Hi. I have a question about integrating two birds. I ave Mali who is a 6 year old CAG and Oscar who is the same age. I got them both about 6 months apart and they have been living with me and my family for about 5 1/2 years or so. They have been in separate cages positioned right next to each other the entire time. When they are out of the cages together they usually stay apart. When Mali is out he will climb on Oscars cage and they will interact with each other peacefully and friendly. I have never seen one act aggressively toward the other. So my question is: I was considering getting a corner cage and putting them both in the same cage. What are your thoughts on this? I appreciate all your input and suggestions. Thanks in advance. Rick

I have a 4 year old CAG. I have noticed lately that he sometimes he has a white powdery substance accumulated around the nostrils and on his upper beak. He doesn't seem like there is an issue. He is active, talking, eating, talking, flying, talking and happy. Can anyone suggest what this may be and if its normal. I have had him since a baby and this is new to me. Thanks.

About every three months they have a bird fair in Forrest Park. There are some good breeders who attend that. Also if you are willing to adopt check out feathered friends forever. They are in Grovetown near Augusta.

Here are some updated pics of Malaki -
Malaki talks alot and whistles and meows and coughs. He does not talk to us though. He mostly practices words and whistles when he is relaxed but if you let him think you are listening he clams up. It is pretty funny actually.

I have had Malaki for about 6 months now. He is a wonerful bird although he very mischevious and a huge tease. I live with my wife and four dogs which have all been in place since Malaki's first day in the home. Over the past six months or so my wife and I have spent equal time with Malaki and have really grown attacjed to him however Malaki had bonded with me more. Here is the problem. When I am home Malaki can be really nasty to my wife. If she tries to handle him in any way whether he is with me, on his cage, on his playstand or anything he will bite her and bite her hard. He usually gives the obvious signs but sometimes he will just be sitting there and she reaches over, tells him to step up and he strikes. If I am not home, at work for example, he is fime with he. Malaki will sit with my wife, be affectionate, preen and so on just like he will do with me. But as soon as I walk in the house he turns on her. The things I have read basically imply that avoidance is the best key to success here. If we know he is going to bite her when I am around then she should not handle him when I am around. I am hoping that this is not exactly the case and there is something I can do to improve the situation. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Malaki hated the shower when i first got him. I built a shower perch for him in the back of the shower and he gets the spray from my body. Now he loves it. He sings and flaps his wings and preens himself. It is awesome to watch. He does not like being in the direct stream of water though.

Malaki eats plenty of pellets but does not seem really interested in fruits and veggies. If I blend up veggies and meat and so on and feed him through a syringe he gobbles it up but if I just hand him a piece of fruit or veggie he won't eat it. He will take pellets by hand and eat them and also eat them on his own from his bowl. He is still young and I think he will grow into it. Yesterday he ate at the table with us and ate some rice and some chicken and other stuff so I think he is coming along.

judygram wrote: They were and from what I read it is important to get them outside for sunlight. His wings are clipped and he can not fly but am I missing something. Should he go outside or not. He is supervised while he is outside so he won't be attacked by any neighborhood cats or anything. I guess I should just bring him out in a cage. What kind of harness do you mean?

Post edited by: blln314, at: 2009/03/08 07:42

One question I did have was Malaki is a little bare on the chest feathers. He is not pulling them out becuase there are not any around. I was told that they are the last to grow in and not to worry. Should this be a concern or is that true?

luvparrots wrote: The adoption of the second hand grey fell through. No big deal though becuase I never met him so it was not a big disapointment. I got Malaki at a bird fair. I went to look and not intending to buy but there was a goog strong connection with him so I went for it. So far so good.

BaxtersMom wrote: Malaki is about 14 weeks or so I have been told. I have not had him sexed but his breeder said he had 3 clutch mates and two looked very simillar in size, color looks etc. One she kept and had it sexed and it was a female. So she thinks Malaki is probably a male. Not sure though. He had been wonderful so far. He is not completely weaned and I am still feeding him a blended diet once a day but he eats pellets good and he loves carrots. Thats about the only veggie he eats on his own though right now.

Hi everyone. I am new to the site and new to the bird world. I got Malaki here about a week ago and just wanted to introduce myself. I have been observing and reading information on this forum for a month or so in preperation of purchasing a bird. I am sure I will have 10,000 questions in the future so I am looking forward to hearing everyones responses. Thanks for being there to help people like me who are new to such a wonderful experience. I am very excited about Malaki being in our home and in our lives. See you all around the forum.

I would first like to say hello to everyone. I am new to the forum and also new to the bird world. I have never owned a parrot or any other bird but it is something I have always wanted to do. My life and life style has never allowed me to do so and therfore I have not but it is something I have always wanted to do. My fiance and I have decided together to take on this new and exciting adventure into the bird world and I have been doing alot of research on different species of parrots and what we would be looking for in a bird. I sort of decided on an Eclectus becuase of certain traits that are appealing to me however I have come across a unique oppurtunity recently. I have been presented with the oppurtunity to adopt a 7 year old African Grey. I have not yet met the family or the bird but have spoke with the owner. He said that he has had this grey since it was a baby and due to certain lifestyle changes he is unable to keep it. Here is my question(s: 1. Will this bird have a difficult time changing homes and leaving a family he has been with for seven years and if so is it something I could deal with or is it something a more experienced parrot owner should take on? 2. What should I look for when I meet the bird to see if I am taking on a parrot with serious behavioral issues and that is the reason they are trying to find another home? 3. What is the chance of the bird transitioning over to my home then later realizing that his previous owner is not comeing back then starting with behavioral problems? 4. Is this really something I should consider or just start fresh with my own bird? Any and all comments are appreciated and if there are any other things you think I should consider please let me know. Thanks for all the help.
