Here are a couple pics from earlier today. You can see Rhett's fluff. And a couple of AppleJax having fun! He LOVES Elmo. In fact, he doesn't speak, he only mimicks Elmo that he learned from playing with his Elmo giggle toy. And shower time... Again, thanks for the warm welcome. I look forward to getting to know everyone & your monkeys!<br><br>Post edited by: Dana, at: 2009/04/27 05:20
  11. Thanks She & Judy! Ahhh a pic of the plucking....I should post a more recent one. He looks a little different now, I am sad to say. He has left his down feathers, so he looks like a fluffball mess. He nibbles on the feather in the middle until it falls off. I am glad he is not yanking. Just got new toys at the BirdExpo yesterday, so I hope that helps. He loves this acrylic wheel where you stuff treats & he has to dig them out by spinning the wheel until the slot allows him to extract a tasty treat. And lots of shredding stuff. The vet saw some new shoots growing, so hopefully he will allow his new "petals" to grow in fully.

    Oil Diffuser?

Thanks for clarifying, Dave. I was surprised when the lady said it was safe...she handed me info from this site: http://www.essentialbird.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14:-safe-use-of-therapeutic-grade-essential-oils-for-birds&Itemid=35 I thought it was a little strange, but she was someone selling a product & not a bird person boasting about it. I guess I am a little surprised why she'd show up at a bird show selling this thing. Hmmm.

    Oil Diffuser?

    Thanks everyone I just posted in the Welcome forum & added Rhett's messy beak to the thread you mentioned, Judy. I need to get a picture of AppleJax & his messy beak because he "grows" a bready-beard after I make them a fresh batch of bread. :laugh: I tried with brownies & some how burnt them last weekend. As I was wiping off the stove, I hit the knob bumping up the temp to 450, instead of the 325 it was supposed to be on. Had to throw that pyrex glass dish away. {Emotions-000200B8}
  14. Here's Rhett I have the full size on my external hard drive somewhere....it's just not accessible at the moment.
  15. My name is Dana & I have 2 monkeys. Rhett is my Congo African Grey and AppleJax is my Vos Eclectus. They are both 4 yrs old & I've had them since they were babies & helped hand feed them both. We recently moved to Chicago from Denver. Rhett, the Grey has started feather chewing a few weeks after moving here. Here are my two kids:

    Oil Diffuser?

Thanks for the replies I know he is chewing because of the move. But, now that we've moved here, I am not sure what else I can do. I took him to the vet yesterday for check up & CBC. His fecal sample came back great - all good signs & nothing derogatory. I am waiting on blood results just to rule out anything organ related. The diet is good, tons of toys with plenty of things to shred, cartoons on while I am gone....just noisy stompers upstairs, but I move moving into a single family home on June 1st, so that will be gone soon. We are in temp apt housing while I looked for a home with my fiance. The vet said it seemed behavioral. But, I'd never take a chance with something that a huge majority would not agree with. I had never heard of it so, I thought I'd ask you guys

    Oil Diffuser?

I was interested in this product because I was told it would be safe for birds....it smells good and I thought the Lavender would be soothing for my grey who has started chewing some feathers after I moved to Chicago in March 2009. I don't have any breathing issues, but I thought this would be nice to have - of course only if safe for birds. I thought it would be nice to have a nice smelling home, safe for birds, and de-stress my grey. So, would therapeutic grade oil diffuser be safe or not? I can't tell from your answer... This is what she was selling and said it was totally safe for birds. I know perfume is not, but what do you think about this? http://www.youngliving.us/pdfs/PIP_Ultrasonic_Diffuser.pdf

    Oil Diffuser?

Yesterday, I went to the TASC Midwest Bird expo in Wheaton, IL (DuPage County Fairgrounds) and a woman was there selling oils and the option to order a diffuser through here from Young Living. I didn't buy anything, but with it being a humidifier and therapy grade oils, is this beneficial? I am not looking for magical health cures, but the lavender smelled great & may have a de-stressing advantage. Plus, humidifier. I don't burn any candles of course, but I wonder if this is safe to use. Thanks! ~Dana
